That in precisely Mr Kipling's presont position. He is committing suicide unawares, drown→ ing himselt in a sea of technicalitia, for- getting the songs and the legends with which he made his name. And his interest in the mere technical side of life has been growing on him very rapidly M'Andrawa

The majority of those who read Their Lawnl Occasiona, for example, will, through the first three-quarter of the story, be con- acious only of bewilderment, partly through the accumulation of tiresome teoricalities, partly for a reason artistically more legitimate the allusiveness of the dialogue. The Captive, another South African story, and the one that has the place of honour in the volume, also introduces us to I in the person of Laughton

the unexpected in O. Zigler, the inventor, who has joined the Boers merely because to do so will give him the best opportunity of testing the Laugh- ton-Ziglor automatic two-inch fieldgun with self-feeding hopper, single oilcylinder recoil and ball-bearing gear throughout.". Zigler is not a very original type, but for a didactic character he is exceedingly lifelike and amusing. Here is his description of the English Lord in Capetown:

This Lord was a crank on guns, and he took charge of the Zigler. He had his knife into the British system as any American. He said he wanted rovolution, and not reform, in your Army. He said the British soldier had failed in every point except courage. He said England nceded

a Monroe doctrine worse than America now doctrine, barring out all the Continent. and strictly devoting herself to developing her own Colonies. He said he'd abolish half the Foreign Office, and take all the old hereditary families clean out of it, because, he said, they was expressly trained to fool around with Continental Diplomats, and to despise the Colonies."-

Did he know my General? Yes. He knew em all. Called 'em Teddio and Gussie and Willie. They was all of the very bost, and all his dearest friends; but he told me confidentially they was none of 'om fit to command a column in the field. He said

TRIPLE EXECUTION AT

MANILA.

A Public Affair.

The triple execution recently carried out in Manila seems to indicato: that the Americans in Manila would, if sufficient

provocation were offered, resort to the lynching scenes, which are reported as common in the Southern States of America, writes a correspondent.

Three ladrones were condemned to death for the murder of a Spaniard in the employ of the American Secret Service, and the

ENTERTAINMENT AT THE

DOCKS.

An Enjoyable Evening.

A must enjoyable entertainment was given at the Kowloon Docks on Saturday evening and was attended by upwards of 300 people. For the occasion the large drawing loft was converted into a theatre and answered the purpose admirably. The entertainment throughout reflected great credit on those who were responsible for the arrangements and every item was great ly enjoyed. So well pleased were visitors from the Hongkong side of the harbour that the Dock Orchestral Society has been asked to give an entertainment in the City Hall and it is to be hoped that they will be able to do so.

AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but LAXATINE is tion and even in large doses is harmless. Inxatine being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladica especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Mesara A. S. WATSON & Co.
