RETURN OF A COMET,

There is an observatory near Florence, Italy, much associated with cometary obser vation, qe it was from there, that Donati firat observed the man foout object which caused such wonder in the Autumn of 1858,

The successor of Dansti in the Direction ship, M. Temple, was also a successful finder of comets of a less splended type, for his name is given to two small objects of this class, of the kind which return to us- overy few years. Tempel's second periodic comet was discovered by him at Milan in July, 1875, and has a period of five and quarter years. It was observed on its next return in 1878, and, though escaping detec tion in 1883 and 1889, was een when it revi- sited the solar system in 1804 and 1899. The dates show that it was due a win this year, and news has just come to hand that this faint object was observed at Nice by Juvelleon November 30, and again on Docom- bor 1. It argues well for the accuracy of astronomical computation that the observ ation showed the prediction to be only about in second of time in error: The comet is quito low in the sky, and unfav ourably situated for observation in England. Its position on the evening of December 1 is given as R. A. 19h, 40m. 24s., increasing 3m. 455. daily. Declination 24° 46′ 48′′* 137 South, decronsing 3 daily,

having been commenced too late or having been interrupted. In six other cases the pa- tients had succumbed accidentally, though their cure appeared radical. Dr. Doyen de nied that he had kept his treatment secret. In his previous acientific communications he- had detailed the preparation of the active liquids as well as the therapeutic mouthod of employing them. In conclusion, he asked the medical profession to visit his establishment and investigate the results. He expressed surprise that no stops had been taken to verify his assertions, as had been done in the cases of Pasteur and Koch.

+

Prefessor Poieror, one of the most strenu-- ous of Dr. Doyen's opponents, replied to the paper. For himself, he said, he be lieved that there was only one treatment for cancer, namely, the knife. He thought it would be dangerous if the public got hold of the idea that there was a serum for its cure, as patients would want to use it, and would only consent to an operation when it was too late.

By way of pouring oil on the troubled waters, a member of the congress suggested that a commission should be sent to the doctor's house to examine his method, Dr Doyen refused to accept a commission with the powers of control, but agreed to

The Canton Christian College has just completed the most eventful year in its history and one of the most successful. The first semester was closed at Macao in rented buildings, where the College has boo quartered since 1900. The second semester has been spent in temporary buildings on the thirty-five acre grounds of the College at Honglok, Canton, where during these few months, many improvements have been made, such as, a fifty-foot pior, a stone road from the river to the prosent building including a bridge over a canal, an excellent athletic field suitable for football games, and in the College yard the elements of an autdoor gymnasium, Ou Decomber

Messrs Purnail and Paget, of Canton, are acting as supervising architects. The con. tract time calls for the completion of the building within twelve months.

As a fitting close to a year of such hard work and as a relief to the students during the trying period of final examinations, the Lension of studious activity was somewhat relaxed by a few simple recreations. On Saturday afternoon some of the students and teachers attended the closing exercises of the Medical School of the Wornin's Hospital in the charge of Dr Mary Fulton, making a pleasant round trip in the gasoline launch 'Vinette.'

At the close of the night study period at nine o'clock, the two football teams indulged in a lively game by moonlight, in which Captain Tong's team won after thirty minutes of vigorous play by a score of one goal to nothing. So- hearty was the students' participation in this unprecedented nocturnal contest, that it has been determined to perpetuale it as a unique New Year custom in the Canton Cristian College.

The oxaminations closed at noon Tues- day, and that evening the school was enter- tained with stereopticon views, after which the contest in convensational English for the annual prize was hold.

The closing exercises occurred on Wed. nesday the twenty-fifth from these to six o'clock. These were very simple in charac. tor as befitting the temporary nature of the accommodations. One of the large dormi tory halls, converted for the time being into an auditorium, was well filled with Uhinese gentry and foreign residents of Canton.

Acting President Woods presided. The principal address of the afternoon was that made to the students by the Rev. S. G. Tope, of Canton, who spoke on The Supremo Importance of the Acquisition of Knowledge, under the heads. The value of knowledge, the value of time, thorough ness, and perseverance. He aptly illus trated each topic with a well chosen story, and his address, while received with much interest by the foreign part of the audience, was also thoroughly appreciated by the students, for whom it was especially in tended. His simple and yet vigorous English held the attention of the student audiance from beginning to end. The two sentences which he quoted as the basis of his address are so tragically applicable to China that it would be difficult to select better ones. Hear the word of the Lord,- My people are destroyed for lack of know- ledge,Because thou hast rejected know- ledge, I also will reject thee.

The secretary having read the notice convening the meeting the Chairman

We find, how ever, that when we depend entirely upon Chinose translations for Scientific work, we soon come to the end of our rope and that it is only the English speaking students who are able to go higher, During the second semester, we to open our Laboratory in Elemen. tary Chemistry, three of the English HONGKONG HIGH-LEVEL TRAM-

If any of you wish to see our students at their best, we recommend that you visit them in their laboratories and see them handling appar atus, performing experiments and calculat ing results. Ours is not a College of Lot- ters and we cannot be expected to show 562 our best work along the lines of speeches, recitations and debates. We have reason, however, to believe that our English Com- position work will compare favorably with that of any school in Hongkong; for one of our studenta recently car ried off the honors in a competition open to all schools in Hongkong for the best Easay, written entirely by the student himself in English on Chinese New Year Customs. The essay will appear in the next issue of the South China Collegian. However, we do not intend to study Shake- speare or to specialize in English. We have good equipment already on hand for Physical and Assay Laboratories, but as yet we have no students ready for these lines of work.
