He did not mean that he had found the theatre an abominable thing. With the exception of one pieco of putrescence, now happily dead and buried, he found nothing abominable in it, and much that was most admirable. But it was the good side of the theatro that had made him most sad,

because the better the play the more mon-

strously wicked it was confine the sujoy- ment of it to the handful of well-to-do poople who alone could afford to pay the present prices.

The theatre at present was one of the perquisites of the middle-classes, It ought to be the common inheritance of the whole people. One of the signs of a new era would be that the poor had the theatre opened unto them. At present we barred them from what might be a popular uni- versity both of morals and mannors. The immense majority of our fellow-citizens were living at this moment in a most de- plorable state of theatrical destitution. The way of salvation for the theatre, as for the Church, was the way of sacrifice.

The theatre with such a fellowship as he hai alluded to would really teach a body of doctrine which, though not theologically formulated, was nevertheless a real creed, capable of exciting the highest darres of enthusiasm. The crood was that life was a serious thing, that the problents of life ought to be seriously considered, and that there was no method by which they could be so vividly brought home to the mind, the heart, and the imagination of man as by the stage-play.

The Salvationista raised last self-denial week no less than £70,000. Was it to be believed that out of our rich, refined, play. loving population there were not to ba

REVIEWS.

HANA, A DAUGHTER OF JAPAN. By Gen.

sai Mural. Hoshi Shimbun,

Tokio. This is one of the most attractive books from the point of view of get up-that has been published for some time. The "book is quite a novel experiment for it mingles the English language with Japanese thought, and is worth perusing to see how the task is managed. Were it not that the author deals too lengthily at intervals with Japanese cookery, the behaviour of troops in battle, and other matters having no direct bearing upon the story, the book could be called excellent. It is written with a patriotic motive, and perhaps to this must be ascribed the extraordinary purity and goodness of some of the characters. How really patriotic the author is, is shown by letter which accompanies the book, In it Mr Murai says:- *Japan is now at war with one of the greatest of world-powers. Greed, insati- able greed, on the part of that power onused the war, and Japan, finding her very existence imperilled, dauntlessly pick- ed up the gauntlet insidiously dropped by Russia. Our soldiers are bravely fighting and dying at the front for Emperor and country; needs must we who remain behind in safety do our share, however, humblo nad feeble, in the Great War. I felt that I could best serve my country by following my own metier and writing a book that would, in a slight measure, display some of the characteristics of my countrymen."Hana" is the result.'

Mrs: Susan Helders was born in England some seventy-eight years ago, and came out to this colony 71 years ago. She has kept a grocery store at Van de Lour and Longmarket Streets, Cape Town, for 38 years, and is well known to many merchants and residents in Cape Town, In a letter dated Angast 16th, 1904, she says:- I em seventy-eight years of age, and am positive I owe the prolongation of my life to that excellant remedy, Mother Seigel's Syrup. Thirty year ago I fell into a low weakly state of health. I lost my appetite and, what was worse, I could not sleep at nights, and I became nervous and startled at the least noise or sound. I was also troubled with bilionmess, and my stomach could not retain anything I ato. My bowels acted irregularly and caused spitting headaches. Doctors did not appear to anderstand my case, and instead of becoming any better I grew worse.

I was conversing with a friend one day about the good qualities of medicines, when I was told that Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup would cure me if I would give it a trial. I began to use it, and from that day I com- menced to mend. All the very distressing symptoms have left me, and I have been able to attend to business over since my care, which was seven years ago. My Ohildren all use Mother Seigel's Syrup for indigestion, and 1 recommended it to a number of my customers,"

Mr. I. de Klerk is a foreman packer in one of the largest wholesale houses in Port Eliza- beth. He was born in Scath Africa, and came to Port Elizabeth from Aberdeen, C.C., fteen years ago. He lives in Sprigg Street. Writing cn July 27th to the proprietors of Mother Seigel's Syrup, he says "Mother Seigel's Syrup has proved of inestimable value to me. Five years ago I fell into a very bad state of health through indigestion. For months

The Belllios Medal Presented

to Dr. Forster,

The brave act of Dr A, F. Forster, who' so courageously rescued, two Chinese chil dren who were imprisoned us

under an overtuned sampan in Decembar, has been recognised. The trustees of the Belilios medal have taken note of the action and yesterday Dr Forster was handed the medal. Although the Pelilios medal was instituted in 1884, Dr Forster is, we understand, only the second recipient.

The Belilios medal is a large silver medal and is in the shape of an eight pointed star, In the centre there is engraven a ropreson- tation of the Judgment of Solomon, round which there is a laurel wreath, green inlaid- work. It is almost needless to remark that whatever may have been the primeval con- dition of this planet (which, in spite of its fogs, is probably more desirable as a place of residence than any of the others, Venus 2181 included) it was, without doubt, even so late as the Stone Age, almost entirely dostitute of furniture. Even the little that existed in those days was very expensive, and still more uncomfortable. It possess ed, however, the merit of durability—that was, so to speak, ita only redeeming feature; a fint razor, for.instance, will not carry fine an edge an a Kropp or a Mappin, but it will preserve it a million times longer.

There is no evidence that the working man in those days got any wages, and if he did, the savings of a wholò continent could not have bought a piano or a sewing ma- chine.
