HOW COPPER KILLS
BACILLI.
Man would seem to have at last discover ed an effective weapon against typhoid fever, Asiatic cholera, and similar merciless ecourges which invade our intestinal and digestive organs through polluted water. It is yet too soon to declare positively that we shall exterminato these drond diseases, but we hare good reason to believe that we shall be able to drive them out of cities and towns, and camps and prisons, and wherevor men are living herded together. The weapon is not of steel or iron, but cop per, the most convenient form being the common compound of copper and sulphur known as blue vitriol-copper sulphate,
Every school laboratory contains some beautiful: blue-crystals of copper sulphate. Schoolboys for generations have dabbled with these blue crystals or have watched their teachers use them for ordinary class- room experiments.
And yet who would have imagined that a pinch of these crystals dissolved in the water tank in the attic, or in the cistern or well, would kill any typhoid gernis that might be lurking there; that its use would crowd- ensure healthful drinking water in a ed military camp, that it would. extermin- ate malaria and yellow-fever-carrying mos- s and swamps by quitoes in stagnant pools s destroying the vegetable organisms on the mosquito larvae feed; that it won'd, in a few hours, make the water of an evil smelling and foul-looking city reservoir, containing billions of gallons of wator, pure and sweet?
It has been known for a long time that copper destroys bacteria, but the metal has not been much used heretofore for the purpose, because scientists have generally believed that the dose required to kill the bacteria must be very concentrated as concentrated that it would poison the water or substance containing the bacteria, and make the cure worse than the evil. The new short weapon, with its clip loader, should give excellent results at close quartors and this is a great point to have gained, for the Russo-Japaneso compaign has shown that hand-to-hand conflicts must frequently ocour in modern warfare. Those who de- preciate the new arma forget that it has only prolonged experiments, and that exports been adopted after the most careful and
painful attention. It has the merit of being a universal rifle in other words it will be the rifle for Cavalry as well as Infantry, the garbino having been abolished. As an ounes of practice is worth many pounds of theory, the merits of the rifle will be best tosted by the returns from regiments. In India a number of battalions have the short rifle and they will be exercised with it on the range and in field- firing. We have little doubt that the shoot ing will be straight and that the number of

In general dimensions the new ship will closely resemble the Discovery, which was built for the British Antarctic expedition at Dundee, and which has recently return ed after successfully battling with storm ice. In fact, ho will dispense with topmaste and extra spara in the interests of lightness.

anco arrived from the shore between 3 and
3.30. A large quantity of cotton con- signed from Bombay to Kobe was fire and water damaged, but we understand that the two or three hundred bales for Yokohama were practically untouched. The damage to the vessel is not great. The lower deck beanis, which were red-hot when the fire was at its height, nro twisted out of shape, as also is the massive iron bulk-head.
