ar a splendid efforis, extending over Hours and twenty Jutes, Montagne Holbein had on Auguff, again to confess himself defeated in his attempt to swim from England to France, the immediate cause of this, his fifth failure in the task, being the cold temperature of the water. Accompanied by a keen and almost frosty atmosphere, the water was three degreas lower than on Holbein's previous swims and five degrees below the tompora the sea when the late Captain Webbccessfully swam, the Channel. Following the splendid course laid down by Cptain B. Foster, there is little doubt that had he been ablo 'to remain in the water, Holboin would have reached Cape. Grianez in 18 or 19 hours, An interesting. feature in connection with the performance was the entirely unexpected presence of a powerful French champion swimmer named Burgesse, a member of the Paris Swimming Club, who, intends to attempt the Channel swim next year, and had chosen this opportunity to try a twelve hours' swim.. There was great surprise when the unknown visitor, oiled all der from head to foot, entered the sea immediately after Holbien, having been rowed ashore from the French tug Calaisien.

Arrived off Lydden Sprut, Holbein, was rowed ashore, and entered the sea at 4,32 p.m. amidst hearty cheers from a crowd assembled on the cliffs and from those on the tuge. The fleet of rowing boats accom- panied him quite a long way out. The sea temperature taken at this time was 62 degrees, the air temperature being the same, which was considered quite low enough. Instead of relying upon his well- 1582 known back stroke, which he adopted on the four previous occasions, Holbin went off with a powerful side-stroke, making 25- to 30 to the minute. It was, therefore, speedier than the back-stroke, and had the further advantage of enabling him to keep his bead clearer of the Water. There was a fresh Easterly eze and a nasty choppy sea, which Was a source of discomfort to the swimmer. From the start the progress made was most satisfactory, the first hour seeing Holbein mos than a mile out from the starting point, and at the end of the second hour he had been carried only half a mile by the and drift. completion of the eighth hour he was half way across the Channel, and making a capital course. He had swum three-quarters of a knot, or nearly a mile, almost direct towards the French coast in sixty minutes. Nourishment was taken every two hours.

About one o'clock Holboin commenced to experience a bad time, being frequently ick. There were other bad symptoms, And so ill did he seem that Mr Nix, who was in charge of one of the feeding boats, came up to the tug to get soine webbing, in order to assist the swimmer should it be necessary to haul him out of the water. In spite of the illness, Holbein kept steadily. on, not uttering a word of complaint. At the end of the ninth hour, and throughout the tonth, his condition was much the same, and those on board the tug became anxious, marvelling at the manner in which he stuck to his task in such trying circum- klonices. Suddenly he inquired whether he had been swimining for ton hours, and on losing informad by Shorland that he had been in the son over that me, Holbein an- nounced his intention of giving up, adding, I have been sick nearly all night. He was at once enveloped in dap nels steeped in hot water, and riven hot drinks, under the influence of which his con- dition rapidly improved; and when the tug reached Dover two hours later he was able to walk to his hotel. Holbein expressed to his friends his disappointment, and the gallant wimmer was given a rousing cheer in recognition of his plucky effort. CANTON, September 28. The following is from a native paper, and contains a description of the tragedy which was enacted on Shameen the day before yesterday :-

Some Americats were, about 7 o'clock in the evening, on the north bridge of the Shameen and indulging in conduct that might be called rowdy, though there does not appear to have been any animus shown. There happened to be passing a compra: dore, from the S. S. THE GOVERNMENT INDICTED.

Attacked by Mr Shewan,

A Reply by the Governor/ During the discussion on the Estimates for 1905, at the meeting of the Legislative Council to-day, the Hop. R. Showan, in a lengthy speech, attacked the Government on ita policy of sanitation, road-making, tree felling and other matters.

In the course of his speech he con- gratulated the Colony on the changes that had recently been made in several of the departments. In the pre ent Governor they had a man who, he thought, would take a real interest in the Col.ny, and who would deal justly with all who came before him, whether foreigner or Chinese. He might even

overcome the prejudice

On hoing called to order by His Excel lency Mr Shewan went on to say that in the New Director of Public Works they were very fortunate to have a man who

could rise as occasion demanded it and accelerate the business of the public. On one occasion & friend of his desired to obtain a licence to orect a matshed to hold
