The Canadian mail steamer - Moant brought from Vancouver, and left Fiji, Mr Charles J. Gildden and don, of Boston, U.S.A., who are round the world Me Gliddon has already achieved notoriety for his motoring feste, which will certainly be largely increased at the conclusion of his present tour. He crosses from Suva to Atokland, and then goes on to Australin. Prior to embarking at Vancouver, Mr and Mrs Gliden had Already covered 353 miles in their car, and bad some novel experiences on the maca- darn and steel highways that lead from New England to British Columbia The drive

on the road was from Boston lis, via Chicago, 1783 miles, in 96 hours the other, certainly the most remarkable on the railway lice from Minneapolis to Vancouver, B., 1803 miles, in 60 hours.

Readers of The World's Nows will be interested in knowing that the motor-car used is a regular 24-horse-powor touring car, four cylinders, equipped with 40in. wheels, the very same car which Mr Glid- der used in his now famous European drives, and when ho crossed the Arctic Circle.

When the journey from Minneapolis to Vancouver was made, the car was trans- formed from road vehicle to a railway carriage by removing the rubber-tyred wheels and substituting a set of steel- immod flanged wheels quitable to running upon the tracks, and by locking the stoer- ing device. The car, with four passengers and luggage, weighed 6000lb., including the wheels, which weighed 13001b,

The railway trip, in incident, variety of conditions, and magnificent scenoty, sur- passed in interent any part of the tour up to that time. Thus says Mr Glidden himself, When the railway run was suggested, the officials threw cold water on it. They considered it impracticable. But Colonel Thomas Lowry, president of the 'Soo1 Pacific, and Sir Thomas - Shaughnessy, president of the Canadian Pacific, thought otherwise, and the necessary permission was given.

And thus it came to pass that ther motorists were able to test their car under novel conditions, and enjoy the magnificent scenic beauty of the Canadian Rockies, the Cascade and Coast Rangar, and the mighty

After considerable mechanical difficulties, the railway wheels were fitted to the car ju the railway shops and carefully tried Con | siderable adjuting proved necessary, but eventually the car started forward on her 1803 mile trip with her schedule strictly down. As the car drew slowly out of Minneapolis, the vice-president of the road said to Conductor Horne, Remember, you are now running as a train. At many meating points on the track it was found that passing trains had taken a siding, thus giving the motor-train a clear run, The average speed over plain and mountain for the entire distance was 50 miles an hour, Mr Glidden says that with a clear track he was sure his car would have averaged 40 miles an hour.

When a start was made on the iron road;- the wheels at first refused to grip the raile,. but finally, taking hold, moved rapidly after a fast disappearing express,

This is truly comfortable and casy re marked Mrs Glidden, and I believe, 500 miles will not fire us as much as 100 on the highway or one mile on that Albany-Utica

road

After a little time the boxes got hot, and a stop was necessary to cool them down. After the first three days this difficulty was overcome, and the car aped along without lot

or hindrance. On one occasion whi'st going

WELFARE WORK.

One of the most promising movement■ of modern times towards the moral, in tellectual and physical betterment of employees is known by the significant name of Welfare Work. As s rule a welfare manager is appointed. He is a recognised intermediary between employer and em ployed, and his exclusive duty is the improvement of the conditions of workers. Many great industrial concerns In America have adopted this additional means of caring for their staffs, and in Great Britain the idea is receiving favourable considor. Ation.

Amongst the English firma that have an international reputation for welfare work are Messrs Cadbury Bros. Ltd., Lever Bros, Ltd., and Burroughs Wellcome

Co. In America the National Cash Regis- ter Company, the pioneer in welfare work, is a living example of the great benefite which employers and employees derive from liberal and, broad-minded treatment of their helpers.

Forty continental and district managers of the N. C. R. Co. visited the Wellcome. Club at Dartford, an institution provided by Mr. Henry S. Wellcome for the 1300 employees of Burroughs, Wellcome & Co., the wholesale druggists. The delegates journeyed to Dartford on Thursday, Janu- ary 19th, and inspected the city houses, gymnasium, liberary, baths, sports fields,
