NOTES.

NEW YORK, March 18, That banks Hoan hundreds of thousands of dollars to customers with out any other recurity than the good credit of the broker desiring the loan was the statement made to-day by Mr Henry R. Carse, assistant cashier of the Hanover National Bank. In answer to questions belore a referee in the bank ruptcy proceedings of Jacob Berry & Co., Mr Caras said the firm had a commercial Account with the Hanover National Bank, and the bank made the firm loans from time to time.

Those loans, the witness said, were se- cured by promissory collateral notes. He Baid that the security was the good name of the firm dealing with the bank. Jacob Berry & Co., the witness said, had been in business for forty years, and the firm stood very high. The pass book was put in as evidence, and Counsel read extracts from it showing that in fift on days 'th October loans of $100,000 were made by the Bank There were four other to Berry & Co. loans to the company during the samo month of $50,000, $15,000, $45,000, and $45,000 respectively.

In view of the international situation. that has prevailed since-Italy-entered the Triple Alliance in 1882, she has entirely neglected her fortifications on the eastern frontier, centring all her efforts on fortifying the western frontier, as Italy's relations with France then were so strained that ander Premier Crispi conflict seemed

imminent.

Since 1889, however, the most friendly relations have been re-established with France, and the opinion now prevails hero that all the Italian frontiers should be equally protected. not for aggressive pur- poses, but so that Italy may be ready for all possible occurrences.

Consequently the proper authorities have beon studying the best method of ensuring the safely to the peninsula along the eastern Alps, which are strategically Italy's weakest point, as Austrian territory so projects into

ANOTHER TRIBUTE TO BILE BEANS.

value of Bile Beans as is every day testified to by ersons all over the civilised world who have found in this medicine health-giving preper remedies. From the standpoint of economy Bile Beans can claim first place, as their price brings them within the reach of all, and a course of Bile Beans is far cheaper than a course of doctor's medicine. Read what Mr Wm. Maskrey of Hawthorne Cottage, Betley, Crewe, England, says of them;

Some time back my liver became out of order, and I experienced the greatest diffi culty in breathing. My food turned to gas, causing me pain between the shoulders and in the thest. I had also pain in the left side. a dull, tired feeling even when fawakened in a morning. The bile was not properly secreted, and almost every day I had a bad bilious attack, accompanied by headache. My strength abbed away and I came to be in a shocking plight. On doctors I spent a small fortune, but it was of no avail, and at last I began to despair of ever being well again. I had nearly given up all hope of ever getting better, when I made up my mind to try Bile Beane. After taking them for a short time I experienced a wonderful change. I felt a better man altogether. As I persevered with their use the pains. across my chest and under my left shoulder

radually began to disappear, I ceased to bilious, and my sleeplessness left me. In the mornings I awa greatly re freshed and able to leave for my work as cheerful as anybody could wish. Bile

Beans have now completely cured me, my liver has been put in good order, and I can once more sit down to my meals with

pleasure, without fear of pain afterwards,

and without fear of biliousness,

I feel I am a brute-but you deceived me, and you must give me time- to get over it, saying which he strode- away to visit Lady Marsh in the drawing
