3000 Miles Without a Stop,
After two years of experiment with a locomotive which promises to revolutione the entire railroad system of the world, the manngers of the Southern Pacific Road (US) havo almost within reach the new tireless, smokeless, waterless, und cinder- legs locomotive of the Diesel Engine and International Power Company.
It was reported at the local offices of the company (says the New York American MEETING of HIS MAJESTY'S Journal of November 20) that within A JUSTICES of the PEACE will be several weeks the monster would be ready for business, and the world would be treated to a sight never before, imagined. that of seeing an engine travel from New York to San Francisco without a stop either for coaling, watering, or viling.

The new engine is under the process of construction at the works of the Interns-- tional Power Company, whose offices are in New York, and its building is being closely watched a d managed by Joseph Hoadley and Walter Knight, two of the most expert 'mechanics and engineers in the world.
The
he story of the building of the new engine will hold a place among the trials and tribulations of the early inventors, who word laughed at and harassed at every step of their progress,
Two years ago the Southern Pacific Rail Way Company, after an inspection of the possibilities of the internal combustion locomotive, based on the principle of the Diesel engine, decided to take up the new proposition and order the first engine.

He is the au- thor of the present sanguinary war, the marplot of the military staff, and the main obstacle to the peace to which he has so often piblicly done lip-service. The Tear was fully persuaded that there would be no war; he would not listen to the suggestion that Japan might fight:
Well meaning at bottom, but logic proof and mystical, he instinctively followed the example of the vampire which's fans his victime while sucking their blood, Under his predecessors Russia had grown and thriven" in this way, and why should- sho not continue to grow in like manner under him! So overweening was his confi. dence in his own prophetic vision that he was impervious to the arguments of the wisest of his own responsible advisers and risked the welfaro of his subjects on the slender chance of his being a Moses to his people. And he resisted his Ministers, not | with the harmless swagger of a vain- glorious youth, but with the calm settled presumption which medical psychologists Joscribe as incurable.

LONGEST TRESTLE BRIDGE IN
THE WORLD.
When the Central Pacific Railway, now a part of the Southern Pacifio system, was first built across the middle west of the United States, the engineers found that the Great Salt Lake of Utah lay directly in the way of the railway. Instead of bridging the water they ran the line round the
northern shore of the lake. As time wen
u and became more valuable, it was do- cided to connect the town of Ogden, on the oast of the lake, with Lucin, on the west, by means of a great bridge. The distance saved was to be 43 miles. To make the connection named it was necessary to build two bridges over two arms of the lake. One of these is the longest trestle bridge in the world. The total length of the trestle on the lake is just short of 23 miles. In course of constructing the bridge the principle followed was to build embank ments as for into the water as safety allow. ed, and then to bridge the rest of the line on piles. In sonte places the depth of the water was.281t, and piles 60ft. long, joined tour on top of each other, were driven. firmly into the mud, Gravel was obtained from pita some three miles distant, and relays of men were kept busy for many months working the seam shovels to a depth of 25ft, Gales were so common that machinery valued at over £20,000 was lost- during the work of construction.

the work, were required in building the bridge. The work proceeded at the rate of one mile and a quarter of trestle per week. The longest stretch built in any one week, without interruption, was one mile, done during five days in the daylight only.
Across the east arm of the lake, an en- bankment supports the bridge for nearly its entire length, a gap of 600ft, in width being left for the waters of the Bear River to flow through. Across the west arm of the lake in a stretch of trestle 11 miles long, with an ombankment approach of four miles at each end.
The most serious difficulty which con fronted the enginers and workmen was the. now notorious bottomless pit," or “sink," discovered about a mile from the eastern shore of the lake. For over six months' cons and tons of solid rock were poured into this cavity, only to disappear out of sight and touch. But perseverance conquered, and the filling finally deserved its name. For a whole month over 250 tons of inate-
ril a day were tossed into this appalling quagmire Engineers now believe that the foundation can never be disturbed.
A railing breast-high has been placed on both sides of the permanent trestle, and into this refuges have been built for the benefit of workinen and pedestrians.

Although I am only twenty-six years of ago, said this man, Mr Wm. Smith, 52 Sandhill, Newcastle-on-Tyne, I have had No fowor than four attacks of rheumatic fever. The health and strength I have now regained I owe entirely to Dr Williams' pink pills. A wonderful medicine, air! Each of my attacks of rheumatic fever left During my last me weaker than bofore attack-the most severe, which lasted over eight months-I suffered agonics. Night after night I did not oloso my oyes, no great was the pain left by the drogs of-the- fever. In the hope of finding relief, I changed my doctor. Three or four did all they could for tie, but I was tired of lying in bed drinking medicine.
When I dragged myself out of bed I was a mere wreck. I despaired of ever earning my living again. I went for a change to my brother in the country, more dead chan alive. There I heard of Dr Williams' pink pills. My brother had taken them, and as they had done him a great deal of good he recommended them to mo.
'I took them, and soon I felt a little better. They effected a very marked improvement. I have just finished my second bottle and 1 can assure you that I am now ablo to stand the work of a tram conductor without any trouble whatever.'
