WALES IRELAND.

The rugby football match between Wales and Ireland, played at Swanson on March 11, was won by Wales by 10 points (2 goals) to 3 points (1 try). In their dscription of the match the Standard

Wales were badly beaten foro and aft during the frst twenty minutes. To the strictly impartial spectator they played like a beaten team during this period, when, with sun, ground, and half a galo in- their favour-ideal conditions for their style, by the way they were hardly in the hunt at all, and never once looked danger ous. During this time Thrift (1.) was all but over, after a fine run and pass by Maclear (1.) had made an opening for him which ho atilised by completely boating Davies, (W.) and but för Gwyn Nicholls" (W.) coming across ventre à terre! must have scored. Within two or three minutes first blood came from Robinson (I.) getting over twenty-five yards out in some looser play An awkward angle in the teeth of the wind, and Maclear's place went a few Fards wide. For the next ten minutes play was a trifle more even, and but for a foo tackle by Gwyn Nicholls of Parke, Ireland must have scored again, as the de- fence was just broken when this tackle, brought down Parke

arke and—incidentally, the house. That was the last time Ireland looked really dangerous. Two high punte down wind, add some good work by Mar- gan (W) transfered the scene to ten yards

The victory hinged on this incident. Up to this point the new half (Jones) had play- ed like a tyro. At last he took a pass from Oven (W.), having missed at least six simi- lar ones in succession and by a series of very well-timed feints, all the while dually edging nearer the line, he completely hood-winked the Irish third line, which was watching for a pass that nover came, and was tackled by Landers (1) an the line, over which he fell, right between the posts, This try looked a master-piece, one of which any half-back known to fame might be very proud. That Davies (W) converted is a detail, the point is that the Welshmen had discovered, through Jones (W.), that the Irish defence was rot impregnable, and from this point to the end they were a different side. That much conceded, how ever, they were very lucky in their second score. Not in the actual obtaining thereof by E Morgan (W), but in the forward rush which preceded the scrum, whence the

It occurred as follows.

Following the first Welsh goal the Irish- mcn returned to the charge nothing daunt- ed, and were in the Welsh twenty five, when a breakaway by the home forwarde commenced, which ended a few yards from the Irishline About half way through this movement a Welsh forward, yards off side, played the ball, deliberately or not does not signify.

More than one Irish man, unfortunately, eased up on seeing the incident, which was a pity, as play to the whistle is one of the first, laws of big football.

Davios (W) gauged the

force of the wind to a mathematical nicety, converting from about 30 yards out with the wind at right angles to the ball's line of light

DUKE OF WESTMINSTER OBJECTS TO TIPPING..

Some Society Hosts Place Boxes in the Halls and Bedrooms.

One has not heard so very much-this season, says a I ondon correspondent, about the, great tipping' question, and the whole subject is likely to be dropped. Some hosts, though, have very uncertain views about it. The Duke of Westminster is very particular that the men who attend his big shoots at Eaton Hall shall not tip the gamekeepers. In fact, the head steward generally tells those guests who are not aware of this wish of the host that he is requested to inform visitors that the Duke of Westminster strongly abjects to 'tip. ping. Whether this obtains in the house also I do not know.

At other houses boxes have been placed in the hall and bedrooms, so that the guesta: may give what they think fit. The hall is, of course, preferablo, as there no one scas who contributes to the servants' fund, whereas with boxes in the bedrooms the contrary is the caso.

I have bourd, however, of one or two places' in Scotland where the keepers this scason received L5 and even £10 when goed sport has been provided.
