TUNNELLING THE HUDSON. RIVER

Referring to the tunnels under the Hud- son River, between New York and Jersey Olty, Engineering says that the operations now in progross are, the construction of a tunnel which is to run paralled to the one which was completed last March, after hart ing been commenced thisty, years ago, and abandoned owing to engineering difficulties. These two tunnela will be used for local traffic only; the cars will be similar to those used on the elevated railways of New York. The

work is being carried on by means of a shield, compressed air is used, y the pressure being 26 lb., to the square inch. The rate of progress is 50 ft, por day of 24 hours, the remarkable speed of construction being due to the fact that the shiold can be forced bodily through the bed of the river without

it being made sufficiently strong for the purpose. One thousand five hundred feet. of the new tonnel bad been completed, and for this length it was open to the inspection of visitors.

The

construction of thess tunnels cannot fail to have a great and beneficial influence on the Encial and economic conditions of New York, and will hasten the development of the New Jemey side. Whether it will lead to the reclams tion of the vast areas of swampy land across the river remains to be seep, but that it should have that effect is much to be dosired.

-FAMILY OF A MISSIONARY POISONED,

News of a horrible poisoning case comer from Burhanpur, in the Nimar district of the Central Provinces, India. Though large native town, Burhanpur has no resident European pficials at the only Europoins there are a few missionaries, It

the household of one of theso, Dr. Benjamin, of the American Episcopalian Mission, that the tragedy occurred. Is appears that on December 1 this gentleman was away visiting au outlying village, when news was brought him that his family had been seized with sudden illness. He returned to find his wife and one boy dead, and his two other sons in a critical atate. They had been

seized with violent illness immediately after taking their morning tes, and, no skilled help being available, apparently the unfortunate lady and her child had expired, in great agony. The cook, who had prepared the meal, on boe ing arrested, confessed he had mixed arsenic with the tea, but alleges he was induced to do so by one of the Mission employés, nativo who assisted Dr Benjamin as school- master and compounder, This

man was said to have been reprimanded by Dr Benjamin, and the idea is that this rankled in his mind.

and induced him to contrive the crime, choosing a time when no help was likely to

be forthcoming for the innocent victims. He is in the hands of the police so that the whole truth will probably come out in due

course.

THE LATE MARSHAL VON BOON.

Berlin, Oct. 24-In the presence of the Emperor and Empress, the Crown Prince and a large assembly of invited

Bueats, a statue of Field-Marshal Count von Boon the great Prussian War Minister, was un- 797 veiled to-day in the Koulgsplatz. The pro- ceedings were opened by an address delivered by the present Minister of Wara - General von Einem, in which the work of Von Boon in organising the Prussian and German a

army on its modern basis

ry on traced in some detail, and the memorable words of Emperor William I., uttered im- mediately after Sedan, were recalled

You, War Minister von Boon, sharpened our sword; you, General von Moltke, wielded it; and you, Count von

labour remunerative; all have not the capacity to labour. Some there are who have fallen behind, or whose infirmities or even more pitiable, their faults--have stranded in shoals, or misled into backwaters of the stream of life. They deserve our assistance, and

in the cases where they do not deserve it, they have even a higher claim upon us, for Mercy is twice blessed; it blesseth him that gives and him that takes. The noblest recognition that the toiler can give to Christmas is to give of the fruit of his toil to those who can- not toil, either through "inability or, lack of opportunity, without scrutinis- ing their claim too narrowly. There is something of the virtue which Aristotle styled Magnificence in a lavish bestowal of goodwill at this season.

CANTON, December 21.`

It would appear as if Canton is soon to be put into possession of another large, Toumy, and well equipped hospital. There will then be three under the direction of foreigners, and, in addition, an extensive block of buildings under the absolute con- trol of the Chinese, who, if rumour bo re- liable, have combined some aspects of Western healing with their own effeto system.

This now hospital owes its existence to the munificence of the French gentleman, Mr P.. Coumier, who, I believe, was at one time Governor of Annam.
