FOR BABY'S SKIN ST. JACOBS ONS
SCALP AND HAIR
Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with an inherited or early developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, and blood, becomes an object of the most tender solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura» : tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and prosperity. Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best, the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.
Warm baths with CUTICURA SOAP, to cleanse the skin of crusts and scales and soften the thick and cuticle, gentle anointings with Cuticura Oint. MENT, to instantly allay itching, irritation, and inflammation, and soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA RESOL- VENT PILLS (80e below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often sufficient to cure when the best physicians fail.
Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap
Assisted by CUTICURA OINTMENT, for preserving, purifying, and beautifying the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the stopping of failing hair, for softening, whitening, and soothing red, rough, and sore hands, for baby rashes, itchings, and change, in the form of baths for annoying Irritations and inflammations, or too free or offensive perspiration, in the form of washes for ulcerative weaknesses, and for many Banative, antiseptic purposes which readily suggest themselves to women, especially mothers, and for all the purposes of the tollet, bath, and nursery.
CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are prepared to meet the wants of delicate women, and sensitive children, and are pure, awoot, and tasteless. They aro beyond question the most successful blood purifiers and humour cures yet compounded.
COTICURA REWEDins are sold throughout the world. Australian Depots P. Towra & Co., Bydney, British Depois 27-25. Charterhouse Sq.. London. French Depot: 5 Rue de la f'alx, Pario. POTTER DRUG AND CHEM. Cour, Bola Props, Boston, U. 8. A. “All about the Săiu," f:ce.

Mrs ELLEN, SKIN SPECIALIST,
It is probable, as a consequence of this series of reflections, that Americal industry is changing its tactics and weeks elsewhere 's field for ite'expansión. It has soon been found. What, indeed, saka M. Méline, is small and miserable Europe with its |300,000,0.0° inhabitants provided with everything by its own national industries, when compared to China with ita400,000,000. consumers, who will only begin their economić existence to-morrow, thứ whose innumerable requirements must be satisfied? With such an outlet the United States can double and even treble its production with-- out provoking the slightest internal crisis, The future of its exports is secuted; Bug in order to reach China it is now necessary to páss by Japan, which has 7 taken the lend of the yellow faces and is herself a Government hastened to seize the a good customer. That is why the Ameri- opportunity afforded them by the Husso Japanese war to manifest to Japan their secret sympathy. This will go on till the end of the war, and it is to be hoped that no complication will arise to call forth in any shape or form the intervention of the Powers, for it is very probable that it is nut towards Russia that President Roosevelt would turn. Was it not he who once said that the Pacific Ocean was destined to be come an American lake 2 It must be acknowledged that his whole policy tends to justify these prophetic words. The com mercial conquest of the countries bordering the Pacific began long ago and le progres- aing with giant strides.

There we signs that China is waking up. to the advantages of modern methods of transport, and that progress is being made in railway construction is evident from the fact that Mosers, Bayer, Pescock, and Co., Limited, of Gorton, near Manchester, bare recently built for the Peking Syndicate Railways six powerful locomotives. These engines are of the six-coupled type, with
24. outside cylinders 18 in. in diameter b
by in. stroke, and have been designed to the specification of Messrs Livesey, Son, and Henderson, who are the consul ing engl. neers to the syndicate. They are for a 4-ft. 81.in. gauge railway, where they will have 'to work mixed passenger and goods traffic. They therefore combine great tractive power with driving wheels sufficiently large to allow speeds of 88 to 40 miles per hour to be attained. In order to burn the inferior coale available in the districts through which the railway passes, specially large fire-grates A1, have been provided. The cylinders have
the steam chests on the top, and they are fitted with cast-iron balanced slide-valves. -Enginering.
ELECTRIC TRACTION TRUCKS.
The employment of electricity and the application of the power direct to the axle from a rotating motor had little or no parallel or analogy in either horse car, The very first steam car, or cable car. crade attempts at applying the motor direct to the wheels and axles of either the horse or cable cars demonstrated at once their attor inadequacy, and a new type of truck Who the had, therefore, to be designed. originators of the first design actually were, it would be very hard to say with any degree of accuracy; but in the opinion of Traction and Transmission, Mr M ses G. Hubbard, a mechanical engineer of some repute in Chicago, U.S.A., was probably
the pioneer. The design which he originated in 1884 contained the anatomical structure, or all the important members, of the prosent single truck.

the electrical engineers were just as primitive in their ideas, a very small motor was first designed, of from 6 to 10 horse- power. The electrical equipment, of course, was quite heavy compared with what it is to-day, especially the controlling apparatus, and the variation between the first trucks
built and those now in use is not so great as the difference between the traction motors,

Lewis was first charged with maliciously wounding the complainant, but the charge
was reduced to one of common assault and to this he pleaded guilty.
The complainant asked His Worship to deal leniently with the case as he was cor- tain that the assault had been committed in the heat of the moment.
Mr Hazeland considered that the charge was a very serious one, but taking into consideration the complainant's request he would impose a fine of $250. The fine was immediately paid as the defendant was a man with plenty of money, having had $3,485 in his possession when searched by the police.
