MR. STEAD AND THE MORALS OF ACTRESSES.
Amusing Reply by Mr. Bernard. Shaw.
In the July number of the Review Reviews, Sir William Stead gave his First Impressions of the Theatre, in which he seemed to imply that the charge that the stage appealed to the worst passions and combined in itself all the temptations of the world, the Bosh, and the devil,' had never been disproved. He also said that When a youth of sixteen, though he had never been in a theatre, he conceived a romantic passion for an actress he had never seen merely from looking at her photograph in shop windows, Mr Bernard Shaw fends the following amusing reply to Mr Stoad :-
My dear Stend,As a playgoer of nearly forty years standing, a playwright and' a practised critic of the theatre, I have read your maiden effort with many ohuckles.
As to your autobiographical beginnings, we knew already that you were very badly brought up, and are a person of outrageous- ly exocasive temperament. All that need be said in this connection is to point out that if you had been taken to the pantomi- me. when you were six, and thereafter 1376 regularly every year, you would have com- pounded for all later temptations in your childhood by a perfectly innocent adoration of the fairy queen, and would have been as proof at twenty-one against the leading. lady's make-up as you are now against the blandishments of a lady journalist. The real danger of 'cloistered virtue' is that SUITE of 2 ROOMS, on the Ground-when it is let out of the cloister (as it needs A floor of the Annex, suitable for
sooner or later) it is duped by the must be tawdriest wiles of vice, and beglamuured by attractions that no self-respecting pro- fligate would deign to look twice at.

Give me a man broken down from dissipation, hard work, or worry, from any cause which has sapped his vitality. Let him.
follow my advice for three months and I will make him as vigorous in every respect as any man of his age.
I will not promise to make a Hercules of a man who was never intended by nature to be strong and sturdy. Even that man
I can make better than he is; but the man who has been strong and has lost his strength I can make as good as be ever was. I can give back to any man what he has lost by abuse of the laws of nature.
whose brain and body are wesk, who alceps badly, awakes more tired, than when he went to bed, who Aman
man who is nervous, is easily discouraged, inclined to brood over imaginary troubles, who has lost ambition and energy to tackle ha d problems, lacks the animal electricity which the Dr McLaughlin Electric Electro Vigour supplies...
The whole force of vitality in your body is dependent upon your animal electricity. When you lose it in any manner my Belt will replace it, and cure and.
It is a beacon light to a man who has become discouraged from useless dootoring.!
My Electro Vigour has a wonderful influence upon tired, weak nerves,
It braces and invigorates them and stira up a great
force of energy in a man.

No pain can exist where my Electrio Vigour is worn.
There is not a country in the world which has not cures by Dr McLaughlin's Electric Belt.
Now, what does this mean to you, dear reader? If you are not what you ought to be can you ask any better proof to make you try it 7 Is there a remedy which is as simple, as esay to use, as sure to cure and as cheap as Dr MaLaughlin's Electric Vigour? I have not seen one. You must try it. In justice to yourself and to those who look to you for their future happiness, try it now. Aor this minute. Such a matter ought not to be delayed.

expe. dition, and this one has suffered from the usual paucity of the material contribu- tions of geographical enthusiasm, and its striking success has been the work of the few immediately concerned. Explo rers generally avail themselves of every advance of science and every novelty of invention, but the Discovery had none of these things. She is simply an old fashioned whaler, strengthened, in- deed, to resist ice pressure to a greater extent than is contemplated by the Aberdeen boats. The only touch of modernity is the explosion of the old lime juice theory for the prevention of scurvy. Some attacks had resulted from the use of tinned meats, so the preserved foods were thrown over and under an exclusive diet of fresh meat,

From beginning to end there was swing in the piece; applause and laughter abound- ed; and when the final fall of the curtain came the audience went away satisfied with the entertainment provided for them. The opening chorus went so well as to promise an excellent performance and the promise was fully realised as the piece progressed.

The steamer Kum Pot, which has ar- rived in port from Saigon, brought number of very undesirable passengers for this port. No less than 26 Chinese, who had been banished from the French Colony,
were on board and were to have been

A more motley looking crowd it would be hard to collect even amongst the lowest class of co lies here and it is a good thing that they to be allowed to remain in the Colony. In front of our Loft Army the enemy is occasionally sending an indirect fire.
