TUNNEL UNDER MONT BLANG,

PARIS, June 16,

In view of the developments in rallway. construction likely to ensue from the pier- cing of the Simplon, such as the connection of Brigg and Berne by means of a tunnel under the Lautschberg, a scheme said to be decided upon by the Swiss Government. M. Gauthier, French Minister of Public Works, has hail for some time under his Consideration various projects for improving the railway coinmunicati n with Switzer- land and Italy, in order that France may bs in a position to keep her share of the increasing trans-Continental träffle.

A proposal made by the Paris, Lyons, and Mediterranean Company to improve

their Dijon, Pontarlier, and Lauanuine lino by constructing a branch from Frasne under Meni d'Or to Vallorbe isot viewed with favour by M. Gauthier an 'being a costly patching up.of an unuatisfactory route, the line being often blocked with snow in winter. The Minister, as the result of a long study of the question, in which he~ has been naslated by the host professional- advice, has prepared a scheme which, if accomplished in its entirely, will eclipse in 1376 magnitudo even the great engineering feats already, achieved by French brains and money.

SWEET WALNUTS,

The project may be divided into two separate schemes, the first of which is like- ly to be put into execution at an early date. This consists of the construction of a line from Lon-le-Saulnier, where the railways from Dijon terminates, under the Col de la Faucille to Geneva. It is said that the construction of this line is not only practi cable but easy. It would cost four million aix hundred thousand pounds, and coul bo completed in five years.

The second portion of M. Gauthier's pr ject is much more daring. It includes no loss a feat than the tunnelling of Mont Blanc it self in order to connect through Genova

rest and Company at Wivonhoo, the River Colne, and under conditions of greatest scorecy, there has just been com. pleted a new type of submarine, for which important claims are made-by-the-inventors-

Tho boat, which carries two torpedo tubes, will havo à, crew of three.. It is so small that it can be easily raised from he

water on board the deck of a battleship, or put on a railway truck and conveyed from one port to another,

The following are the principal dimen- Bion-Length; 34 ft.; diametër, Oft._din_L displacement, when fully submerged, 17

tons.

Electricity is the sole motive power, the usa of petrol being entirely discarded, and the bout, when submerged, will have a spoed of eight miles an hour. It is claimed that, as the submarine will ordinarily be carried on board a battleship or cruiser, where it will be ready for instant consign" ment to the water, the fact that," being" electrically-driven, it will have a smaller indiathan a potrol boat is no disadvantage.

Yesterday the submerging trials were successfully gone through, but before the DOUBLY

tiny craft was allowed to enter the water certain difficulties had to oe surmounted.

The submarine has been built in a shed, the doors of which were kopt locked night and day, and only those actually engaged in the work were allowed near. But as the miniature vessel approached completion cortain Government officialı took an ingreau- ing interest in what was going on, and kept vigilant watch on the yard,

When at length the submarine was ready- to be moved from the dock into the river,

n customs House officer, representing the Foreign Office, placed himself on the narrow platform, and resolutely refused to move until he received a written assurance from

the builders that the vessel would not fear the country without due notice being given

to the authorities.

The boat has been built to the order of a British syndicate.

A-Snake 'Story.

Mr Alfred Mack, who is in charge of

an ale.down South, has reported a some-- what surprising incident which occurred a fow days ago (says the Times of Ocylon). While out with his dogs to came across a buge amako, which auddenly pounced on the dog, squeezing it in its folda. Mr Mack, with great presence of mind, grabbed the snake by its head, and stred on its tall, with the object of saving his dog. He tried hard to dislodge the snake, but it proved too powerful. Mr Mack then shouted to his coolio to bring him his revolver, with which he put a bullet through the head of the snake. The animal measured 10ft. 4in. from head to tail. Mr Mack has secured the skin intact, and also collected the grease to be got from the animal's body, which is much prized medically by villagers, as possessing great healing power when up- plied to deep-cut wounds,

A HOSPITAL Superintendent says that n healthy baby should cry three or four tin es a day least, and from 10 to 15 minutes at a trife.

COOKING is becoming aobligatory subject in American schools, says Miss Ravenhill, in a special report issued by the English Board of Education.

M

TWO SISTERS SAVED

BY MOTHER SEIOIL'S SYRUP, FROM THE MISERIES OF INDIGESTION AND PERHAPS FROM DEATH.

When Mrs. Kalie Marais, who resides at No. 4, Strand Street, West Bank, East London, C. C., declares that the lives of both bersolf and, her sister were saved by the use of Mother Sigel's Syrup, the assertion becomes important to the whole community in which Mrs. Marais lives. She had been for four miserable years greatly afflicted with complicated stomach troubles, ordinarily called indigestion. When she had grown tired of enduring her miseries, and almost beyond the hope of ever securing relief from them, her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth' -Bouwer, of No. 40, Smith Street, West Bank, East London, advised her to try Mother Seigel's Syrup. Her sister had already used it, and knew of its wonderful curativo power. So Mr. Marais began using it, with what good resulti she tells you in the lotter which follows, and which was dated January 4, 1005 :--

U

"For four years," she says, "I suffered from biliousness, constipation, and pains acros. the chest, which I am informed is one of the symptoms of indigestion. I did not know what it was to feel well during those long years; I was almost afraid to eat anything, as I know it would make me vomit and retch afterwards.

"I would lay down to rest, but there was little or no-rest for me during the whole period of my illness; I would always wake up after a restless hour or two's sleep and wish for morning to arrive. No medicine seemed able to help me in the least. My bowels also gave me a deal of trouble; for days at a time I would be constipated, and such severe headaches would follow.

MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.

972

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports.

All

the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days

"It was through my sister I heard of your Mother Saigel's Syrup, and I may say sho voices my sentiment with reference to its good -qualities. It saved her life, and I can honestly say that bad I not taken it in time I would not be here to-day to record these facts of my cure.

After using four bottles I was put on the right road to regain my former good health, and all these unpleasant symptoms are now of the past, the result being due only to the curative powers of Mother Seigel's Syrap. I have recommended it. to several of my friends," Mrs. Elizabeth Bouwer wrote as follows on January 5, 1905, from her home in Smith Street, West Bank My life was despaired of some little time back. I had been very ill with yellow Jaundice and became so weak that I had to be fed through a tube. The doctors did their best for me, but I became worse and worse, and all hopes of saving my life were given up, A friend who saw my condition thought it was my weak stomach" (which could not retain food) that caused my trouble, and that something should be need first to strongthen my stomach, My friend's reasoning, saved my life;. for Mother Seigel's Syrup was given i smalt qualities from time to time during the day, and very soon I commenced to feel very hungry and also that I had new life giten me. I am trong, healthy-looking person to-day, and deeply indebted to Mother Seigel for curing
