A STRANGE EXPERIENCE. THE OWL, GRILL & OYSTER

ROOM

New York, March 27-A curious night was observed in the East river this after-

woon. Une man after another was seen to OKING done by a European Cook, ALL KINDS of LIQUOR sorved with

Meile, Special Rates to Monthly Boarders,

come up to the surface, until four in all bad

risen twenty

feet about the level of the water, on the apex of a species of inverted whirlpool. The occurrence in thus explain. ed by one of thom.

I was inspecting the subway tunnel to Brooklyn when I noticed a sharp draught upward, and saw a fissure that was only just visible. Running to a pile of bags of saw dust and hay, which are kept handy for just such emergencies, I climbed up a ladder, and attempted to plaster the bags against the rapidly wipening aperture; but the air

had begun to rush throught the opening

with such force that I was pinned to the top of the tunnel by its pressure. In another instant I was shot upward. As the earth gave way, a big hole was scooped out right in front of my face almost. Then I was going up through seven or eight feet of mud and rock. I was perfectly conscious all the time, and remember clawing with my hands in front of my face trying to keep the rocks away. Then I hit the water. I guess there was twenty-five foot of it. shot up through that fast enough, and wont up fully twenty feet in the air. When I fell back I began swimming around and shouting. I didn't even lose my hat. We expect risks, but his was the funniest thing I ever heard of,"

GERMAN COLLIERS AT

PONDICHERRY.

A Torpedo Boat Scare.

I

Pondicherry, March 26-Great excite- ment has been caused here by the arrival mour roads from Cardiff of two German colliers. Five more are expected. It is surmised that they are for the Russian -fleet, which, it is said, is likely to call here, if it is not stopped on its way out by the Japanese Fleet! Some of the latter have passed Singapore, and a Japanese torpedo. bost is reported at Colombo. The Baltic Squadron being in the "Indian Ocean, it may happen that there will be a naval engagement on the Coromandel Coast!

The colliers reported that they ran short of coal and intended taking in a supply at Colombo, but finding a Japanese topedo- boat there, came to Pondicherry, They are bound for the Far East,

This stirring little legend says the Ceylon -Observer emanates from Pondicherry where -two German colliers recently in Colombo Harbour with coal for the Baltic Fleet, have now arrived. Apparently the nervous excitement of the North Son Commission is infectious, and the torpedo-boat alleged. to have been seen here is probably a coal bargo, a harbour dredger or a Maldive buggalow. Any of the lot might as easily be taken for a torpedo-boat as a Hull trawler. It is fortunate they did not observe the "Samson" and "Goliath" Gr wo might have had the presence of the entire Japanese floot reported!

is by testimony, like that given below that Bila Beans have gained auch world wide fame as the great modern medicine. Biliousness that was pronounced by a medical man as incurable, and which defied all manner of drugs and pills, sub- mitted absolutely when opposed by Bile Beans. The subject of the cure is Mrs Davidson, wife of a farmer living at Den- head Farm, near Dundee, Scotland. She says For twenty years peace and rest were denied me in consequence of acute biliousness. Night after night I had to sit up in bed racked with pain. My head often felt like splitting, and the pains across my back. shoulders, and stomach, were almost unbearable I held cold, damp cloths to my head to case the pain, and I tried to bring up the file from my stemach by making fäysalf sick, but it was all to no purpose.” Day and might I suffer- red alike.

Twould be going about dong my work, milking the cows, and dong other farm work, when suddenly a mist would rise before my eyes and almost blind me, I was, also subject to dizziness, and often when I crossed the Farmyard I would turn dizzy md so faint with pain that I have had to walk about almost doubled into, A doctor told me that the biliousness was of too long standing to be cured. I tried patent medicines, but they were no good. Then one of my sons heard of Bile Beans. I tried & bottle and after a few doses I got a night's undisturbed sleep the first for twenty years! As I took the Beans I got better and better, and I am glad to say I am now quite cured. I have no pain whatever, and am in better condition than I have been for twenty years, Life has sgain become pleasurable. I owe my pre- sent health solely to Bile Beans, and I cannot speak too highly of them,

Bile Beans are an absolate specific for indigestion, billousness, liver and kidney disorders, pains in the side, loins, and back, constipation, piles, dizziness, sleeplessness, nervousness, angemia, and all female sil- menta They are obtainable from all- chemists and medicine vendors. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an qu tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level, "

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria. Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 fact 6 inches to the height given in the table.

Add 28 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
