The third-class, or tsuji-guruma, who are
stationed at street corners, are the freest of all as regards their daily life, but, are probably the poorest. The majority rent their vehicle from some jinrikisha bouse, and
pay four to eight-sen per diem for the hire. The street jinrikishamen's earnings- are on an average about twenty-five to thirty sen, equivalent to a little more than one shilling. He has a street stand, where: he, must wait for his fares; but though these are free to all like our own cabstands, evory newcomer finds he must ingratiate himself with those before him by a amail. present to commemorate his entrance into their company. At busy stands the num- bers are always full, and etrangers are not accepted on any terme expect by purchas- ing the goodwill of a stand vacated by a retizing member. When the stands are located in the station enclosure, or on the ground belonging to the railway the men are even more exclusive.

regulations, it may be mentioned, not only, govern the conduct of the men themselves, bat give directions for the construction and colour of the jiorikisha, together with its appurtenances, and stipulate what dress the men shall generally wear, in addition to style and colour of the waterproof donned in wet weather. The rale of the road is also given minutely. Keep to the left holds good in Japan, though there is an exooption when troops, commissariat, etc., are in sight, for the right side must then bo. taken. An unoccupied conveyance must yield to one occupied, and when it is desired to overtake another rikisha travelling in the same direction, that in- tention must be expressed loudly, so that the one in front may swerve to the right. Mail carts an! fire-engines, of course, to- 'gether with water drays and funeral proces- sians, have precedence over other vehicles, with which must move out of the way alacrity. The regulations of the police are seconded to a great extent by the efforts of the guilds, one of which exists in each district, or ward, of the large cities, to which every tsuji-guruma must belong. In Tokio there are about 50,000 jinrikishas, according to the number of urban districts, so that every guild manager; who is choosen by the members has charge of over 3 500 wheelers, a task which is by no means light, and compares with the secretaryship of a trades union in this country, though it must be admitted that the duties are decidedly more onerous.-Globe.
REMARKABLE FATALITIES FROM DEER HUNTING,
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 30.-Twenty-nine dead, fifteen seriously injured. This is the record of the deorhunting season, which began November 11th and closed to-day in Wisconsin. Each man or boy killed or hurt.was mistaken for a deer. For some reason never explained the coats worn were of buff colour as a rule. Some hunters woro coloured caps. Consequently even experienced men have difficulty in distin- guishing fellow hunters from game at a distance or in thick woods, and a bullet oftene finds a resting-place in human flesh. A movement is now on foot to stop dear shooting in Wiscousin, and a bill to that effect will go to the Legislature this winter. It is estimated that 4,0:0 deer were killed in twenty days~ one third less than the number a year ago.
A SUBMARINE IN A STORM.
NEW LONDON (Conn.), Nov 29.-Sealed fast in the US. submarine-boat Plunger, two seamen went through & terrifying ex- perience last night in a gale on the sound, Twice the Plunger was thrown up on the. beach and in the battering of the vessel at sea and on shore the two seamen wore hurled. with stunning force against the steel sides of their prison. When the storm had abated enough to permit an in- spection of the submarine-boat the sailors were found unconscious on the floor. They were taken to the hospital here. Both men are expected to recover.
The Plunger was in tow of the torpedo. boat Tingey whon caught in a terrific gale. The tow-line snapped and the two vessels. separated. The Phunger was at the mercy of the waves. The Tingey, although swept by vast waves, made a heroic effort to re- lieve the submarine. A tow-line was made fast again, only to be snapped. All night the torpedo boat worked to aid the Plunger, which was now resting firmly on the beach. Finally the submarine was pulled off at daylight and towed to shelter. The Ma- chinery in the submarino-bost was badly strained and probably ruined.

TIMELY SUGGESTION.—This is the season of the year when the pru dent and careful housewife replenishes her supply of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It is certain to be needed before the winter is over, and results are much more prompt and satisfactory when it is kept at hand and given as soon as the cold is contracted and before it has become settled in the system. In almost every instance a sovere cold may be warded off by taking this remedy freely as soon as the first indication of the cold appears. There is no danger in giving it to children for it contains no harm. fal substance. It is pleasant to take-both adults and children like it. Buy it and you will get the best. It always cures. The audience room will now seat from fourteen to fifteen hundred persons, and other portions of the building are better adapted to the growing work of the hospital.
The hospital report will show how in recent years the Chinese have by special subscrip- tions contributed largely to the extension and equipment of the hospital plant. We gratefully recognize the aid they have thus rendered, marking as it does, a genuine interest whore formerly there may have been indifference or even hostility.
The construction of a Bund fifty two foot wido along the river front has necessitated the extension and change of our boundary line to a moderate extent, but this improve- thent more than compensates for the expense involved.

The special lines of advancement are shown by the equipment and opening of the Society's Medical College, and the enlar- ging of evangelistic work which has requir ed the rebuilding on a larger scale of the hospital, church known as the Preston Memorial Chapel, the former building hav. ing become quite too small for the large audiences which attend. The enlargment of this building, which, with furnishing, has cost six thousand, dollars has been largely the result of an effort on the part of the mem- bers of the Second Presbyterian Church, who contributes forty-five hundred dollars toward this work. The church is entirely self-supporting and employe evangelistic workers on its own account..

Within the past year the hospital pre- mises have been enlarged by the opportune purchase of six Chinese dwelling houses adjoining the East side of the hospital pre. mises, for the sum of forty-three hundred dollars, While these premises are now being utilized, it is hoped that funds will seon be forthcoming to erect a building suitable for students dormitories.
The evangelistic work in connection with the hospital has continued to be a promin- out feature. Chapel preaching, teaching in the wards and in the two schools, and the various services held for those who are in the hospital have yielded good results.
The faithful service of our Chinese as- sistants is worthy of mention. Without them it would hardly by possible to meet the demands of the hospital work, and wa are grateful for the aid they render.
The Medical College is now being con- ducted under the efficient management of Dr Anton Anderston. The course of didactic and clinical teaching extends over a period of four years and covers the principal bran- obes in Medicine and Surgery. Out of a the broken glass in one of the prisoner's total corollment of fifteen students, twelve are in regular attendance; and it is expect. pockets. PHYSICIANS. AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Lazatine being non-irrit- able will be found a great boon, to ladies especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Larstine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messrs A. S. WATSON & Co.
