courage and aptitude for hard work that marked him out for success when he was a very young man indeed. And with these qualities he combined a never-grudging. generosity and kindness of spirit that endeared him to all, and just that
touch of the devil-may-care that al-
ways commands love when the heart ia in the right place. He knew the ups and downs of life, and, unfortunately, it would seem, the downs have been too
heavy for his advancing years, and he re-
solved, with characteristic and sudden determination, once and for all to lay aside the cares which were outweighing the quieter moments of life, and by so doing Shanghai has lost a sincerely loved and respected friend.
Port Arthur has fallen and with the announesment I see the newsboys racing and tearing down the narrow ways of Fleet Street charging and obtaining what they like for their papers, but how different it is in Shanghai, close upon the seat of the war. The papers, it is true, have managed. to fill up space with big type, which they profoundly hope will make amends

THE HIGHEST BRIDGE IN THE
WORLD.
The celebrated "Capo to Cairo' railway of Cecil Rhodes which still exists chiefly on paper has as one of its principal links tho Rhodesian Railway, which is to extend from the South African railway system into the heart of Contral Africa. This is actually under construction and has now reached the great Zambesi river, 1,643 miles from Cape Town, which stream is to be crossed by n steel arch bridge just below the Victoria Falls. Says Engineering News, in a brief description of the bridge:
The width of tho river above and at the falls is about a mile; but the falls are form ed.
by a great rent or fissure, 250 to 400 feat wide and 400 feet deep, which extends entirely across the riverbed. Through the downstream face of this pit opens a narrow which extends in a zigzag er urso for gorge, a length of some 40 miles; beyond this the channel again widens, The bridge will have a main span of 500 feet, composed of steel arch trusses, resembling the two Niagara River bridges. Thero will also be two parallel chord deck truss spans of 871 -feet, extending from the ends of the main
span to the abutments. The bridge will be 30 feet wide, sufficient for a double track. The mail loyel will be 420 feet above low- water level, or 380 feet above high water, making this the highest bridge in the world.
Drawings and photographs of this bridge and its surroundings form a striking exhibit in the Transportation Buildingat the St. Louis Exhibition...... The material. is conveyed across the gorgo by a Brothers' electric balanced cableway of 870 feet span.
The electric cableway is also being uned for carrying over material for the extension of the line 100 miles north from the Victo- ria Falls to Kalomo, the capital of North- western Rhodesia. This extension will do.
a great deal to facilitate the transport diffi- culties which at present hinder the develop. ment of the great Northern copper-fields.
Already plans have been made to develop the water-power of the falls. It is estimat- ed that when the river is in flood the volume of water is about double that at Niagara, and represents about 35,000,000 horse- power. The electrical power would be delivered tò long-distance transmission
lines, and distributed to the copper, gold, and coal fields which are already being opened up.'
Galle Chamber of Commerce.
Owing to the wreck of the Secundra at Galle, Ceylon, a Chamber of Commerco has been formed to enable those concerned in the trade of the port to take concerted aution for their interests.
The first meet-. ing was held on December 13, when this unfortunate wreck and matters connected with the harbour engaged attention. first Chairman of the Chamber is Mr Chas. P. Hayley and Mr. B. W. Loofe is Secretary,
A KINDLY PUBLIC OFFICER. Some months ago a letter from Rai Maya Des, R.B., Magistrate of the First Class and Manager of the Mamdote Estate in the Ferozepore District, Panjab, was received in London, by the proprietors of Mother Seigel's Syrup, in which the writer ordered some of the Syrup to be sent to him at Ferozepore, and mentioned that a hoy in the camp bad band radically cured of disorders by using the Syrup. The English firm wrote to Mr Rui Maa Das, asking for some further information, and these are the lotters he sent in reply.

Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter -dated London, 26th July, 1904, I have the plos- sure to enclose a certificate from the father of the boy who was completely cured, as it came under my personal observation; therefore I can testify with confidence that the accompany- ing certificate is a geruiue nue, It is written
in the Hindustani language, and I have trans- lated it for you and it speaks for itself.
I have since been recommending this won- derful Syrup to people far and near, for I remain often out in enmp. I always travel with a bottle of the Syrup in my box and hare already used 9 bottles out of the dozen I bought from you in May last. Both my wife and I (and we have 14 children) nse it freely when any one of us is out of sorts, and it acts like a charm. My wife has been suffering from a wheezing con h and catching breath for years together, and she thought it was asthma, hat I thought it was the liver, and eo gave her a few bottles, and now she is as well as she can be, going easily up and down the staire-for- merly it was a real trial for her to go up a single step.
Please send me this time another dozen or even two dozen, if there is any saving in it. Thanking yon in anticipation and also for your pas: kindness in complying with my request so promptly, I remain, dear Sire, Yours faish- fally,

After many years of illness a friend | Hongay Jun. 10, Coal. BUTTERFIELD & C. Fred: Laeisz... recommended me to try Dr William's pink pills. The first bottle certainly made me botter, and after the second bottle there was marked improvement.' I felt stronger,. and was less casily tired. Colour com monced to come into my face- sure siga that the pills were making new blood-and my friends noticed the change for the bet- ter. I continued the course and I cannot remember when I was so healthy before. I work wel', ent wull, and sleep well'
The speaker was Mrs Thorne, 106 St. Mark's road, Bri-tol. England. Dr Williams' pink pills cured her because they made now blood. Whatever diseases arise from too little blood, or blood that lacks richness and purity, they can cure just 36 Karely as food cures hunger. The genuine pills always bear Dr Willians' name, and substitutos are useless and fraudulent. De Williams' medicine co., Holborn Viaduct, London, England, will send a bottle post- free for two shillings and nineponce to any address. It is by making new blood that they curo anemia, bile, consumption, indigestion, St. Vitus' danco: it is by mak- ing pure blood that they cure rheumatism, kidney disease, eczema and all skin' troubles. They give strength to everyone, especially to women, who know why they need new bloed more often than their hushands and brothers.
