KONGKONG, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1905.

The trade of Groat improvement. Britain and other countries has boen depressed for the last three years, but during the last quarter of 1904 there were signs of improvement, and a development of trade is certain to take place in the Far East after the war, much beyond the trade of past years. These causes and the extension of ocean carriage, which modern steamers make possible at moderate freights, must produce a change in the result of the trading of steamers, if owners will restrict the supply of tonnage more in proportion to the demand.

LAST YEAR'S SHIPPING. JouN White's Annual Shipping Review supplies considerable food for: thought for shipowners, and bears testimony to the great depression which existed last year in the shipping trade. Owners, in particular found employ ment unprofitable, and, though builders also suffered they received a consider- ably larger amount of orders than the state of the trade at the commence- ment of the year promised. The low prices builders were prepared to take for the construction of ships induced many owners to increase their flects, thus clearly proving that the chief factor in the increase of tonnage was the fear of the increase of the price of

Owing to the early hour of publication How The New Year Was Spent. to-day we are unable to give full reports of

sporting events.

Far from the madding crowd and the Bound of bursting crackers residents of the City could not hope to be on Friday night and Saturday, for the Chinese community, during those days, were celebrating the death of the Chineso old year-which to a number, has meant disaster and to others fortunes-and the birth of the new year, for whish, no doubt, good things are hoped.

If noise goes for anything the advent of the 31st year of Kuang Han was wol. comed right royally and the celebrations must have been a huge success, as indeed, as far as it is given to the foreigner to anderstånd such things, they were. Orackers were let off in tons, and are still being let off, and the Chinese community, one and all, appeared to be making the most of the occasion.

Yachting.

Yesterday was another unsatisfactory day for sailing. The wind was light and what there was of it was scuros. The Corinthian Yacht Club held club races for the oruisers and one-design boats. The oruisers sailed to Tathong Island (star- board) and the race was won by "Elfin" (R. S. Witchell). The times were:

For the evening a large portion of the city, with Bonham Strand as its centre, was turned into a gigantic fair where the goods of the East and West met in a strange 'confusion. The stalls could only be num- bered by hundreds. To describe, or oven give an idea of their contents, borders on the impossible. The gallops on Saturday morning were very interesting and quite a contrast to some of the poor runs we have seen lately, The course was in fairly good order, and for to first time this year the outside hurdles were removed, giving the ponies the use of the track proper. The attendance was also the largest of the year, and quite a large number of ladies were present. Pott's Derby ponies made very good impressions, and most of the China ponies galloped well. From present indications the races for these old ponies well be stubbornly conteste ed. The times were:—

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis

of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9,

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet

3 inches below mean soa level.

3

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table..

Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time. February 7th to 13th 1905.
