TUBERCULOSIS IN HUMAN

BEINGS,

BERLIN, November 26.

The Imperial Commission appointed the Government to investigate the relations. between bovine and human tuberculosis mbt yesterday. Dr Weber, one of the most eminent members of the Commission, re- ported that investigations hitherto made "showed bovine and human tuberculosis bacilll to be absolutely different biologi- cally, and one never develops changes into the other. The examination of fifty-six persons who died of tuberculosis showed the

presence of human bacilli only in fifty. There was bovine bacilli, however in six. three of which were young children, Tho surmise is permissible that the latter receiv ed the bacillus from the milk of diseased cows. Two other osses which Dr Weber regards as most important was where the

corpses showed bovine bacilli in the glands and human bacilli also on other portions of the body. “They were distinct cases of double infection.

The Commission reached the conclusion that tuberculosis in human beings was caus- ed by human bacillus, but urges careful usə-

of all prescribed measures to prevent infoo tion with bovine bacillus.

a mean strength of 25,376 troops were on foreign service during the year, only 620 deaths occurred from all causes in the on- tire Army-American and native troops- equal to a rate of 9.30 per thousand, as compared with 15.49 for the previous year.

Projects-for-the defence of thirty-one localities in the United States have been prepared and approved, and actual con- struction under these approved projects has so far advanced that twenty-five of the principal harbours now have mounted in fortifications and ready for use heavy guns

"Since the inauguration of the present system of coast defence the total appro- priations made by Congress for carrying out the work aggregate in round numbers $110,000,000, and it is estimated that it will take $65,000,000 more to complete the work.'

ATTER THE WAR.

[BY PROFESSOR E. HI. PARKER.] II

THERE is nothing in the British Press to show that hostility against Russia has increased since the war broke out: on the contrary, it would seem that admiration for her bravery under great difficulties has secured for her as much of our sympathy as is. compatible with the just expectations of our "allics. To overcome this the Rob- inson Piano Company installed a piano factory at Wanchal, where all the materials used in the production of the instrument are well accustomed to the climate before they are put together, thus surmounting the main obstacle in the way of introducing an instrument of stability into the Colony.

The factory covers a considerable area of ground, the floor area being 11,500 Aquare foot, The works are under the supervision of Mr S. Those who seek to close these places are encouraged by the native press, which urges that should the first attempt to secure a pro- mise from the mandarins fail, a second and even a third should be made.
