The new Dichu route to the Chumbi is now being surveyed, but the snow will most probably prevent the commencement of its construction until next spring. It avoids the Joylap Pass altogether and it should not be impossible to construct it with gradients so easy as to render practicable its utilisation hereafter for the track of a light mountain railway with rope attach- ments on the steeper slopes, thereby, in case of need enabling supplies to be pushed up expeditionaly as far as Phari.

ALLAHABAD, October 18.
As the troops march back from Gyantse to Chumbi the various telegraph offices along the road are closed; but the through wire without intermediate offices is being maintained.
The survey party with the Tibet force, excluding the two officers detached at Gyantee for Gartok, will finish their work at the end of this month by the time they will have reached Chumbi. The working пр
of all the material they have collected should take many months and there can be no issue of the completed maps for a long time to come, if indeed it is consider- ed politic ever to make them public.

SJULA October 19. The withdrawal of the Tibet. Mission escort is progressing rapidly. General Macdonald reports that the rear column arrived at Phari from Tona on the after- noon of the 7th after encountering a severe gale and snowstorm on the Tangla lasting from 7-20 a. m. to 5 p. m. The long march of the nineteen miles under extremely tr ying circumstances told severely on the troops. All the posts between Phari and Gyantse have now been withdrawn. The column was to march to Gautsa on the 18th unless much more snow fell.

The Géd of Fire, (From a Correspondet.)
CANTON, Nov. 3. The daily paperi to-day publish a de- tailed statement of the recent difference which cropped up between the residents on the Shameen, and the Chiness on Shaki, a wealthy street opposite the Shameen, on the question of the amount of noise per- mitted at the yearly worship of the god of fire.
Rumour has it that the French authoris ties did not interfere. In this particular instance they have incurred less dis approbation at the hands of the Chinese than the British.
As everybody knows the yearly worship of the god of fire is a noisy and a costly. affair, and when a rich street like the Sha ki celebrates its festival the noise is some- what trying. It is not to be wondered at therefore that, Europeans being so numerous now, efforts should be made to lessen the pandemonium.

THE SCHOOLS QUESTION
`Children Ruined BY EXCITEMENT,
WE
TE all admit the usefulness of Educa
tion and the good done by Board and other schools. But the terrible effect of over-excitement and forced work for Examinations demands enquiry. Children are everywhere breaking down from this

cause.
The cause is over-excitement in school, acting on weak constitutions; the cure is nervo-feeding. If the brain and nerves are properly fed-up, children learn early and keep their health. Blood is the food of brain and nerves, Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people are the food of the blood. It is pale, thin, anemic children children with sharp, pinched-looking faces, lips always open, eyes with dark rime, gums pale and bloodless, who break down from too much school. St. Vitus' dance, which used to be a rare disease, is every year getting more common, and doctors find it very difficult to cure. How Dr Williams' pink pills cure it, by feeding up the nerves and brain with the new, rich
blood, which they make, is well shown by
the following example,
We have selected one of the very worst cases of St. Vitus' danoo. It is that of a young lady who had some of the best medical attention in more than one hos- pital. This young lady, Miss Harriet Louisa floborts, resides with her parents at 41, Ada-road, Smethwick, Birmingham, England, and it is ten years since the first Mr Roberts sign of illness WAA thus rolates the story of her daughter's suffering:-
sced.
But
I first noticed that my daughter's hands were unsteady. If asked to carry a plate or a basin she would drop it, and I thought that it was a clumsy way she had. she would cry and say 'Oh, mother, I really cannot help it!' Sho often cried because she could not do her lessons. Soon I began to see that she afflicted with some nervous complaint.
wad
I hoped she would grow out of it; but as her nervousness increased, I took her to the children's hospital as an out-patient for about twelve months, but she grow so much worse in spite of all the skill bestowed on her that she was admitted as an in-patient

for a further three months. little better, she resumed school, but a fortnight after she was away again, and for the next two years she was a patient at the Queen's Hospital, and at the general hos pital where, after five weeks' treatment as a resident patient, she was discharged, a Sister at the hospital remarking that overy thing possible had been done for her. I fetched her home thoroughly disappointed. She appeared to me not one bit better than when she entered.
Johanne, German steamer, 962, Ipland, Bangkok Oct. 27, Rice.—JEBSEN & Co.
Chusan, British steamer, 2,852, H. W. Kenrick, R.N.R., Bombay October 19, and Singapore 30, Mails and General- P. & 0. 8. N. Co.
The nervousness had undoubtedly do- veloped into St. Vitus' dance. She couldn't keep still two minutes together. It was impossible for her to do her own hair, and there was a curious jumping way about her. We were obliged to put her bed against the wall lest who should tumble out; and often, on going to her room, I have found her underneath the bed. Her eyes rolled strangely, her tongue stuck out of her mouth, her head would nod, and her hands at one time shook so violently that she could not feed herself. In walking, she would drag her legs after her as if they were useless.
want on,
But I am thankful to say,' Mrs Roberta that she looks very different now, and the reason of it is this: My son called our attention to Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people. He bought us one bottle and when Harriot had taken theso, to the surprise of everyone there was decided improvement. He bought her an- other, and then a third. She has started to go to business now. All my neighbours know how she was afflicted and, can vouch for the truth of this. I have not ex- aggerated the facts in the least.'
