London finds the ready response.

Persons addicted to los do not always drink it cases occur in which the babitué cats it. In-one case of this kind, the victim, a woman who ate quantifies of ten, actually developed delirium tremens. This, though an exceptional occurrence, shows the power of the drug over the nervous system, and, of course, it is just for its stimulating power that tea is taken. Having been a doctor for thirty years, I can pretty definitely answer this

The healthy person, who liber Query in can eat a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner- only injures his digestion by taking a thing to eat between, If ho drink of water won't hurt him; but almost any other drink will, and particularly-tes. In the meal called afternoon tea it is not the entables that are the essential feature, but the beverage the stimulating ten. «

Many people do not understand how it is they have such an appetite for tes when they have little or no care for any other meal-if we except the morning cup of tea brought up to the bedroom, without which

they would never get up at all. The rea

And what is the effect of it? The effect is an increased wear-and-tear on the nervous system. Tea belongs to a group of nerve stimulants, of which erythroxylon coca (the source of cocaine), coffee and cocoa are also members, which enable a person to get more out of himself in the shape of mental or bodily energy than he would be able to got without them. This is drawing a bill on the bank of his nervous. system, of course, and the hill will have to be met. RAILWAYS IN SOUTH AFRICA THE OWL, GRILL & OYSTER

A Record of Economy, -JOBANNESBURG, # April.-One of the most encouraging of recent events in South African administration is the issue by the Government of the balance-sheet of the Cantral South African Railways,

Economies have been effected by the- Railway Administration with an unsparing haud, and as they have been achieved with- out any sacrjuce of efficiency, they must he reckoned as all to the good, notwithstand- ing that they liave resulted in the inevitable, cases of individual hardship where super. Augus oficials have had to be discharged. The result, comparing the half-year ended December last with the corresponding halt of 1903, is seen in its most striking form en the reduction of the ratio which working expenses bear to earnings. This ratio was 70.8 per cent, in the second half of 1903; In the second half of 1904 it was reduced to 58.7 por cont.

1

This reduction in expouses becomes even more notable when it is remembered that it was brought about in a period of substanti- -ally reduced earnings, the gross revenue.in the second half of 1904 hoing £160,000 less than in the corresponding period of 1903. Nor have we come to the end of our scono. mies. More are contemplated, and it will be seen, therefore, that when they come into operation and traffic-incréasou as well, the working expenses of the Central South' African Railways will be go low as to excito envy in other railway managenients all over the world. Even already, that is to say in the second-half of last year, the surplus of

MILLIONAIRE AND ARTIST'S MODEL,

NEW YORK, April 12, The wedding of Mr Harry Thaw, brother of the Countess of Yarmouth, with Miss Nesbit took place at Pittsburg yesterday.

This wedding is the culmination of a three years' romanco which has been the

talk of two continents, and it finally N. LAZARUS,

disproves the story that the pair were When married in London last autumn, Miss Nasbit returned to the States from London she then passionately declared tha Harry Thaw always stayed at the Caritou, and she had stayed at Claridge's. The opposition of the bridegroom's other, whose, busbaud was at one time Mayor of New York, and left her oight IF millions sterling, was overcome: Sho not. ly agreed to allow her son £20,000 a year, but was present at her son's wedding in the parlour of a Pittsburg Presbyterian Parsonage, where she saw the bride for the

irst time in her life.

Miss Nesbit is not yet 20, and a few years- ago was a poor little bare-footed Allegheny girl. She was married in a light three-quarter opera cloak, with rare lace and orna. mented with Parisian floral designs. They sail for Europe on Saturday.

The bride is without exception the most photographed person in the United States. When fifteen she was an artist's model, and

sat for Charles Danis Gibgcu's most famous drawing called "The Eternal Question. In this picture her flowing hair is trained so as to form an interrogation point. She went on the stage, and appeared in Flor- dora," not as one of the celebrated sexter, but as a simple flower girl. George Lederer, the theatrical manager, imagined he saw in her another Edna May, but Harry Thaw, who bombarded her with pianos and costly: jewels, which were all returned, ultimately proved a successful rival in managing her Sho, forsook the theatre and went on a European tour with her thother. Thaw ollowed, and the mother suddenly returned to America to marry a broker named Hol man, who gave the bride away posterday. Mr Thaw and his lady love crossed last November. Upon their arrival they stayed at the Hotel Cumberland. The manager of the hotel, in view of the stories from Fondo, asked them to leave the hotel, as Thaw declined to call ber his

wife..

Miss Nesbit was offered a fortune to leave. her lover alone, while Thaw was threatened liat he would be cut off with the proverbial Family dollar. Both were equally obdurate, and now they have their reward.

Thaw is the gay young spark who throw years ago gave a banquet at Paris to twenty Desatios of European reputation. The dinner was supposed to have cost 260.000. When his sister married the Earl of Yar

outh he was on the programma to give the bride away, but he failed to appear.

QUALITY

GREAT AGE.

Per Dozen

About a fortnight ago we deemed it our dutyto call attention to the dilapidated, not to say disgraceful, condition of most of the rickshas which ply for hire in the colony of Hongkong, and pointed out that, com- pared with the excellent vehicles which are in use In Macao, or even those licensed in Shanghai, they are disreputable. We notice with pleasure that during the last week a vigorous activity is at work, which promises to mend matters, if not to remove altogether this disgraceful state of things. Painting up the old rattlebono rick- shas, however, is all very well in its way, but what we would like to see is a new type of vehicle introduced. In Saigon, Haiphong, and Hanoi, nothing but rubber, tyred rickshas are in use. Why not hore Wo understand that a gentleman is in town at present endeavouring to arrange for the introduction of such vehicles, and it is to be hoped that he will succeed in his mis. sion, The Government could easily assist in the transformation by gradually con- demning those now in use and insisting on a better type. Many ought to be con- demned without consideration.
