WASTED WAR STOR18,
Remarkable Figurës,
A return was issued on May 18 of stores sud supplies despatched to South Africa during the war and destroyed locally,
About 900 tons of preserved meat were thus wasted, two million and a half of meat and vegetable rations, to say nothing of 138 000lbs of ham, 30,0-0lbs, of Ingon, |G80,000lbs. of cats, and upwards of three- quarters of a million of emorgency catione. These were all destroyed, either ow tho
length of time they had been in the country or from want of storage acoom- modation, or. climatic influence, "deterioration.'
Bosides this, more than seven million rounds of small-arme ammunition were con- demned and broken up on return to this country, having been rendered unservico- able through the conditions of Bervice.
Except in a certain number of cases where the origin of the supplies is described as 'not known,' the names of the contractors ara appended. Most of them have already been mentioned in the House of Comment, 1378 and there is nothing in the return to show that negligence can be imputed to any of these contractors, whose names are given. Only in the case of the 680,000lbs. of oats is the | romark mado 'that the loss was partly due to the inadvertent insertion of wet bags in the centre of the stock,' and this is one of the items which came from an

Ironworks in Japan.
The Japanese Government's ironworks erected at Wakamatsu is to have an exten- sive blast furnace plant with all the neces sary appliances. besides plants for Bea semer steel and Siemens Martin stoels. The works are, however, far from being complete. In 1903 it turned out some 35,000 tons of finished product. The
work uses col obtained from threa mines, worked in connection with the lant and situated twenty miles distant. Ores from different parts of the country are used, and a considerable quantity is brought from Coren and China, especially the latter. The present cost of pro ducing a ton of cast-iron is stated to Le about £5, and it is expected to reduce this price by eliminating the Chineso ore, which has a high price, and possibly a ton of iron will soon be produced for about £2 15. This will be about 104, lower than foreign cast-iron, which is obliged to pay a customs duty of S8. 4d. per ton. However, experts say that the difference in price. between the home and foreign products in too small to allow the Japanese product to support the heavy charges coming from the first coat of the plant. These charges were not counted in the above price. The ex- and pense of installing the plant has been
£3,000,000.

THE SCARCI (Y OF RADIUM. THE
The price of radium has increased so much recently, owing to the difficulty of obtaining further supplies, that research work is almost at a standstill. Sir William Ramsay told one of our representatives | that as much as £20 ̊a milligramme, or at the rate of £300,000 an ounce, was being | demanded, and the quantity available, even at that prico, le very small indeed.
What could be got for £ some time ago, when radium was less known than it is,' said ono,of the principals of Messrs Armbrecht, Nelson, and Co., at the Duke. street pharmacy, where most of the radiumi that has come to this country" has been stored, is now belug sold for £100, and the price is steadily growing up. Strong radium is being manufacted by only one man that I know of, a German named Giesel, and the quantity available is exceed. ingly small. I don't believe that there has beon" more than half an ounce of radium manufactured since Mme. Curio discover. ed the now element, Two mines in Corn. wall were believed to have radio-active pitchḥlendo, and a British company was formed to exploit it, but the venture was abandoned. Other'eflects are being made in America to increase the supply, So far, however, they have been unsuccessful.'
Another attompt, we understand, is to be made to get radium from the Cornish mines. This timo a German is to try the experiment, Standard.
