The entanglements were 334 shattered as a sudden wind-blast demolishos the cunningly contrived spider's web. Past the pitfall thoy dashed, and then they came upon an unoccupied trench circling-

Before reaching it a bullet struck Tachibana's sword belt and passed through the right arm. Like most of the Japanese officers, he was ambidextrous, so, changing his sword to his left hand, he dashed on, and engaged a burly Russian, who proved to be a handy man with the bayonet. The Russian was not deficient in pluck either, as he had sprung forward out of the trench to meet the officer, But he was no match for the splendid swordsman, wounded though he was. Parrying his
desperate thrust, Tachibana stepped in close and clove his head in twain with one-

love that the cominander had awakened in the lower grades of the servico. Ychida saw the gallant major fall, but not before, with the sound of resonant banzais, the Imperial Aag of Japan had been planted over the fortress. He hastenal to his side; but at that instant the Russians, who thoroughly realised the importance of this hill; sent a paramountly strong force of infantry to oust the Japanese. Well-it is no disgrace to acknowledge it, considering the force they had-they succeeded. The fight waxed so fierce that the corporal, grasping his rifle, ran out and took his lit tle part in it; but, soon realising that the time had not arrived for the permanent occupation of the position, he returned to the almost insensible cominauder, and en- deavoured to get him down the hill, to enfo'y. However, the enemy was pouring in a hot fire, and a bullet struck the major in the breast and another the corporal in the breast and left hand.
At this stage I prefer, instead of any weak words of mine, to quote the letter which Captain Sato a devoted friend of Major Tachibana-addressed to H.R., the Crown ince, whose chamberlain the major had been some days before the battle-

gether. When the corporal opened his eyes JAPANESE ART CURIOS AND SILK :(the fortress had then been recaptured by the emeny) bullets were being rained' upon them. Creeping out of the ditch, he dragE ed the commander's body after him, and, crawling upon all fours, he won his way to a sheltered place, where he covered the insensible body with his own, watching the while for a chance to get it back to his own lines. This story takes but little time in the telling, but any reader who has the faintest knowledge of war will readily understand when I say that evening had begun to close when these events took place. To resume: 'At 6.30 p.in. the gallant major breathed his last. When the sun had set the wound- ed corporal found two or three slightly wounded comrades, and he enlisted them in the sad and solemn service of conveying the major's body back to the brigade staff
office.
There it was found that Tachibana had sustained seven wounds-one in the abdomon, two in the breast, two in the thighs, one in the arm, and one in the but- tock. The last words of this gallant gentle. anan were that he felt honoured in giving up his life in the service of Japan on the birthday of the Crown Prince."
Kipling has written-

Writing with regard to the Australian Éleven, which should now be in Now Zealand on the way to England, Short- 2181 slip' in the Sydney Mail says:-
}
With regard to the batting, I am doubtful whether we over had so fine HT all-round side; but we are endly deficient in a hitter of the type of Bonner, or Massio, or Percy M'Donnell, or Dr Scott: The value of having a couple of hit era on your side has been demonstrated time after time We have, it is true, fast Boorers in. those past players whose names I have mentioned, and, therefore, would obviously render from first to last moro servico during the tour. That would, however, depend a lot upon the weather. But much as wo may regret the absence of a Bonner, it is a difficult question to Bay. Even supposing one were available, who should retire to make room for a giant hitter? The position of everyone in the team who has any claim to be regarded 88 a bowler or a wicket-keeper would be safe, and a woold Trumper ́s, Duff's, and Hill's, and that accounts for eleven of the 14. The remaining three are Darling, Gebra, and Gregory.
If at the present moment we hud hitter. of the clase mentioned the only man we would displace an immediate form would be Gehrs, for Darling's judgment, which is of more Importance than most people think, and Gregory'a fielding would have to be taken into consideration. But, as above
LAXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but stated, a good deal, of course, depends
upon the season-whether it is dry or wet.
On a wet pitch a hitter would be invalu-
cortain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Laxatine being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to Indies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are, irritable or disented. Laxatino is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Mesura A. S. WATSON & Co..LD.,able. He would displace a bowler, even if have been appointed the Hongkong Agents for this preparation.

a batsman did not make way for him.
Given every man in form the side is a formidable one, for the weakest. Cutter, has got his half-century in first-class cricket. There is no necessity to say any thing about Trumper, who is apparently in good health, Duff, Hill, Noble, and Armstrong. Gehrs is going for the first time. He is a fine batsman, full of cricket, and a capital field. Gregory, who is going for his sixth tine, is in good form, though not getting many runs. Still, he is worth playing for his felling alone, which is a remark W. G. Grace made în 1890. Ho.

As compared with the 1902 team the bowling is weak. Hugh Trumble, veterin, |as.he is, would be a decided acquisition to the side. He is not available.
