NAVAL WEDDING.

House-Goodfello

The wedding at Trinity · Cathedral, Shanghai, on Feb. 4, of Lieut. Albort E. House, R.N., of H.M.S. "Sirius," "and Miss Ellie Goodfellow, was quite a naval function, and WAS very numerously attended, the bridegroom being a very popular offiser, and the brido a Shanghai girl, with an untold number of friends and soquaintance.

Captain Moore, R.N., of the "Sirius," and his officers were, of course, presant, Land some twenty bluejackets and marinos, with wedding favours, attended to do honour to their lieutenant; who never wore his uniform on a happier occisión.

All brides look charming, but in Miss Goodfellow's case the adjective must be underlined. Dean Walker performed the Ceremony, the service being fully choral, Mr B. G. Toum being at the organ, and on its conclusion, the guard of honour from the "Sirida" took the ponies out of the

CATTIR

› of the fortunato couple, and drew them to the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs A. W, Maitland, at the Imperial Bank of Chins, on the Bund, where the reception was held.

**

Most significant were the words of the 1376 spokesman of the crew of the “Sirius" to the bride, in presenting her with the token for which they had subscribed: Well, Miss, if Lieutenant House makos as good a husband as he is an officar, you'll be a happy girl."

FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE

COLISEUM.

Shortly after 8 o'clock on the night of Jan. 6, almost at the conclusion of the great Derby rage at the Coliseum, London, as accident took place which resulted in the death of one of the jockeys, The Derby had been run before a crowded audience, and everything went well until towards the end a jockey, who was riding on the outer edge of the outer ring of the revolving plat- form, tried to cross in front of the jockey who was riding next to him. In doing so he jostled the other horse, and that horso, backing slightly, pat its hind hoofs on the solid part of the stage. upon the lattor, together with the forts, opened fire. The vessel was then stopped by torpedo-boats.

FREIGHT CIRCULAR.

Messrs Lamke and Rogge reported on Saturday, 11th February-There is very little fresh to say in regard to freighting matters, the offcet of the Chinese New Year holidays having made itself felt more than usual and, though a week has passed since, chartering operations have not yet been resumed.

In fact, it may take some time longer before a large business will be on record, principally on account of the Southern rice markets being very late this year, but, judging from all appearances, we think it is pretty e fe to predict a rise in freights, which should continue as the opening of the Northern ports draws near.- Tonnage referring to suitable steamers of small and medium size of light draft with tween decks, &c.—still remains scarce and it will be difficult to fill the various in- quiries which are certain to crop up at no distant date.

An to details of the chartering business that has transpired 'during tho past fortnight, the list of settlements. speaks for itself, Suffice it to say that, for reasons already mentioned, no reliable quotations can be given as far as any of the Southern markets are concerned, excepting perhaps Saigon/Philippines in which

direction there have been actual enquiries

resulting in the settlement of a couple of stomers and the demand, though for boats of small size only, still continues.

Coal freights from Japan ports have experienced a further drap partly on account of several large carriers having to ind their way down South again and partly in consequence of coal being in short

HEADACHE AND DEPRESSION.

Banished BY BILE BEANS,

TEADACHE can often be traced to a.

Hdisordered state of the liver and digestive organs which become run down and are unable to perform their work. Bile Beans by their stimulating action assist these organs to a healthy condition. The headache then vanishes as a natural совведенсе.

Mrs Knight, of 17. St. Edmund St., Northampton, England, says.--' My illness commenced at first like a bilious attack, My headache and gradually grew worse. become so bad that I could not stand and

I was so dizzy that I fell down if I tried to I really felt as if I should go mad. move. The attacke commenced a little over five years ago. The pains across my head were 20 severe that I felt utterly helpless.

'I can't convey an adequate idea of my suferings. I lost appetite, and could not digest what I did eat, and felt sick, weary, and worn out. I went to one doctor and then to another. They eased me for about à day, and then the attacks came on as bad I spent a lot of money this way. Each day when I got up I never felt fit for anything. Sometimes I tried to work it off, but it was no use. The pains gradually get worse, and then-when as bad as they Fould be-thank God, I found a cure.

I read of Bile Beans in a Pamphlet brought to my door. There was an account of a similar case to mine which Bile Beans had cured. I thought I would try them, so I started with a bottle, and after I had taken that, my head was getting better. To make sure of a permanent cure I kept en with the Beans for a few months, and now, as you see, I am the very picture of health: All my friends have noticed it. I have never had my head bad since, and in view of this, and my general manifest im-` provement, I can say that Bile Beans have absolutely cured me. I feel like a new woman, and shall always keep some of the Beans in the house."

Fire in Queen's Road.

A fire was discovered at about 10.30

last night at No 89 Queen's Road. The outbreak was on the top floor and was first noticed by some Europeans who were in the vicinity and made an effort to extinguish the flames before the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene. The Brigade, under Chiet Inspector Baker, soon came to their assist- ance and the flames were got under after the top floor and a part of the roof had been burnt. The promises were damaged to the extent of about $1,600 the bottom floor, which was a medicine shop, suffering only from water.

It is reported in Canton that His Excel- lenoy the Viceroy, who has been in Wuchów for some time, is returning to headquarters ce. He is going to hand the resis over to the proper authorities at Wuchów. This seems to imply that he regards his work as finished, that the rebels who have given so much trouble for so many months and at one time were really very threatening have either been killed or acat- tered. On the other hand there are many matters in the capital awaiting his attention and it is believed that there are many who are anxiously hoping that his return will not be longer delayed,

A decree has been issued by the Tsar, which orders the formation of a committee to ascertain the causes for the discontent among the workmen, and to devise such measures as will prevent a repetition in futuro.

The committee is to consist of

representatives of the governmental departments concerned, and the repre- sentatives of industry and workmen.

It is a really serious evil and calls for prompt action on the part of the Municipal Council, but we can hardly hope for a remedy until perhaps a repetition of the Bund tragedy may force the necessity of immediate reform on their dull senses.

The theatrical members of the Country Club have once more dazzled us with their wit and beauty, and we have sat in the cor- reat attitude of spellbound awe at some of the perpetrations feisted upon their friends, There were, it is true, some very bright exceptions, and the namesake of The On New Year's day some of these women Borcater was excessively clever and ovon went to the temple to worship, and, sa the

These men were, it is said, all policemen, They had thought that the affair had blown over, and are naturally chagrined that they have been caught in this way.

The case in which the Deutsch Asintische Bank sued the Wui Shing Hing Bank for $786.84, being damages for alleged breach of contract was concluded at the Supreme Court to day, when His Honour Mr T. Sercombe Smith delivered judgment. It was alleged that the plaintiffs sold the de- fendants a £2000 sterling draft at exchange 1/93 on October 4, 1904, to be taken up on November 30, 1904, which defendants failed to do. Plaintiffs to cover themselves sold a draft for £2,000 sterling at exchange 1/101, thereby losing $785.84, amount claimed.

For nome unaccountable reason, at home, Literary and Debating Societies run in connection with any Church having for their members a class of insipid, goody-goody young men and women who in themselves are sufficient reason why the better class of a clergyman's parishioners leave them things are alighly different and we car prayerfully be glad that the pony-loving, whiskey-drinking and nothing else young man does not put in an appearance at these gatherings. Instead we have a few of the young intelligent and middle-age philosop- hers who can settle quietly down and listen with interest to things which do not direct- ly concern their own welfare. True, some of them would be the better if prunes and prisms were taken from their dictionary, but still it is a pleasure sometimes to leave the clubs, dances and indifferent theatricals and hear a discourse on some subject of general interest. And these thoughts are the result of dropping in at the Union Church Hall to hear the Rev. C. E. Darwent tell of his impression when he visited home last May I was walking over the Garden Bridge after an absence of five years. which took place before the trial, Alice Massot said it was her lover who had the first idea of poison. She denied having used poison, and said she only pretended to have done so in order to inspire patience in her lover, who had threatened to leave her.

Edward Hubác, who is the son of a Judge and whose mother died of a broken heart lately, says that the letters written by him to his mistress were purely romantic. Alice Massot, he says, was continuously discusa- ing a divorce from her husband with him. In one of his numerous letters written while in prison he says, 'I told her I had my degrees to take (he was a young doctor), and after that I should settle down and marry.

Suppose I were free?' said she *I would marry you,' I said.”.

The day after the Captain sailed from Marseilles Alicé said, I'll prove my love to you by poisoning Massot on his return.

I did not take her seriously, but he had not been home two days before he fell ill. I was frightened because I guessed what she

had done, and I wanted to break with her. But chains were round my neck, and I could not.

At this preliminary examination it was palpable what absolute empire Mme. Massot held over Hubac, and that she was jealous up to the point of madness,

To-day Alice Massot was dressed in deepest mourning, and throughout was at. great pains to hide her face from the prying eyes of people in Court, The day was taken up by her examination by the Judge. She generally replied in monosyllables. To the suggestion that she was on familiar terms with many people besides her hus- band, she answered, I kiss all iny cousins." 562 When her husband was ill last year she
