There is one recorded case in which the daily dose of a victim of "gingeriem" was incrmed from ten drops to a pint in the course of three years. Though the habit is more practised a the United States than in Eaglend, there are numbers of chemists in London who ad- mit that they have regular customers for the pungent essence, who buy comparatively large quantities yeek. Before this detach- ment arrived, however, the people had asked to be pardoned for their conduct and once more settled down peacefully. The affair has thus blown over, but has sorved to show there are disturbing elements at work below the surface in Manipur. There can be no thought now of removing the regular troops from the State.

A Napoleonic Relic of Waterloo.
The Institut de France had to decide recently whether it would accept, for the Condé Museum, at Chantilly, a legacy by the late M. Gérome, in the form of the hat; which Napoleon wore on the day of the battle of Waterloo. This relic formerly be longed to the family of one of the great dignitaries of the First Empire, and was bought by Gérome, some twenty years ago: for six hundred and eighty pounds. It was accompanied by many certificates of gen- nineness, and the great artist was vory proud of it, According to popular report, he one day told the Duc d'Aumale that he intended to bequeath the hat to the Condé Museum. Some member of the Inst think that the hat of the executioner of the Duc d'Enghien should not be treasured by the Condé Museum, but would be more appropriate to the Army Museum.

The first was in reference to a letter which it had been argued showed that the owners agents understood what the ship was being chartered for. At this time the captain of the steamer was at Sai- gon and first knew about the charter on February 17, when both parties clearly knew, and intended, that the steamer was to carry the clean of engo over which the dispate subsequently arose. As proposi. tion of law, regarding the word contraband as applied to provisions, he submitted that the ordinary and accepted meaning 'pro- visions destined for warlike purposes' was the correct one. That being so the defend. ants could not vary their written contract by showing that they intended something special and unusual. He believed that was a sound proposition of law. He had left this point until the last because he did not wish to rely on a technicality. As a matter of law it was not permissable to call evidence to vary the ordinary meaning of the terms of a written contract, It had been argued that unless the view of contraband taken by the owners' agents, clause 37 of International law had no significance. He submitted that this was not so; apart from clause 37 the ownere would be obliged to carry any contraband unless there was immediate danger of capture by the Russian cruisers,
His Lordship said that he would reserve his answer to the questions submitted by the Arbitrator for farther consideration. The Court was adjoumed until Monday at 11 o'clock.
THE HONGKONG ODD VOLUMES SOCIETY.
The attendance was but small when the match opened, but as the morning advanced the crowd grew. All round the ground on the inside small groupe began to assemble, increasing in size as time went on, until by tiffin time the ground prosented quite a creditable appearance. The inembers' stand was well-filled and one or two of the smaller stands began to take on a pretty aspect as they became occupied. The st.. tendance of ladies was greater than at the same time on the previous day, despite the dull day. In preparation for this evening's concert Chinese lanterns were strung round the Cricket Ground and in front of the pavilion at the South Eastern corner of the Ground. Outside, in rows two or three deep, were the usual coolies, and the lines of uncovered heads and dark faces were enlivened by an occasional straw hat.
At 10.50 the two not-out men took the'r places at the wickets and Lanning com- menced to bowl to Dixon. A drive to the on gavo a single to Dixon, then four byes were added. Airy blocked for the rest of the over and Potter took up the bowling at the opposits crease. He served out a maiden, and Airy then mado a single by a cut, which brought the first century up. Through the kindness of Me F. B. L. Bowley (Secretary to the City Hall Com mittee), the City Hall Librarian's Room is, as heretofore, at the Olub's disposal. In the past it has been sustomary to hold meetings on Wednesday evenings, but do ring the ensuing season it is hoped that it will be possible to arrange more frequent gatherings. It is proposed to arrange a Handicap Tournament for which prizes will be awarded.
With a view to stimulating interest in Chess, the Committee is endeavouring to arrange matches with members of various other Clubs in the Colony, at Canton, and
at Macao.
A sealed handicap tournament was held ja the beginning of the year, the winner being Mr A. Raymond. Messra H. E. Pollock, K. C., and P: W. Sergeant also gave exhibitions of simultaneous chess play. They were, on occaslons, opposed to five, six and seven other Club Membere simul taneously.

Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled, at the Nautical. Almanso Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zaro of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charta which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean soa level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dook, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
November 13th to 19th, 1904.
