FLYING MACHINE.

Major B. Baden-Powell distinguishes be tween machines lifted upward by screw propellers and aeroplanes, also › driven by propellern, but moving with a slight upward inclination. His largest machine model, about 9 ft. long, consists of bamboo, , aerop lanes, and rubber cords, nearly in, in thickness; the machine weighs 3 lb., the rubber about 11b, Soraw-propellera should, According to the different suthorities, raise up to 58 lb. per horse-power; the mean value scems to be 33 lb., but nothing like that has been realised in large-scale exper iments. Maxim has obtained a Santos Dumont 11 lb., Zeppelin

engines) 7 lb., Renarn, however, with different screws, 17 lb. up to 48 1b.; the screw form evidently, is of Importance. Major Baden-Powell, himself realised 5 lb: with a 1-horse-power petroleum motor, and from 11 tb. to 14 Ib. in larger experiments. It has recently been pointed out that the auction effect on the upper surface has to be considered in addition to the

pressure on the lower surface, and that the skin friction. in air is by no means negligible, as even Langley has assumed. Zahn has shown that, taking relative densities, this friction 1376 is as great for air as for water Aeroplanes should lift four times as much sa screws, but, says Engineering they have not been found much superior.

power can be taken to almost inaccessible places. It can be taken here, there, under, over, through, beyond, round a corner, in less time almost than it takes to write it, but it does not carry with it the dodger that a

n high voltage current possesses, through possible damaged insulation. If the conducting medium, which is a tube or armoured hose, for instance, gets damaged, it does not, like the electric current, damage. by fire any inflammable material in its immediate vicinity. There is no danger from shock in handling the hose, as there is in touching a live wire. Compared with the hydraulic means of conveying power, it is much cleaner and less objectionable : there are no jeta of water squirting out and soaking everything in their path, and corroding all the metallic surfaces with which they might come in contact. As a breast drill you can apply whatever pressure you wish, and at the same time, have both hands for guiding the

Auger. If a job requiring a large number of mortise-joints turns up, and you have not the:

rtising machine installed, by getting a light pneumatic mer and a suitable chisel you can make four or five

alotted recesses, while another man, plodding on in the old way, is making one. The modern foundry is in- complete without an installation of com- pressed air. Instead of employing your skill ed and highly paid moulders for riddling and sieving, a cheaper hand can be employ ed for feeding a pneumatic shaker, which, oscillating several hunderd times per minute, will get through the work in one- tenth the time. A large amount of time can be saved in the fettling shop by supplying the dresser with pneumatic hammers, which, or about the 26th instant, the RED in the cutting off of LIGHT making the Northern side of the

THE INVENTION OF GUN.

POWDER.

Dr. Oscar Guttman has recently' been able to trace the much-disputed date of the invention of gunpowder back to the year 1596 at least. There are documents, he points out in a commmunication published in the Journal of the Society of Oh mical Industry, according to which the Arabians made use of explosive mixtures about 1:80; but these notes do not appear to be more reliable than the numerous Indian docu- ments to which reference is frequently

Attention has been drawn to this treasure by Gustav Oppest, who erronently ascribes the date 1330 to it. Dr Guttmann finds the the document is dated 1326. He couldn't give a satisfactory account of himself, asid the gunner, as he hauled one Chinese boy to the guard teni.

As he brought him up the sentry released his hold on the boy.'

The city of Shiahing is interesting as the first place in China where the Roman Catholic missionaries settled five hundred years ago. To-day there are several mis- sionaries of the Church Missionary Society resident there, and some work is done by the American Baptists. In the old days it used to be the seat of the Viceroy of the Liang Kwang, i e., Kwangtung and Kwang. si, but latterly his seat has been in Canton. In some ways the glory of the place has Coparted, eclipsed by the above men- tioned place, but it is still one of the most important cities of the province. It does a large trade in grass and matting. Its carved marble curiosities are worth getting.

Learing Shiuhing the steamer will travel on all night, now and then disturbing the slumbers of the passengers by whistling to warn a junk of its approach, or to call its agent at some port of call. The thriving city of Takhing will be passed in the small hours, and Dosing later on.
