To trace once more the natural history of the Divina Commedia is a great service to Dante res- ders and intending readers. Dante's rela tion to his times and to that Poem which shows how all things are transfigured ex- cept Love, also the relation of the Poem to De Monarchia is lucidly expounded with a glowing enthusiasm which sends us back

pro-
This is not a novel that attempts to solve: half the problems of the Universe for the moderate sum of six shillings. It is a charming idyll of life in a New England country village. The Master, a German, who has left his country and has with him a sister as housekeeper, old Aunt Pearce, s lovable old dame of the old school who may be forgiven for her belief in her own eminence; a niece, who has beco adopted and educated in the old style, but really educat ed, and a young man who essays to excel in the violin under the tuition of the Master,-- are the principal characters. The chords of love are disgordant at first, and it is the business of the book to show that only through pain and tears and self-sacrifice do the best gifts of life come to men and No one can read this book with-

same corridor, and on one occasion, after a champagne supper, he was seen by the friend of her father kissing her. She was horrified that the man should kiss her, but he was about to lend her money to recover that which bad been lost and she could not resist him, Later she sinned more, unwillingly, and upon the day her husband arrived ran away with Diretot to Faris. How he was followed by
her husband and the results are best told'
by the author, and there are fine descrio tive passages in the story as it relates Courtney's feelings and acte when he knows that his wife bears a child to Diderot. Courtney feels he must kill either himself or the child, He decides that he will go, and he actually swims out to sea with the object of allowing himself to drown when the manhood in him persuades him to go back. He arrived home to find his house on fire. The struggle he has with himself and his wife as to the fate of the child which has been left in the burning build. ing, and the incidents that ensue, must be read to be appreciated. The story is thril lingly told, and one cannot help putting the book down with the feeling that after all it is best, if one has to fight for his own, to fight honourably and fearlessly. The story is worth reading. The book is very attractively got up, and is illustrated with several attractive coloured pictures.

Chinese labour to the mining industry in the Transvaal, the proposal was treated from the first as highly content- ious and dire were the prophecies of its opponents. Still, though it may be too soon to pronounce definitely, the ovil results anticipated have not occurred, and South Africa seems hitherto to have gained by the influx. Philanth ropists will see in the success of the experiment a step towards the breaking down of national prejudices and the recognition of the real solidarity of the human race.
Throughout the world, if we leave the disastrous war out of our preview for a moment, we see little change. Everything is as in 1903, only the lines are shaded and emphasized. The United States of North America have confirmed Mr Roosevelt in power, and thereby strengthened the various policies with which his name is associated. German Emperor keeps adding to his fleet and, with equal strenuousness, if less of public display, strengthens the position of his empire commercially. RAILWAY ENTERPRISE IN

Schemes in the Air.
(From Our Correspondent).
AMOY, Dec. 28, A few days ago a local Chinese newe- paper called the Pukien Daily News had references to several contemplated railways in this province.
Rumours have been plentiful for some years past as to a railway from Amoy to Foodbow, and another from here to join the railway now being built from Swatow to Chow Chow Fu. It would really seem as if one or both of these schemes have: been pushed a stage further on, since it is now said that several Chinamen have gone to Peking to get the permission of the" Chinese Government,
In regard to a third scheme to open up: the coal mines in the North River and An Khoe regions, although this is referred to, it is to be feared that the difficulties caus. ed by the mountainous character of the country will prevent its materialization was made downstairs to the Theatre, where quite so soon as the others. the Magic tree was glory, and ere

Nothing but the building of these TAR- ious railways will enable the trade of Amoy to recover ita former prosperity, for at pre- Bout it is far from elastið and remunerative, The opening of coal and izon mines might, do something to stem the gigantic stream of emigration that has been depleting the population of the southern half of this pro- vince for many decades, and actually c808- ng large tracts of land up country to go out of cultivation altogether.
It is needless to say that he received à rousing welcome from the children, and, mdeed, all who were present felt quite young again, and wished they were really children once more, especially us he pro- ceeded to distribute his precious and timely care

The Pleasures of Yachting... On Saturday last a party of yachtsmen took advantage of the New Year's holidays to set out for Canton in well kno^n yacht the La Vigale. A start was made at 1.30 p.m. and Chek Wat was reached that night with a very light wind blowing, and starting again at 1.30 on Sunday morning a fast run was made to Blake light by the aid of a good fresh wind. Here the breeze fell completely, and the yacht was becalmed for about twelve hours. After this drifting was the only means of progress and Canton was reached at noon on Monday and the anchor dropped off the Shameen. The yachtsmen went ashore and having chaired through the city started back for Hongkong on Tuesday, at 10.45 a.m. this time, as there was still no wind, in tow of a launch. In that manner they reached Whampoa and got into the harbour at 1.15 this morning. The trip throughout was a huge drift the anchor being put down when the tide did not serve, and was drifting recommenced when it was in the right direction, slow was the progress after the launch was dropped coming down that at one point some of the party were able to go ashore shooting and regain the yacht in the dingy Though the La Cigale draws & feet 6 inches she did not touch bottom anywhere in the river, which says something for the naviga-

LAXATINE
THE NEW IDEAL PURGATIVE.
FOR ALL LIVER, KIDNEY AND HEMORRHOID TROUBLES.
RECOMMENDED BY THE WORLDS' FINEST PHYSICIANS.
AXATINE is the mildest aperient known. It is pleasant in taste, not drastic but certain in action and even in large doses is harmless. Laxatine being non-irrit. able will be found a great boon, to ladios especially, and in cases where the kidneys are irritable or diseased. Laxatine is strongly recommended by the Continental Authorities and is being largely used in the London hospitals. Messra A. WATSON & Co. LD., have been appointed the Hongkong Agents for this preparation.
