MISS CORÈLLUS NEW?BOOK,
Forty-three tons of paper, and that of a [specially light kind, have been used in the printing of God's Good Man, Misa Marie Corelli's new novel. Moreover, when Miss Corelli's admirers bave read all the lines in her latest volume, their eyes will have uni- tedly travelled a distance of close on 125,000 - miles, five times round the globe!
Mesars Methuen, the publishers, stats that the orders received constitute a fresh. record, beating even that established by the authoress with her Temporal Poiser
All day long the usually peaceful slope of Essex Street was thronged with messangers hurrying down with requests for more. Telegrams poured in from, all parts of Eu- rope; one harassed bookseller in the far north trebled his orignal order in three hours with no fewer than three successive telegrams.
The same tale comes from the United States and Canada, where the book is being simultaneously published.
The hero is a clergyman, tall and mus cular, with well-knit limbe, broad shoulders, and a head altogether lacking in the hum- ble for conciliatory "droop" which all worldly-wise parsons cultivate for the bene fit of their rich patrons.' He is refreshing- ly unorthodox, even in,bis sermons, and is 1376
the last person in the world to entertain a bad opinion of anyone simply because he or she never went to church. •There was
+
man sent from God whose name was
John,' quotes Miss Corelli, and the Rev. John Walden, who, it seems, has a living Euro-original, is the man.

AN EXECUTIONER AND HIS SUBJECTS.
At the ripe age of eighty-one, the famous French executioner, Louis Deibler, has died peaceably at his Paris residence last month. He resigned bis lugubrious post aix years ago, and was succeeded by his son, who is thirty-nine years of age.
It was in 1868 that the elder Deibler entered on his career as assistant-headsman
at Algiers. Five years later, on the death
of his father, he became executioner-in-chief for Brittany, and in 1879 reached the highest post in his profession--that of sole executioner for France,
His first task was to put to death monster named Laprade, who had murdered- his father, mother; and grandmother under circumstances of the greatest barbarity. So fierce was the resistance that he offered 'on the scaffold that the heademan had to stun him by dashing his head on the pave ment..
T
Another of his ' cases was the police. sergeant Provost, who, enjoying the reputation of a model officer, was neverthe.. less convicted of murdering two persons, whose dismembered bodies he threw into the Paris sewers. He died with great firm- nesa, declaring that not all his blood could wash out his crimes.
Pranzini, the elegant and fascinating, Ravachol, the tigerish Anarchist, and Caserio Santo, the assassin of President Carnot, were among the criminals who died by the hand of Deibler. Five hundred is- said to have been the total of his cases in his nineteen years of office.
When Carrara, the Italian mushroom- grower, who killed and tried to burn the
body, of a man whom his wife had lured into his house, was thrown under the great knife trembling with fear, one of the assist ants shouted, He is dead! It is a corpse that you are going to behead." It was true;- the assassin had died of sheer terror. But even as the man spoke the blade descended and did its work.
In appearance, says the Journal, Deibler was short and of weakly physique. Far from being of sinister visage, he looked like a prosperous tradesman, but always wore a somewhat sad expression, while his move- ments, even on the scaffold, were slow and deliberate. He was the perfect execu

HONGKONG Hotel Connivon,
At the Palace Theatre, London, recently, Mr Ralph Dean gave a private demonstra- tiorto a large number of representatives of the Pross of what he calls that Great Magio Kettle Act, in which he was deftly assisted by Miss Hurst. The kettle does not differ in appearance from an ordinary 1687 kettlo, and when the curtain went up for the demonstration it was apparently boiling away on a small, compact cooking stove, while set out on dainty little tables wore chafing-dish, materials for an omelette and custards, grapes, flowers, and some indiarubber balla; another stand supports a block of ice, about the reality of which

held the fluid could be turned to other uses than those of the laundry. Taking some ordinary hollow indiarubber balls, Mr Dean put them under the stream from the

TOKIO, October 15, 4.5 p.m. Marshal Oyama's reports of Friday's fighting included the following staté-
ments.
General Kuropatkin wires that the Rus- siap losses are understood to be about 8,000.
A Word for the Japanese. We find the following in the China Times: The Novosti has interviewed a Major-General with regard to the allega. tions made by the Russian Press that the Japanese have tortured the Russian wound- ed. The Russian officer referred to went through the Russo-Turkish War, the Chi- nese campaign, and took part in the pre- sont war until June, and he docisres cate- gorically that the Japanese soldier is incap. able of such cruelty, and he will not admit for one moment that the Japanese army is guilty of the horrible deess attributed to it. In fact, the Japanese is, above all things, the porsonification of discip- line. In my experience,' continues the General, that is, during the bittle of Kuliench'ong and in the later conflicts, the Japanese attended to our wounded men just as they did to their own. We never found dead or wounded men who had been ill-treated. All the reports furnished by prisoners of war and by such of thein as have escaped from Japanese сар- tivity testify that the Japanese treated our wounded in a thoroughly humane manner.

The Vladivostock Squadron.
The Japan Daily Mail says:-The Vadivostock Squadron consisted originally of four ships-the Rossia, the Gromoboi, the Rurik and the Bogatyr. It was an- nounced that the last-named vessel had sunk on her way back to Vladivostock in- May. Thereafter ramours came that she had not gone down, that she had only run on a rock near the entrance of the harbour, that she had subsequently been taken into the harbour, and even that she had been fully repaired so as to be fit again for action. But it appears that the Japanese authorities place no reliance on this last statement. All reports received by thei go to show that the cruiser did in reality go to the bottom. The allegation that she still exists as a fighting unit- belongs to the same category as the allegation that repairs of the Rossi and the Gromoboi were com-. pleted on the 21st of September. These
