magnates. In an extremely modern form this very question reappeared only the other day when a deputation wished to wait the Lord Chancellor for the purpose upon

of objecting to the non-appointment Peace, of working-man Justices. The in B certain Commission of the

selcation of men of a lower social grade would have been impossible in our early history, unl so they had been turned into an official bureaucracy, paid and dependent on the Kings as the police func tionaries wero in France. The chief 2071 offenders in those days were those who claimed to exercise independent jurisdiction themselves; and the King's purpose was to break up their power. It would have been. useless to put in the Commission meu of no Atanding. Justicos were paid for their servibes at first, but it was early enacted should take wages. The Commission-be- came a matter of honour. Lawyers and the smaller gentry tended to be excluded, and county government to bed consolidated in the hands of richer landed proprietors."

The engines and boilers were made in the same yard, the cylinders being 21in. 33in. and 5bin., by 36in, stroke, and, with steam at 180lbs, pressure, wore expected to drive the vessel I knots per hour. GENERAL NEWS,

New Battleships.

The Admiralty have placed the con- tracts for two battleships of the Lord Nelson class, one with Beardinore and Co., Clyde, and the other with Palmer and Co., Jarrow. Had the two lowest tenders been accepted both vessels would have been built on the Clyde. However, the Government wished to distribute the work. The battleships will be the most powerful yet designed, and will be the highest conception of science as applied to dost uctive power. They will be 410 feet long by 73 ft. 0 in., and 650 tops burdon, while the speed will be 18 knots. The cost of each input at practically £1,8 0,01 sterling. Many of the x-inch guns will be replaced by 12-inch guns, the experience in th Russlapanese war hav- ing led to the change in gun power. Tho ve-sole will be ready for commisson in three yours.

THE JOYFULNESS OF FOLLY. What a pleasant thing is folly! Only those who know very little, or (better still) nothing at all, appear entirely happy For whereas a fool sincerely believes that he knows everything, a wise man is by constant proofs reminded that he knows very little. But stay! There is some- thing wrong here. This philosophy won't do. Is ignorance, after all, really hoppiness? Trne, a very old proverb assures us that 'tis folly to be wise," but, like most proverbs, we suspect that this one must not be taken too literally. A car- lain miser when young buried a hoard of gold in a secret place, intending to dig it up for use when he grew old; but his miserly spirit pre- vented him from ever believing that he was af- ficently old to need it, though he lived to a great age. As a matter of fad, the miser was observ. ed boring bis gold by man who ang it up and made off with it the very next day; but the miser never knew this, Here, now, was a cas of ignorance being blits. 16 From a search into the records of the Colony it appears that the first maiden Bession of which there is any record was held on August 18, 1873, when the Chief Justice, Mr Smale, was informed by the Sheriff (Mr Lister) that there were no cases for trial. On January, 1887, the same Judge, then Sir J. Smale, again presided at a maiden session, and was presented with the traditional pair of white gloves by Mr M. 8. Tonnachy and on February, 18, 1891, Chief Justice Goodman presided at the third maiden session. In January of the next year, Chief Justice Fielding Clarke presided, and another clean bill was record ed, and in September, 1898, Chief Justice Carrington presided, at the last before the present occasion.

England, I had a severe attack of in- Suenza, and from then till quite recently I suffered from the after-effects. Sometimes I got better for a day or two, but I soon became worse again. The neighbours all regarded me as doomed.

This went on for years, and six months ago I was so ill that I had to give up housework altogether and got a girl in to do it for me. I could not walk to the foot of the garden. Every few steps I had to stop torget my breath."

Mrs Roper's case is only too common- Ruined digestion had shattered her norves and starved her veins of blood. We see here all the signs of anaumia, and (as her story proceeds) wo shall also see that as soon as her blood supply was built up she began to grow better.

At last, Mrs Roper continued, 'I h‹d to take to my bed. I was in despair, and never expected to rise again. While in this state I said to my girl: 'I wonder if Dr Williams' Pink Pilla for Pale People would do me any good. Some people seem to think well of them.' At any rate, I de termind to try."

Although Mrs Roper apparently did not know the real cause of her trouble, she had hit upon the right remedy. Dr Williams Pink Pills make new blood: that is the secret of their cures. the effect was noticed :-

Observe how quickly

I had be in bed three weeks then,' said Mrs Roper. But I am telling you the barest truth when i say that I felt & change for the better after a couple of doses of the pilla. On the second day I got out of bed, and I can assure you I astonished the neighbours. The improvement was atendy and rapid. I took the pills three times a day for a month, and then I drop- pod the dose to a dose in the morning and at tea-time. It is over ten years since I felt so well as I do now, I have sent the

girl away and do all my own work now. Ifer Bombay, Mr Masood Ahmed, Rev. and attribute my really wonderful care entire ly to Dr Williams' Pink Pills.'

'You,' remarked her husband, who camo in at this moment, they have done wonders for her and for me, too. Three years ago I had a bad attack of lumbago in the back. I took the pills after my wife's experience, and now I am as right as can

be.'

In both cases the cure was the same. The new blood did it. That is the secret of the thousands of curos effected by Dr Williams' Pink Pills. Whatover diseases arise from too little blood, or blood that lacks richness and purity, they can cure, just as surely as food cures hunger. Blood is the food of the body: Dr Williams' Pink Pills are the food of the blood. The genuine pills always bear Dr Williams name, and substitutes are useless and fraudulent. Dr Williams' Medicine Com- pany, Holborn Viaduct, London, will send a bottle post free for 2a. 9d. to any address. It is by making new blood that they cure anemia, bile, consumption, indigestion, St Vitus' dance it is by making pure blood that they cure rheumatism, kidney disease,

eczema, and all skin troubles. They im- prove the appetite almost from the first dose, and they give strength to everyone. especially to women, who know why they need new blood more often than their hus- bands and brothers,
