FEARFUL FIGHTING AT
LIAOYANG,
The Paris Journal publishes the follow ing telegram from its Correspondant with the retreating Army, datod Yel-tal. Stop- | tembør 3 :-
After the awful butchery of the night offAugust 31, during which the trenches of the first line of the Liaoyang defences wore filled with several layers of deni heaped 'one above the other, the Japanese hauled their batteries on to the heights which
they
had captured during the mor- *
ning. At two o'clock in the afternoon of the same day their shells commenced to fall on the station of Le-yang and the Russian city in the vicinity, but sparing » the Chinese quarter. In the fortified place all the Military and civil officials were occupied with the immediate removal of
an enormous quantity of rolling stock. More than five hundred waggons filled with wounded, provisions, and household goods thus left the station under the enemy's fire. The civil population, which up to then had been proceeding leisurely with their household removals, now fled ir. a panic.
Shells burst everywhere, even over the hospital, and wounded several persons, 1376 including nurses. In order to get away my-
self I had to pass through the Russian quar ter where I had been staying. My Cossack servant and his horse were, with me, but I lost half my luggage in my fight. The Japanese, without lessening their fire upon the railway station, next commenced the

bombardment of the second line of defence formed by the forts in the plain. During the whole of the afternoon of September 1, and during the night and all day of Septem- ber 2, incessant and furious assaults were directed against the very centre of the
military works established to the West of the station, and close to the line itself. The carnage was horrible. The enemy charged the Russian entrenchments, but fell into pits and traps dug for them.. When these deep holes became choked with the dying and the dead, the Japanese who followed, carried forward by the furious rush, passed over their comrades beneath, only to be shot down at point blank range by the lines of Russion Infantry who were posted behind extraordinary entanglements. of barbed wire.
On September 2 a further battle of in- mense strategic importance was commenced at three o'clock in the morning to the
North-east of Lianyung-that is to ssy, over the whole region between Yon-tai and
the River Tai-tso-ho. General Kuroki's Army made an effort to cut the retreat of the Russian Army by a turning movement from the North-cast. In the afternoon the Japanese were able to take the Yen-tai coal- mines, which arg parallel with the railway.” The Russian loft wavered slightly under the enemy's furious fire, but a Russian bat- tery riddled the mine premises with shells, | and finally the Japanese, who wero onden- vouring to establish themselves there, 1789
had to withdraw' under this hail of pro- jectiles.

MISSION.
Under the auspices of the Madras Ma- bajana Sabha a targely attended public meeting was hold on September 9 at the Pachaiyappahe Hall', Madras, under the pre- uidonny of Rai Bahadur F. Ananda Charlu, Haveral apasches were made con demning the Tibet Expedition an uncalled for and undertaken for the glorification of Lord Curzon and the military element which dominates the counsels of the Government of India. It was orged that the Expediton was undertaken solely in Imperial interests and
in the interests of British trade, and there- fore it was for Great Britain to pay the cost. India, however, would hear some share of the Imperial burdens a unit of the Em pire. The following resolution was adopted with acclamation :-That this public meet. ing of the citizens of Madras records its emphatic protest against the injustice of addling the revenues of India with the cost of the Tibet expedition, and prays that, the Expedition having been undertaken for the promotion of Imperial interests, the whole cost, or at least a substantial portion of it, should be borne by Great Britain.' Resol- utions were also adopted appointing a com- mittee to draw up and submit a memorial to Parliament embodying the prayer of the former resolution, and placing on record their sonse of appreciation of the services of the British Committee of the Congress and distinguished politicians in England in championing the cause of India, special mention being made of Sir Henry Cotton's sympathies and services.

THE schooner Dart, which was built at Carnarvon (Enr.) 78 years ago, and has ever since been in constant employment, is sup- posed to be the oldest vessel of her kind sailing under the British flag. The crew includes captain, 70 years of age; mate, 72; cook, 71; and a seaman, 61, who were all boys together, and are believed to be the oldest crew afloat.
A GREAT DISCOVERY.
THE amazing richness of the Australian Continent in healing roots and herbs has long been the wonder of scientists. For untold ages the natives of that country had only the juices and essences of these roots and herbs for medicine. How effective they proved, even in their crude form, is evinced by the extraordinary health which the natives enjoyed as borne out by Captain Cook, the discoverer of Australia.

MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.
The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports.
the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days.
Some years back, Mr Charles Forde, an eminent scientist, conceived the idea of so utilising the essences of certain of these Australian plants that their healing pro- perties might be made useful to modern man. By loog and careful investigation and experiment he at last gained the knowledge required. He found himself the discoverer of a natural vegetable sub- stance which acted on the liver and digestive organs directly and more offective. ly than any medioine known. The best laboratories, the most modern plant, and all that science dictated as being beat for the purpose was requisitioned in the com- pounding of this substance into convenient medicine form, and the result of it all was the production a few years back of the most perfect medicine of modern timos. This medicine was produced in the form of small beans, which, being prepared for action on the liver, wore called Bile Beans.'
Without the slightest discomfort, Bile Beans prompt the liver and digestive organs to act in nature's normal way, leaving, those organs strengthened and stimulated to continue the performance of their duties without further assistance. They produce a gentle action on the bowels and ridding the system of all impurities, Their price brings them within the reach of all and they are
are the safest family medicine.
