of crowds and speciaales and processions of late years, I have seen them allin London, the Jubilees, Que Victoria's funeral, the military triumphs, and the Coronation, They were magnificent exhibitions of pomp and pride and power, but none of them to my BYOB WAS HD IMDINARITA As the scene here
to-day. I do not wish to exaggerate, and to some eyes it may have appered dull and uninteresting. There was no pomp, no colour, no glitter, but there was a pathos, solemnity, and a significance beyond words. I anticipated a great demonstration and vast concourse of people, but the reality far surpassed my expectations. It was quite impossible to
gauge their number because they were
tended, all along the road travelled by the procession.
Thanks to the courtesy of the Mayor,
who kindly offered me a sest in his carriage, I saw the whole from beginning to end, which would otherwise have been impos sible. The interest to-day did not lie in 10n 18 on the other the pro mentioned but in the people looking on. The procession was of the simplest, it was headed by the Chief Constable, Major Mal colm, on horseback, then came the bands of the Buffaloes Friendly Society, to which the decused. aptain Smith belong

ancé I have never seen in ́s crowd before.
There
thousands of the roughest working men there for hours, but I naw none of them even smoking, I saw no one talking and laughing, but scores of women crying. There was bardly more sign of curiosity than of fippancy in their faces, In point of fact, there was nothing for them to see.
They had come to honour the dead, and never were dead more truly honoured. To see the placs all so grave and still along that extended line produced an indescribable impression. No man can laugh it the dead, but dead who can move a multitude in this way are few indeed, and behind the people of Hull one falt the nation was standing, for these are England's dead.
As the cemetery was approached the Out- crowd grew more and more dense,
side the gates the band and the others on foot stopped to let the hearses and carriages gaby. The band had been playing the 'Dead
·March,' Handel's great "Dead March,' the most majestio because the simplest of all dead marches, along the route, and it stood here playing still. The coffin passed slowly on between the dense and silent rows of spectators. It was infinitely moving. I saw the tears come into the eyes of many s man, The sun was getting low by this time and shone on the scene with the waning light of an autumn day dying in mist. The coffins were placed in the chapel, the mour- merk filing in, and Captain White, a veteran fisherman, now of the fishermen's mission, read the burial service according to Non- conformist usage. The coffins were then brne to the two graves and the service was completed. Captain Smith leaves a widow and four sons, three of whom are little boys. William Leggett leaves a mother and sister.
