SCENE IN THE HUNGARIAN

DIET.

On December 17 we published a special cable with reference to the scenes in the Hungarian Diet- In connection therewith the Overland Mail says A quarter of an hour before the timo appointed for the opening of the Diet at Buda-Peeth on Deo. 13, saya Reuter's representative, the Op- "position had mustered almost in their full strength, while of the Government not a single member had

put in an appearance. The approaches to the President's platform were occupied by the parliamentary guard. On seeing them the Opposition Deputies shouted, ' Are you, as Hungarians, not ag. hamed of performing such a duty M

Viktor Rakosi, the Secretary, proceeded to ascend the platform, but was prevented by the parliamentary – guard from solieving his purpose.

Several Opposition Deputies thereupon hastened to his assistance, and a scuffle ensued, in which the Presidential- platform was smashed to pieces and the debris thrown on to the benches of the Deputies. The table of the House was overturned and the Codes of Law lying on it were torn to atoms. With missiles and cudgels formed out of the pieces the par- liamentary guard were chased out of the House. The Ministerial table and the 137 chairs were smashed and the desks torn down. The House presented a picture of wreck and ruin. The members of the Opposition took possession of the place where the platform had stood. No mem- ber of the Liberal Party was to be seen in the House.

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charte which has been found to be 4 feat 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 8 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.

Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
