TWO GIGANTIC LINERS.

Competing for the Orlent Trade.

The growing trade between America and the Orient, combined with the struggle bet- ween American transportation companie to reach the eastern markets, bave reaulted in the launching by the Great Northern Steamship Company of two mammoth pas senger and cargo vesnols--the "* Daliota and Minnesota." When one considers that each of the veseels has acommódation for 250 cabin passengers, 08 intermediate and 1,500 steerage and quarters for a crew of 250,their eizo may be estimated. Add te this cargo space for 23,000 tons of 2,240 lbs or 28,000 tons of 40 cubic feet, as well as weight of stores and equipment, and one gets and idea of their immensity.

The company have recently issued two attractive, illustrated booklets, which deal. with these vessele, the circumstances which were responsible for their construction, the routo traversed, with photographic glimpses of the various ports of call and a number of other items of great inter est to prospective travellers or those con- cerned in the advance of passenger or cargo steamers. These booklet have been for warded to us by Mr Goo. Sutherland, Gen- eral Traffic Manager, Seattle, and a glance through them is sufficient to prove their value.

From the description contained in these it would appear that the Minnesota " is a magnificent passenger vessel spacious, and luxurious, and well appointed in

every de tail, down even to padded children's play-

Certainly every modern convenience that ingenuity con suggest-or that money can purchase has been installed. An important featuro is that almost every stateroom for cabin pass- engers is located above the weather deck as near amidships as possible. A specially constructed compartment for valuables is: situated on the lower 'tween deck, and can- be reached either by hatch No. 0 or main deck. It is cement, wond-lined, with outer walls and doors of steel plate. There are eighteen hatches on each vessel, and thirty. two winches and booms for handling cargo, some of them fitted to lift weights up to thirty and lifty tona. The special booms for lifting these heavy weights are stepped on deck, while the ordinary hooms are fit- ted on platforms built on the monsts about eight feet above the decks. The whole cargo hoisting apparatus is operated by winches which, being fitted with steel wire, are practically noiseless. "THE OSAKA SHOSEN KAISHA.

The 39th report to the shareholders saysDuring the half-year ending Dec. 31, owing to the continuance of the war, a large number of the Company's steamers still remained under Government charter, and the chartering of many steamers had to be continued to fill their places, so as to maintain, without dislocation or diminü- tion, all the Company's regular services. Further than that, the Directors have also extended the sphere of the Company's carrying business very successfully, not-

·withstanding many difficulties encountered,

There were, therefore, more steamers chartered than during the previous term.

Consequently, the expenditure during the past half-year has risen to larger figures than hitherto, boing Yen 3,561,601.841, showing an increase of Yon 161,820.450 over that of the previous half-year. But potwithstanding this, the Directors are pleased to be able to report that the result of the half year's working likewise, shows a considerable increase of revenue, say, Yen 4,843,327.112, being Yon 415,772.847 more than that of the term before.

As specially reported to you at the end of last your regarding the issue of new shares, they have already been paid for in part, and the balance amount will be paid in periodically according to the terms speci- fied. The crowds of lightly clad coolies who watched the races on Saturday from the shelter of their blue eotton umbrellas pre- sented a rather cheerloss spectacle, but at all eventsshowed that they were not easily to be prevented from participating in the sport of Kings'. One individus, however, attracted general admiration, and put even the po licemeti, who pretended to take no notice of the weather, to shame. He was dressed in A suit of last summer's whites, with boots

The deceased was admitted to the hospital on entering the gaol and died of heart failure. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned.

Major-General Trepoff, the newly appointed Governor-General of St. Peters burg and late Chief of Police of Moscow, has long been a familiar figure in the old capital, either in the large white building in the Tvorskoi Boulevard, where his office was situated, or dashing about the town in his carriage at breakneck speed to the im minent danger of unwary foot passengers. His record is not exactly a splendid one. It is generally believed that he owes his advancement to the fact that he is the illegitimato son of a very high personage, and his appointment as chief of police in Moscow to the fact that his predecessor was dismissed for the disaster which occurred at the Tear's Coronation in 1895,

The students and other revolu- tionists had been organizing the men into secret nocieties, and had occasionally brought about strikes of a semi-political character. Being a believer in the doctr ne similia similiabus curantur, General Trevo determined to organise secret societies and strikes among the workmen on his own account, Ao as to can them away from the political movemont. Numerous police spics managed to obtain employment in the various factories, and proceeded to

incite the workmen against their employers and against the rival agitators, whom they accused of being in the pay of the capital ists. A workmen's union, under police auspices, was formed, and the guiloleas operatives were promised that, whatever happened, the employers should be made

During his residence at Moscow he has proved himself thoroughly incompetent in every way. The streets of Moscow, which had been brought to a semblance of order by his predecessor, became a perfect chaos of confusion, without the least attempt to regulate the traffic. The town police are frequently absent from their beat, and not infrequently drunk. The cabdrivers drive RESERVE as they please and how they please. In the outlying and poorer districts crimes are of constant occurrence, and the general state of public security is deplorable. General

Trepoff's own preoccupation is to see that certain minutiae of the regulation are duly observed. He would come down with a heavy hand on the biliard salon keeper": who while authorized to have two tables, actually had three; but as for the good government of the town, that was his last

The manager received the delegates, who began by demanding 10,000 roubles (£11,000) as *compensation for past injuries,' huge increases of salary, and various other im- possible advantages. The manager refused to acende to these demands, the origin of which was only ton clear, and dismissed them. Then the workmen wont out on strike.
