This system for a double reason may now be mid to have reached maturity. It is just 21 years old, for it was in November, 1883 when the railway managers of the United States and Canada divided the enti nent through which their lines run into five zones, in which the times, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 hours slow on Greenwich were respectively used. Since that date. a similar plan has been adopted in almost all other countries, so that now the system encircles the globe and may be considered practically complete. Major Andre's Monument.
The monument to Major Andre, the English officer who was hanged by the Americans as a spy in 1780, has been sold for six dollars thirty-eight cents. The sale took place in satisfaction of arrears of tax 8 which had remained unpaid since the death of Mr Cyrus Field, the cable promoter, who failed to make permanent provision for the monument, which he erected on the site of the officer's execution.

Counse. From starting line South of Flagship, round mark bost cae mile North of Kyu-i-chau (starboard) and finish at starting line.
The entries wore :- Alexandra (owner, F. Oswald Reynolds,) handicap, 20m.; Brimhilde (A. H _Ough), 20m; Hridze (G. H. Potts), 10m. Iona (F. R. Smith), 18m 20.; La Cigale (E. M. Hazel.nd), Om. Rita (R. H. King), 5m.
The day was an ideal sailing day, there being plenty of wind coming from the East, which sent the boats round the course at a fine pace. The La Cigale was the first boat across the starting line, followed by Haides and Brynhilde, with Petu, Tong and Alexandru strung out behind. The start was rather straggling, but when the yachts were fairly going, they looked very well. The Haidee made up on La Cigale on the run down, but the Intter rounded the
mark first, with the other hosts in the order of starting. Turning to windward the Haide showed out excellenthy and shot Past La Cigale as though the latter was standing stil. The Brynhilde was moving along vory well, and reduced the lead hold by La Cigale somo- what. The intter crossed the lines head of the Brimhilde, but did not awo her time allowance, and the Brynhilde ws awarded second place. The illu started with a reef in her mil, but when aff Stonc cutter's Island she unfurled it, as the wind began to drop. The Alexandr did not

There was a strong North Westerly set at the time which made navigation difficult and carried the steamer 31 miles out of her course in twelve hours,
The site of the Shrewsbury's wrock is about a mile distant from that of the Buron Gordon. She ran well on to the rocks and it at once became evident that her bottom was badly damaged. Notwith on board for 17 days without being able standing this, however, all hands remained to attract any passing steamer although one was signalled. They wore about to take to the boats when the Rosario arrived and saved them 'from what almost certainly would have been a rough exper- ience.
!
The Rosario get close in to the wreck and found that there was deep water all round her. At this time the steamer's No 1 and No 2 holds were practically full of water and No 4 was making water rapidly, while in the engine room and stoke hole the water was also coming in freely. She was lying in about 22 feet of water forward, and 9 feet aft, and had every appearance of breaking amidships, so that there seems to be very little hope of getting her off, particularly so, owing to the deep water by which she is surrounded, she would, if towed off, pro- bably fill and sink before anything could be done to save her,
The rescued crew consisted of 48 all told, eight Europeans and 42 Indians, Captain H. Bropby being in charge.
The Shrewsbury's cargo consisted of about 5,000 tons of Welsh steam coal. She was a stool screw stemmer of 3223 tons register, and was built at Glasgow by Messrs W. Hamilton and Co. Her owners were Messrs Galbraith, Pembroke and Company, of London, and local agents Messrs Melchera and Company.
