RACE OF THE “KINGSFAUN- CASTLE" AND THE "UNDINE,

Captain Kelk, of the British bark racan," on his way to South America i with a cargo of lumber from Tacoma, spoke of the fear that for a moment gripped his heart when, recently entering the straits, his vessel drifted beneath the glare of Car- manah light on

Vancouver island.

Twios before I have experienced that same feeling, Captain Kolk said, speak. ing of his escape, these other times being A good many years ago. Da such occasiona a man seems to live ten years, in one hour."

To the landsmen present the captain's remark held the trace of a story, and for

their pleasure he spun the following.

I speak of, I was third mate of a littlo vessel,

the "Kingsfaun- The vessel was formerly a ten psøket and ran in the trade between China and England. She was what is known as a composite-built craft and of about 800 tons burden. The tea trade slacking off, the "Kingsfauncastle" and her sister ship, theUudine," were chartered to carry coal between Cardiff and Colombo.

We got cargo aboard at the same time and, both being bound for the same port, there was a scent of a race in the air. This held on strong as we put to sea, our captain being bound he would beat the Undine

or carry away every bit of cotton the vessel carried.

Nothing out of the usual run occurred after leaving port. Three or four days out we lost sight of the "Undine." At the time, being in the lead, we felt safe in ssy- ing we would make Colombo before she could. Getting down in the southern lati- tudes we struck a streak of weather ich was miserable, it being cold and foggy, 90 that sometimes we could barely see's ship's length ahead the mists shut down so clo sely.

This broke away after several days, and one morning this was Christmas morning. on going on deck I found the fog had lifted so I could see for some little distance about us, and, as I stood there I caught

sight of a peculiar roughness on the water ahead of the ship. Just what it was that caused it could not toll. We were bearing down

on it at a good eight knots and the water seemed to be boiling!

ON AN ISLAND,

The steamor "Tagliaferro" recanty re- turged to Sydney from an interesting cruise among the islands of the Pacific outside the regular track of vessele. The United States Government recently resolved to carry out deepsea soundings and surveys in that part of the South Pacifio betwoon Easter Island in the Galapagos group, and the island of Mangareva, in the Gambier group. The "Albatros" was solected for the work. To replenish the bookers of that steamer at different stages of her voyage the "Taglia forro" was requisitioned,

After leaving Westport, New Zealand, the steamer sailed direct for La Perouse Bay, Easter Island, which was reached on November 30. The "Albatross " had not arrived, and, while waiting there, the of ficors and crew found much to interest them at this unfrequented part of the Pacific. There are only three white in- habitants-Mr Cooper (who represents the merchant of Callao to whom it has been leased), his wife, and man. The native population once 3.000,

fore.

is now about 200. The stock carried on the island consists of 10,000 sheep, run. ning wild. 10,000 wild bullocks and 600 horges. At crtain periods the natives round up the cattle, of which a number are slaughtered for hides and tallow, which are shipped to Chili as opportunity offers.

The Island had not been visited for 12 months, and the white residents learned for - the first time of the war between Russia and Japan. The island is described as barren, and the islanders are in very poor condition. The "Tagliaferro" was a month at Easter Island before the Albatross put in an appearance. She then sailed for Mangareva, and on her way called at Pit- cairn Island, the inhabitants of which were glad to receive news of the outside world,

LAXATINE is the mildest aparient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but

Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Megara A, S. WATSON & Co.
