Conquered by Russia--and it can scarcely be doubted that she will be conquered- Japan will become an English protectorate, and be reduced to tho, position of a third- rate Power; the Japanese will serve as`. English mercenaries just as did the Swiss in Europe.-Peterburgskaya Gazeta.

We have demonstrated how unnatural je the position of a great Power like Russia, whose fleet is abut up in the Black Sea, and cannot leave it simply because England does not wish it. True, the treaty closing the Dardanelles is signed by other great Powers and acknowledged by Russia herself; but this in no wise modifies the unnatural position which is created.-Novosti, St. Petersburg.
The drought is telling heavily in Scot land, and not since the dry summer of 1887 have some of the northern rivers been so low. LENSLESS PHOTOGRAPHY.
This phrase, which is quite in accordance with the modern fashion of naming a thing from what it has not rather than from what it has is applied by a contributor, to The Scientific American, N. R. Briggs, to what is usually know as 'pinhole photo- graphy-the aubatitution of a minute aper.

camera. This method, Mr Briggs notes,
has been exciting new interest of late, tho
its morita for certain kinds of work havo
long been recognized. He writes;

one too, with a camera without a lens, may
seem to many utterly incredible. Never-
theless, it is done, and this innovation in MARUNO-UCHI, TOKIO. photography has become an interesting feature with many lovers of the photogra phic art.

A piece of tinfoil, through which was pierced a fine needle hole, to serve the purpose of a lons in admitting light to the sensitive plate, was secured to the front picco of the camera, in place of a lens, and the exposure made in the regalar manner. Pictures thus mado are now popularly A1, known an pinhole photographs. The pic- tures, however, were not wholly satisfactory owing to the difficulty of getting a perfectly -round and smooth hole through this soft, Aexible metal, for in this by the main principle of success. the bringing out of a new invention called MANAGER, MITSU BISHI CO., WITH
the 'radioscope,' which consists of a very ! thin piece of hammered brass plate, through which is bored an accurately round and smooth hole, and so mounted that it can be quickly adjusted to any camera, or any ¦ light-tight box that fancy may die ate.
There is a lack about pinhole pictures of that extreme sharpness produced by si regular pho ographic lens; but, as has been wisely said this is more than compensated for hy a softness of totie equalled only by the brush of an artist.
The interest manifested in this new
objective is duo to the fact that it is of universal focħs
the perspective
•
is true, no part of the picture being out of focus, while interior and architectural pho- tographs are rectiliner- that is, without distortion of any kind, for the rays of light fall directly upon the plate without inter forence of any kind.
Nor is the work of the pinhole objective confined to any one subject, for with it most pleasing portraits can be made.
And
it is said that work requiring the sharpest definition, such as copies, reproductions of documents, etc., can he often better done by the pinhole objective than it can with fine lens. The reason is obvious. A lens focuses often sharper than the eye, giving a staring, unnatural effect to tho resulting print.
Another singular feature in connection with the pinhole objective is that any size camera may be used. For instance, it will tako a picture upon a plate three inches long. Therefore, it will be seen that all one has to do is to arrange his camera for a small or large plate, and with the latter interesting panoramic views could be secured. There is no doubt that a very cheap and satisfactory folding camera, in which to use any of the present series of roll films, could be made for special panoramic work.
B
'Of course, it should be understood that, owing to the small amount of light ad- mitted through pinhole objective, the tine of expaure will naturally be longer than with lene; and while it is possible to over-expuse, there is less liability than
with a lens."
