tain Sontt, R., ermmauder of the Dis« Covory Antarono Expedition, a ve ab inter- resting account of the geographical results

attained by is party of explorers.

The Lizy of Antarctis

had brou the subjot ef Rome discussion, and thera was much excuse for exaggeration. Of the meuy hundreds seen by his party very few exceeded mile in length, or 150 feet in height. The largest berg seen was eff King Edward's Land,/apparently aground. It was estimated at about five or six miles in Xanth, and it seemed to run bick for an equel distance.

In this region some very high bergs we a seen, and one was logged as 210 feet in height. The proportion of the submerged to the visible part of an Antarctic Iceberg had been estimated by Sir John Murray as about seven to one; but he (Captains Scott) was inclined to place the proportion as not greater than five to one.

** Tạo main geographical interest of the Discovery Expedition lay in the practical observation of a co-st-line from Mount Melbourne in latitude 744 degrees to Mount 1976 Longstaff in latitude 83 degrees, and of the conditions which lay to the cast and west

pproached, tho confusion” Suspend the cranks and KOTOVAASER- ing more fumerous The ofrection of the movement of the ice-sheet was indicated by the vast ridges encounter ed off the eastern slopes of Mount Terror. where it pressed up and sheared past the land ice, raising numerous parallel pressure ridges. The full extent of this gront sheet of ice must for the present, Captain Scott thought, be merely a matter for surmise. The high mountainous coast. line did not turn to the east north of the eighty-fourth parallel, and whether the level surface of the barrier continued to

skirt the coast line for that distance it was impossible to say, although he was inclined to think it did.

Discussing the position of the geographi-- cal pole, Captain Scott said that if the high coast line were carried for 100 miles beyond one position in the direction in which they saw it, it would be seen making directly towards Graham Land, and he could not but think that it continued to do so. In that case the geographical pole would be situated 300 miles or more from it and on the high ice platenu, which must continue behind if they allowed for the comparative.

BARRISTERS AND THEIR

FEES.

Remarkable Decision.

Pants March 2-The Civil Tribunal of the Seine yesterday delivered a judgment which has spread something like consterna tion among barristers, basing ite finding on the text of the most ancient constitutions of the order of barristers, the Court ruled no that fee can be legally claimed, and that a barrister must content himself with any present his client may think proper to mako to him.

The case which gave rise to this Alarming judgment was that of a certain Mme. Mo

who, reno, a teacher of forcian langusgos, having been libelled by Le Francs, en- gaged the services of Me. Bonzon. This advocate was fortunate or clever enough to to obim 10,000f, damages for his client," and insisted on being paid 1000F. for his trouble. Mme. Moreno at first offered him 100f, but Me. Bonzone inducing her to hand over 1000f. The lady, objecting to mural coercion, sought to ob. tain the restitution of 906f. by bringing the matter before the batonnier of the Order of Barrister but filed. Determined to exhaust every legal mesus, alio then sued Me. Bonzou before the Civil Tribunal, which, yesterday decided that, as Mme. Moreno had not given the 1000. of her own free will, hor advocate must return the 900F.. she claimed, and also pay the costs of the present action,

APPENDICITIS OPERATIONS.

Sir F. Treves' Views.

The meating of the Royal Medical and

·Chirurgical Society, at 20. Hanover-square -on February 28, was a remarkable ono from the fact that rarely have so many eminent members of the medical profession been gathered together. The attendance of -surgeons and physicians must have num-

bored over 200

The object which attracted together such an assemblage was a discussion to pendicitis, in which Sir Frederick Treves, Sir William Broadbent, Sir Lauder Brun- ton, Sir William Bennett, and many more leading medical men were to take part.

Sir Richard, Douglas Fowell was in the chair. Upon every scat were pamphlets -containing particulars of over 3000 cases of appendicitis collected by leading London hospital surgeons.

The actual subject for discussion was The subsequent course and later history of cases of appendicitis, after oporation. It was opened at considerable length by Sir Frederick Treves, who reminded his audience of an occasion in 1887, when, be foro that very society, he had suggested that in cases of appendicitis the appendix should be removed. His suggestion was not very well received then, but he had no reason to grumble at the attention which had been accorded it since.

Sir Frederick Treves, as well as the other speakers who followed him, dealt largely with those unsatisfactory patients who persisted in stating that they suffered from renewed attacks of appendicitis after the appendix had been removed. From the discussion, which was of an extremely

underlying sentiment. It would seem that the practice of holding the girls' festival, if may so call it, was imported from China and it has its origin in a boljof that March ia a peculiarly unfortunate month for girls.

There is to be found in the columns of the Japanese pross generally a sort of breezy indifference to the privacy of the home which is rather astounding to the uninitiated foreigner, Thus for the last few days there has been a surfeit of news about a certain American gentleman of much wealth who distinguished himself some time back by buying a Ktoto geisha for 40,000 yen and subsequently marrying her. The whole story is being retold of how the lady was already married, the sum paid to the husband for the divorce, how much money was expended by the happy pair on their honeymoon trip round the world, how the American people yelled Nippon Banzai when the couple went out driving and how at Paris under similar circum stances the rabble shouted Russia Banzai. Also thrilling details are given as to the cost of the presents brought back for the wife's relations. One journal indulges in unkind speculations as to the probablo duration of the proud husband's bliss and suggests that the damsel's heart has not been won from its allegiance to the first flame although her person was lurod away by the irresistible magnetism of gold, An other foreigner also has been providing the

local fourth estate with "pabuluh of a refreshingly intimate nature. It seems this person's eight-year-old daughter has launchet out as the first foreign geisha in Japan. Perhaps this is nature's compensating balanco, Kioto has lost one distinguished member of the Fascinating profession, but Germany, (the young lady is Teutonic.) supplies b stitute. The Japanese papara however do.

Toxio, March 19. Inevitably Japan is shrieking itself hoarse over the ront of the Russians at Moukden, Banzais ussault the air at all possible and impossible hours, and the edge is taken off the cold by the blazo of warm colour lent by the flags which funt triumphantly from everything to which they can be attached. Yesterday there was a huge demonstration at the Hibiya Park which was of course marked by the greatest enthusiasm. A few people however, who, while every whit as loyal as the most noisy demonstrator, havo man- aged to keep their heads cool, are privately expressing the view that altogether too much money is being wasted over these concrete ebullitions of joy. They hold with an amount of reason that Japan, not- withet Anding the cheering state of her in , is a poor country at the best and that there is a great deal of distress as the result of the protracted hostilities. They urgo that the money that fires up in fireworks would be better utiliser for the relief of the sufferers. But the Government realises the value of keeping the fisio of patriotism

Laxatine being non-irrit able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxstine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs A. S. WATSON & Co. Mr and Mrs Willo Epping are taking the air in their electric broughan, which is curiously labelled D, T. 402]

Mrs Epping (after holding her broath while the brougham passes under the hostrils of a much knes capped pair of livery stable horses and cuts a few hairs off the early Victorian tail of an actor's hack) I will be angry! I suppose I can be angry if I choose? There is no law against my being angry is there ?

Mrs Epping (forcing her fingers into a new pair of gloves), - But what makes me Dearly impotent

Epping (with genuine admiration.) That's a spiffiu' good word, by Jove ! Where'd y pick it up ! -

Mrs Epping (sailing through his romark as though it were a school of herrings) is that you don't think I've got any right to be angry over the matter. I'm not thick-skinned

Epping (holding up a dumpy forefinger). Eusy all?” You are, you are. You can almust see through it.

Mrs Fpping (giving him some wifely elbow with pleased annoyance). Be quie, Willie,

I tell you I'n not thick-skinned, but if I

you to agree with mo, I think you're the most obstinato, disagreeable person I're ever had ever had the misfortune to meet. I wish I'd never met you - Lou and your horrible temper are doing more to under- mine my nervous system than all my social duties put together. Your violent attacke upon me make me tremble from head to foor. How shall I ever be able to pull myself together sufficiently to interview my dressmaker (Her hand flutters to- wards the flask, and she takes a pull.)

Epping. Um

Mrs Epping. Now, be a dour, and say that I'm not a withered flower, a decadent sodioty woman.

Epping. My dear, if you'll only go easy, I'll call you anything. If you like I'll call you a snowdrop, a blossom of Mayfair,

Mrs Epping. Oh, you sweet little thing. COSMO HAMILTON in the World
