OLD SILVER SALE
Crystal Biberon Sold For 15,00 Guineas.
The frequentera of Messrs Christie's ́sale- room have been so satiated with high prices during the past fortnight that they seem no longer capable of feeling surprise, and it was remarkable that the phenomenal bidding of May 24 raised but the mildest excitement. That high figures would be reached during the afternoon was generally expected, for since the celebrated Dunn-Gardner sale of 1902 there has been no disperast of old silver BO important us that of yesterday, when to the late Mr Louis Huth's fine collection of carly English silver were added some choice piecos bolonging to other collectors,
Among the last was a rare old. Biberon, the property of Mr John Gabbit- as, and this piece provided the sensation of the day. According to the catalogue, it was stated to be Italian work, dating-from about the middle of the
he 18th Century, but exports, while confirming the date of origin, have decided that the Biberon is of German origin, and the correction accord- ingly was made before the lot was put up 1376 to auction. Though richly ornamented

It stands 12fin, high, and is 16in. long. Its general appearance resembles that of a monstrous winged tortoise, whose head forms the spout of the vessel. So, little obvious was its intrinsic value that on many faces was soon an amused smile when 'the auction or asked for an opening bid of £5.03, and more than one dealer deemed his inquiry facetious."
That the question was put in all serious- ness, however, soon became evident, for though the opening bid was a modest five hundred, the sum quickly mounted to 2500
guincas. At this figuro there was a long pause, but just as the hammer was about to descend came a bid of 10,000 guingas, and the dual recommenced between Mr Duveen, and Mr Charles Wertheimer—or rather bis representative, for Mr Wertheimer was not present in person. Without any further signs of hesitation on either sido, this figure

knocked down to Mr Charles Wertheimer. A faint round of applause greeted the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, but though. a new and surprising record had been. made for old rock crystal biberons, the excitement in the sale-room near equalled that occasioned last week by the hawthorne ginger jar, which fetched little over a third of the price.
One of the most interesting items among the Huth silver was a largo plain tankard and cover, dated 1892, and weighing over
13 ounces, presented by Queen Mary to Simon Janszen for having safely conveyed. King William III. to The Hague in 1691. The cover, which is surmounted by a finely- chased figure of a lion, boars the following. inscription :-
"De Honingen die heerlyk blinkt,
Won Simon Janazon als by drinkt,
Het zulk een vat gedagtlo weren,
Waar in haar milldheljustaat telezen,”
Which is thus rendered into English in the catalogue :-))
(When Simon fills this cup with wine:
Her Majesty's brilliancy fu it cloth shine,
And as he the cup to his lips doth lift, Does bear remembrance of the Itoyal gift.) At the Dunn-Gardner sale, a William and Mary vaso and over of the samo year fetched £108; but a greater sum Was expected for the Huth tankard, which, in addition to its intrinsic charm and rari y has so interesting a historical association, Events proved that the expectation was amply justified, for the tankard was even- tually knocked down at 2050 guinens to Mr Philip Crichton, of Messra Crichton Bros, the well-known Bond-street silver- smiths.
Another William and Mary large stand- ing cup and cover, of the same year, 1270 weighing aver 87 ounces, was bought by

ORATOR'S TRICKS.
Public speakers of all kinds have many little tricks for managing and 'holding an audienco (say the writer of an article on- titled Tricks Adopted by Platform Spoak- ora' in Cussell's Saturday Journal for June), More than one successful orator now sp peating before the public has his favourite platform pose, a way of standing that he knows presents him in picturesque alde to his audience, Several speakers take with them wherever they go special small tables, made to exnet beight, that just suit them to loan upon when speaking.. Inad- vertently left behind, the speaking table of one noble Lord was last year sent on by ' special train. There is a lady speaker, a champion of the poor, who has a special .' platform cough.' If proceedings seein be- coming dull, and people listen 1stlessly, the lady, at the finish of a phrase, fires off, as a kind of aside, her special cough. A reporter has said: "It is not a comic cough, but it is a cough in some way so unlike the lady herself that it always concentrates thought upon her. In addressing working- men, evidenco of acquaintance with trade torms often is valuable. Appealing to an audience of leather-workers, a speaker pro voked ringing cheers when he referred As basil, to a kind of leather known for he pronounced he word 'bazelo,' as the

Cheers greeted the hit, for 'fly' meant here not merely be routed, but, technically, the cracking of a glass vessel by the expansion of an air bubble within it. Looking back over my reported speeches, says an old hand at electioneering, I find that perhaps most of the "loud cheers" and "much laughter" provoked were the result of either local allusions or impromptu remarks that I had introduced into my speech on the spur of the moment. The best "stock gag" you can find will not cause the enthusiasm which, say, a bit of repartce to a ques- tioner will call forth. Amongst other tricke, the pre-arranged interruption is hot unknown. At an im- portant mooting, a prominent lawyer and politician-gonial in private life, impressive us a public speaker-was heckled by a small man seated near the front row. Drawing himself to his full height, the orator said slowly, in tones of withering scorn. 'How can you, a respectable British working man

The harbours bad silled up, they were choked, and in some instances the sea had stealthily retreated. Look at Sand. wich, look at Romney, look

SUFFERING WOMEN.
MANY so called women's complaints ver
English ports,') is now a mile and a halfdition from the sea. Where the tide dowed in at Romney there is now a wide tract of marsh. Hytho has had to gg forwards, to build a little avasido in front of the old town.” which lies back very nearly two miles. Consider then the case of Hastings. Hast ings I., the original town, is under the sea; tho presont charming town is quite a modern affair, springing out of a fishing village. This was the first of the ports to be affected by what is called the Eastward Drift. Storms of long ago, the want of sea cm- bankments-and the first Hastings, was subraerged. The shingle boach which wrought the change now forms the foun- dation of parades and torraces. Not ono of the Cinque Ports escaped the operation. of this curious law of Eastward Drift. The case of Romney Marsh is a little different. First we have the process of 'inning' the marsh district-that is to say, damming out the tides by embankment. But in pro- portion as you do this, reclaiming marali land and lessening the area covered by the tide, so more and more marsh offers itself for reclamation, and the port by which the tide enter becomes, for want of the former large volume of the scouring element, more and more choked up.' Dover might seem to be an exception to the working of the
law, but it is not so in reality. To say nothing of an enormous expenditure of public fonds, it has taxed tho never-ending labour of sixty generations to keep the harbour open. Let the labour cease, and Dover Harbour would vo y soon be choked.
AUSTRALIAN PRIVATE
WEALTH.
One of the most conclusive tests of the | progress and prosperity of a country is the amount of its private wealth in proportion to the population, and the manner in which it is distributed. In these respects the Commonweath
compares favourably with many older lands. Although little more than a century has elapsed since the British flag was hoisted on Australian shores, the still youthful community is richer, both individually and collectively,
than can be said of not a few more TOTAL FUNDS 47 3167 DECEMBER, 1904, densely populated countries. The accu- mulation of private wealth has steadily progressed since the earliest days of settlo- £687,500 0 0ment, until in 1903 it reached the amount II-Fire Funds 3,001,286 12 9 of £081,979,000, in the form of land, III-Life & Annuity Funds 13,472,532 7 0

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis" of observations taken by means of an ac- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Telm Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
Tho zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 8. feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
