LATdow March 21,
Ar dry from the Clyde to the Island of fragrant atrosma where more favourable climatic conditiona pravail for river trips than obtain in this northern latitude at the present season of the year". but though an outing on the Clyde River ám its present polluted condition may not be enticing, yet from its position na a com- mercial channel-bearing forth huge ships to the open 838, laden with valuable cargoes to distant lands-and as a ' centre
of engineering and shipbuilding, such an excursion is full of interest.
On boarding one of the river steamers at the Bromislaw one is soon passing through a large fleet of coasting and cross-channel steamers, then between two wellknown linars engaged in the North Atlantio service. The Allan Line steamers aro berthed at the south bank of the river, while immedi- ately opposite are the vessble of the Anchor Line. The latest addition to the former line is the new turbine steamer Victor ian, ** 10,630 tons gross, which went through Aamocomful trial oruise recently. She is the first turbine steamer to cross the Atlantic. The Anchor Ling's latest: vopsel is the twin screw steamer "Caledonia,“ 9,400 tons gross, which was launched in October last from the yard of Messrs D. and W. Henderson, Partick. The **Cale. donia" is the largest steamer that has ever traversed the upper reschen of the river

They included in their output ships of all sizes, from the largest battleship afloat down to the smallest pinnaco, from the lar gest ocean 'greyhound' to the smallest coasting steamer or the shallow stern whee- ler for Eastern rivers, and from the largest team yacht to the smallest sailing-racer-in fact, every conceivable shape of craft suit- able for all waters and every climate, for business or pleasure,

Caso
Etiquette is, when you come to analyse it, quite as much a science as etymol gy;" cthnology, ethics, and all the other "ets" and etceteras, and it is a source of antisfac- tion to know that it is studied far more scientifically and decorously in the Far East by those who ought to know how to do it than it is in the homelands. Why this should be, of course, it is not for me to say: but it is av, and of that there is no possible doubt, no possible doubt whatever, no possible, probable shadow of doubt, no

A lady called upon an- days ago. ⚫ther lady,
but the latter was out. The usual dainty piece of paste-board was placed upon the tray, and the fair visitor proceeded to the next place of call where the hostess and several other ladies were taking ten and discussing Kobe and Koboites. In course of conversation the new-comer mentioned that she had called upon Mra So-and-So, but that lady was not at home, Not at home!' said one of the party, Why, I was there less than half- an-hour ago. So was 1,' rejoined another. "It is Mrs So-and-So's day, you know.' Then it suddenly dawned upon the visitor, as it were, that she had called at the wrong house. "She explained the house and told the number on the gate, whereupon there was a general chorus. Oh, my dear, how afid. Why, that's Mrs. What's Her Name's house. She's not in cur set, The caller's face flushed crimson, not with sor- row, but in anger, to think that she should have left her card at the house of Mrs What's Her Name. Next day, after a sleepless night, she called again at the house of Mrs What's Her Name and demizded of the affrighted atnah the return of ber vi. siting card. The maid explained that sho did not know where the card was, but that she would ask her mistress, who was out, for. the pasteboard immediately on her re- turn. I don't know what the caller didn't threaten to do if Mrs What's Her Name
dared to retain the card. Any how, next day the caller a brief note from Mr What's Her Name, saying that his wife had burn. ed the visiting card, otherwise she would have been delighted to return it. And so it all onded in smoke. And that, my
friends, is Etiquette.

This is the statement of a veteran soldier of the British army, who was born in the West Indies, served in the Ashanti war and is still in the service," being employed by the Army Service Corps in the Military Stores at Port Elizabeth. In all easqa, on both sides of the world, he turn- ed for actual help, för relief, to Mother Seigel's Syrup chiefly because his own mother had used it successfully with him and others of her children.

I cannot recollect the exact date of attack of indigestion, but anyway I was a Quar ter Master Sergeant of the 1st British West India Regiment at the time and stationed at
Kingston. I used to feel out of sorts; I always feit as though I had eaten too much, even though, in fact, it would be the smallest morsel. I had a blown-out, puffed-up, sensation after each meal, and I can assure you I felt miserable. Remembering that my parents had used Mother Seigel's Syrup for the younger membera of our family and as they pinned their faith to Mother Seigel's curative powers, I considered I would not go far wrong by giving it a trial my- saif. I had suffered for three years and was

623 to Hongkong she had orented quite a furore; her bravery, patience, and sympathy during the trying time at Peking Was the subject of conversation slike in the club and in the drawing-room, and Major Hooker had mildly hinted to Horace one day at the club that he was a fool to have let such a treasure slip through kie fingers, Captain Turner had been watch- ing for this opportunity all the evening.

She gave him her soft, cool hand. The man took it in both his, longing to say some word of comfort, but not knowing how.
*Should you want a friend any time, or anywhere, Miss Armstrong, you have but to command me, and bowing low, ha ylelded to a sudden impulse, kissed her hand, and left her hurriedly.
Little did alther friend think under what circumstances they would meet again. Myrtle's note released Captain Turner from his difficulty and he went off to Can- ton to relieve his feeling shooting.
re his fouling by a few day The scandal was a nine day's wonder. Lady Huntsford and Myrtle departed for Peking, Hongkong gossips grew tired of discussing the scandal, and all thoughts were filled with graver matters in the threatened war with China.
Anxiously did all look for letters from the Legation, and when at laat the news burst with horror upon the gaiety-loving little colony that Peking was doomed, sur- rounded by the Boxers, and that none of the inhabitants could possibly escape, the dread and anxiety of Lady Marsh know no bounds. Not only wore many dear friends shut up there. but her only boy was A.D.C to Sir George Plunkett, and for all she know dead already! Thus she waited in anxious sorrow, day after, day, week“ after week, for news from the beleaguered city.
Captain Talbot rushed in one morning to say that at last, as a marine, he was to have a lucky chance. The ships had been ordered up north, and he might have an opportunity at last to serve his country and prove his friendship for Lady Marsh and Miss Armstrong at the same time,
asid, ere they had taken two steps in the valse. And she had come, feeling sure that her moment of triumph was at hand.
Myrtle, he stammered out at last, I wish I had not been so basty that e evening. Will you forgive me? Will you be my wife, and let bygones be bygonee?' and he tried to take the hand that had once been his by right, but which he had rejected.
She drow it from him, and said coldly 2— I regret that I am unable to listen to you, Captain Turner. I have been engaged to Captain Talbot for six months, and ex- pect to be married in a few weeks time,
