other diving apparatus. With this machine at Tacoma recently Captain Worden G.

Smith viewed the wreck of the British ship

Andeldna, which lies at the bottom of Commencement Bay. The account says:——

As comfortable as if seated in the cabin of the finest vessel afloat, Captain Smith, with a telephone receiver at his ear, calmly gave instructions to the men betweert whom and him 180 feet of water inter- vened, and then started on his return trip to the surface.

Since one night in January 1899, whon a light breeze suddenly sprang up, and the Andelana, lying at anchor in Tacoma Bar- bour, her foolhardy master having removed too much ballast, turned turtle and carried every man aboard her to a watery gravd, nơ human eye had gazed on the vessel and

lived to tell the tale until Captain Smith performed his feat. Diver' Billy Baldwin lost his life in the attempt.: Other divern have made the descent, but without success

either in locating the vessel or getting to the bottom. But Captain Smith made the trip under far different circumstances,

When it was announced recently, that another attempt would be made to raise the sunken ahip old mariners looked their con- tempt. But they had not heard of the Neptune Salvage Company. This company, which is operating in connection with marino underwriter, expects to accomplish much along the Pacific coast in the way of recovering sunken craft which lie in water too deep for the ordinary salvagé opemtors.

The outfit of the company consists of a specially-constructed scow, a strong donkey engine, and a steel cage. It is this cage in which Captain Smith, the inventor, made his trip to the bottom of the harbour.

The steel cage is totally unlike either the ordinary diving apparatus or the diving bell. It can be supplied with air from the

weight of six tons becondes less than zero, for the air inside keeps it afloat. A heavy weight is attached to the bottom, which carries the cage steadily downwards as 1672 rapidly as the cable by which it is attached to the scow is payed out. This weight is detachable from the inside, and should any- thing happen to the hoisting apparatus all that is necessary for the operator to do is to drop his ballast and glide quickly to the surface.

Particulars and Conditions of the Letting by Public Auction Sale, to be held on MONDAY, the 19th day of September, 1904, at 3 p.m., at the Uffices of the Public Works Department, by Order

After an examination of fifteen minutes, the cage was ordered hoisted, and in a few minutes Captain Smith and his companion emerged smilingly from the manhole. He is a secretive man, and not much inclined to talk of his submarine operations. All wreck, and that he thought she could be he would say was that he had seen the easily raised.

Mr Hawks was communicative.

Whether Captain Smith will attempt to raise the Andelana bimsolf or not is questioned. His purpose in going to Tacoma was largely to test his outfit and prepare for a trip to the coast of Vancouver Island, where a number of treasure ships returning from Alaska have found resting- places at the bottom of the ocean. He is now satisfied that his invention is equal to any emergency, and will risk greater depths.

Twenty-seven persons lost their lives, and, besides the loss of life, a cargo of copper, valued at many thousands of dollars, wont to the bottom. For years at different times divers tried to recover the cargo, but failed. The sixth one who went down became fouled in the wreck and lost his life. WHO DISCOVERED THE CIR-

CULATION ÓF THE BLOOD?

One by one our idols are shattered. The popular boliof, which has been certainly fostered by medical and other historians, that the circulatio : of Aba-blood was dis- covered by William Harvey in 1628, is controverted by an editorial writer in Am- erican Medicine (July 2). Ho examines the claim made by the countrymen of Michael Servotus, who was burned as a heretic by John Calvin in 1563, that the circulation of the blood was known to him three-quarters of a century before Harvey's day, and concludes that we must acknow- ledge its justice. In Servetus's so-called heretical work, De Christianismi Rostitu- tione' (On the Restitution of Christianity), only two copies of which are now in exist. ence, occurs the following passage :-

The vital spirit is the result of a ming- ting in the langs of the inspired air with the elaborated, thin portion of the blood, which the right ventricle of the heart tranemits to the left. But this passage of the blood does not, as is vulgarly believed take place through the median wall of the heart: but by a clever device the thin blood is driven from the right ventricle of the heart through the lungs by a long [circuitous] route; it is prepared by the langs, is rendered (reddish] yellow, and is transferred from the arterial vein into the venous artery, It then becomes mixed with the inspired air in this same vorous artery, is cleansed of soot by [the net of oxpiration, and thus the entire mixture is finally drawn into the artories from tha loft ventricle of the beart by the disstoln « suitable pabulum, so that it becomen is converted into] spirit [air ?].'

This, together with what immedia'o'y follows, which is too long for quotation here, . constitutes, according to the writer, a much more lucid account of the circulation an that written by Harvey in his book. D. Motu Cordis (On the Hearts – Motion), which is declared to be 'verhow and soine what muldled. Furthermore, Calpino (or in the Latin forma Cusalpinas) is put forward by the Italians as the discoverer. In a volume published in Venice in 1571 this author also clearly describes the circu Ination of the blood.

The valves of the latter were shown to Harvey at Padun by Fabricius ah Aquapen- dente. But their use was not made clear. After Harvey returned to England, in dis cussing these structures with an engineer- ing friend, the latter pointed out that, be ing placed with their free edges toward the hort, their only possible use was to main- tain a continuous current in that direction. The crux of the circulation was solved at last! And William Harvey discovered-?'

Opening Up the Trade. (From a Correspondent).

CANTON, September 9.

I have been informed that recently a Wai Un has been set to Kongmun to attend to the various matters that demand attention, consequent upon the opening up of this large trading mart to foreign commerce.

Of course, Kongmun is not a walled city, and, therefore, has not been ruled by a dis- triat magistrate; but with its increasing im portance, it may be assumed that there are many matters that demand attention, and a deputy has been appointed, to avoid a large accumulation of arrears, which cou'd hardly be avoided, if all matters were left to the 8an Ui Magistrato.
