HUNT FOR LOST TREASURE SHIP.
SAN FRANCISCO. August 13. The lure of the gold buried in the deep with the long lost steamship 'Rio de Janes ro' has induced another party of treasure: scokers to search for the bones of the vesse in the hope of finding the $200,000 that is contained in her safe.
The new company is called the Three Year Mystery Salvage Company, and its promoter, Captain Miller, claims to be in possession of facts that will unravel the mystery that has baffled so many mariners. It Is Captain Miller's assertion that he knows where the wreck of the #eamer is lying, and he positively believes that he will be able to recover the lost treasure.
Captain Miller is not the first sanguine searcher that has claimed to have, located the Rio de Janeiro. Since the steamship was sunk more than three years ago some. where in the Golden Gate many salvage companies have been organised to find her. The last company, known as the Rio Wrecking Company, called spiritualistic mediums to its assistance, but even that availed them nothing, for though the diver claimed to have located the wreck in
the vicinity of Baker's Beach, they were 1376 never able to bring up ang positive proof that their assertions were correct. The Three Year Mystery Salvage-Com- from the shattered hopes

trains. The scene was the same which Zola so graphically described, and, if the orga- nisers are to be credited, the number of pilgrims this year is greater than ever. The correspondent was assured that ten thousand pilgrims and fifteen hundred
sick
persons were leaving within the naxt forty-eight hours. Though possibly there is some exaggeration on these numbers, he saw five crowded trains leave the station, one of, which was the famous white train, filled with sick humanity suffering from all the ills that flash is heir to. It is an extraordinary sight, the departure of the Lourdes pilgrims. Parsons of every station in life, and from all parts of the country, are to be found in this motley crowd; and, like the Crusadors of old, all wear a common sign -a small red cross-upon their breasts. The sick and infirm are brought upon stretchers, and even mattresses, and carried to the trains by the attendants, who are volunteers drawn from the priesthood, the convents, and devout members of the congregations of country churches.
In any case, their solicitude and tender- ness for their charges are wonderful; and, whatever may be one's personal opinion concerning the efficacy of the waters of the Lourdes Grotto, one cannot help admiring the sincerity of those who take part in the

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Work Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vossels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and Ġerman in about 28 or 30 days.

There are lots of people who sadly need informa- tion regarding the health of Hongkong. Opponents of the coolie traffic have raised the plague as n bogey since they have failed by other means to impress their argu ments, and we find such men as Dr James L. Maxwell, of Tainan, Formosa, giving further publication to positively foolish utterances made by Dr Evatt. In an article in the British Weeldy, Dr Maxwell writes regarding the coolie traffic. But it would be well to again | emphasise the special folly of allowing Hongkong to be the recruiting centre for coolies to the Transvaal. Dr. Evatt.
