Sir Edward Blount died at Grinstead on Wednesday at the age ninety-six. He was himself of French descent being a scion of Le Blounds, Counts of Grines in Picardy, and spent seventy years of strenuous life in that country, as diplomatic Attaché and Railway Director. Of the meets ing he told an amusing story in his The delayed wedding of the German memoirs, published in 1901. Queen Crown Prince will take place in June. supporters than the submarino.
Franco has över been to the fore, with experiments in submarine and submersible oraft and the latest have demonstrated the unquestionable superiority of the submer- sible torpedobost over the anbmarine. The result, should subsequent examinations prove it to be reliable, will have a marked effect on the naval programmes of the Powers.
-At the present time France has 23 subma- rines, and 3 submersibles and has 11 subma
rines and 10 submersibles under construc-
tion, while in England the submarine, according to A. H. Burgoyno in The Naval Pocket Book, has so steadily advanced that by the end of the present your Great Britian's flotilla of submarines will be as efficient as afloat. The importance of
any the experiments recently concladed by Franco will, therefore, be recognised and the work of the submarines in the present war, if they are used, will be watched with deeper intorest.

Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanse Office London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet
3 inches below mean sea level.
