THE MYSTERY OF M. SEVETON'S DEATH.

Paris, Dec. 18 The truth about the Syveton scandal is out at last. In exami- nation before the investigating magistrato" yesterday Mme. Syvéton for the first time told the story of the drama,

There had been a violent altercation be tween her husband and herself, in the couree of which she had said: "I will life with you no longer. You must disappear, and never must either I or my daughter see your face again."

מי

M. Syvoton took the hint, and lay down in his study before the unlighted gas stove, with his head so close to the row of escaping pipes that he could not help breathing in five times more gae than was necessary to kill him. It was in that position that Mme. Syveton found him, She threw herself on him and dragged him away, but he was already dead..

Then the servants washed his face, and, according to the Marin, arranged the mix en scene so that every suggestion of suicids should have vanished, and nothing but the appearance of an accident should remain.

Mme. Syveton : herself・・ stuffed the Intransigeant up the chimney to sup port the theory of accidental poisoning.

THE INVENTOR OF SHRAP- N&L

How many of the general public, oska - the Morning Leader, who read of the elaughter wrought in the present: war by shrapnel know how this terrible engine of destruction came by its expressive name.

“Shrapnel," was once a word an innocent. of terror as the patronymic "Smith. " It was the name of a General of the Royal Artillery, who, a hundred years ago, in- vented the shell which has alain its tens of thousands. To-day the grandchildren of General Shrapnel are living in destitution 215 in Canada, not despite, but because of, their

progenitor's invention.

prior to his death. The General himself said, "Commanding officers who have used my shells and whose written testimony admits that by their use many battles were gained for Great Britain, have titles, hon. ours and rewards, while the inventor is unheard of. The small pension actually involved him in loss, since it was a bar to promotion. A potition to the House of Lords in 1868 asking for some recognition on account of the large eum expended by the General was utterly ignored. Captain Shrapnel trusts that the people of the British Empire will not rest satisfied with the injustine under which his grandfather sufferad.

NEW YORK UNDER THE

NEW YORK, January 4. Not in several years has New York buen visited by a storm of such proportions as that which commenced yesterday and con- tinued until early to-day. All over the city early to-day trolley cars were found blocked in the streets, groat drifts piled against them, preventing them from moving an inen. In many of the cars were snowbound passengers, who had remained in the cars all night rather than facu the blizzard, in tempt to walk to their homes. Because of the severity of the storm policemen were sent out during the early morning hours to rescue persons who had fallen in the snow.

The doors of every station- house were thrown open to the homeless and unfortunate. The city lodging-house was crowded by men, women and children. Although thousands of homeless unfort. unates were given shelter by the various charitable organisations last night, more than a score of men overcome by cold were found lying about the streets to-day. All of these probably will recover under

Treatment.

The superintendent of the city lodging | house said that 500 persons, nearly all of them men, applied for shelter during the sight. Only six of the 500 wore overcoats, and hardly more than half of the 500 had
