FIGHT IN THE SEA.
Ten men, survivors of a crew of 23, were landed at Falmouth (Eng.) early last July. They presented a pitiable spec- tacle. Most of them were scantily attired; some were barefooted; and one poor fellow was suffering from a smashed knee.
The men were the survivors of the crow

had foundered off Land's End after colli sion with the Hull steamer Cresyl. >
The vessels, each of which was about 1600 tona register, were in proximity to the Wolf Rock Lighthouse, about 10 miles- south-west of Land's End, but so dense was the fog that the light. was not visible. Suddenly the captain of the Zazpiral dis- cerned the Orenyl closo upon him, and ordered full speed astorn. A moment later there was a tremendous impact, and the bow of the Spaniard was carried away. She at once began to settle down by the head, and within three minutes had dis-- appeared from view.
The crew jumped overboard, and in their frenzy fought one another in the sea for possession of floating wreckage to which to
cling. This eagerness to secure wreckage cost many a life, for as the vessel foundered' the suction drew several men down, while the agitated water carried the wreckage hither and thither, striking the men viol. ently, and inflicting injuries which preven

The captain was the last man leave the sinking ship. He jumped over the stern. As soon as he reached the water the revolving propeller struck him, inflict- ing fatal injuries, and throwing his body into the air.
The English steamer was bably damaged,. but, fortunately, remained afloat. The captain at once ordered the boats to be lowered, and efforts were made to save the Spaniards. The work of rescue was very difficult, for the fog was dense, and there was much floating wreckage. Ten men were rescued, and taken aboard the Cresy, and there is no doubt that the remainder perished. Only one officer of the Zazpirak, the chief mate, was saved. All the crew. were Spaniards.
One of the firemen told a thrilling story, with revealed the heroic conduct of the chief engineer :--
^ I was below at the time (said the man),. and heard, the signal for full spoed nstern. Immediately following the signal there was a tremendous boom, as if there had been an explosion, and we were all thrown off our feet. The chief engineer seemed to realise what had happened, and shouted for all of us below to get on deck. Some of us tried to get our clothing and belongings. The chief engineer remained below until every man had
gone up the ladder, and I believe this thought for his mates cost him his life, for we never saw him again. When
on deck the bow of the vessel was already under water, and the stern in the air, the propeller still revolving, for we had not even had time to stop the engines,

The sturgeon, despite his lumpy armor, furnishes a valuable and attractive leather. When the bony plates are taken off their pattern remains on the skin just as the pattern of alligator scales remains on alligator leather. The Pacific Const stur- goon and the sturgeon of the Great Lakes produce a tough leather that is used to make lacas for joining leather balting for machinery, and the laces often outwear the bolting.
The strange garfish, an American fresh water fish, with long toothed jaws like those of the crocodile, has a skin that can ho polished smooth until it has a finish like ivory. It makes beautiful jewel caskets and picture frames.

hard that it makes a breastplate that can turn a knife or a spear. Some of the tiner specimens that have been found are hard enough to turn even a blow from a toms- hawk.
The savages who wore this fish armor also used to wear a fish helmet.
It was
made from the skin of the prickly porcupine fish, and besides protecting the wearer's hoad, it was used as a weapon of offence. The warriors butted their enemies with it, and as it had hundreds of ironlike spikes, the operation was eminently painful to the object of attack.
In Gloucester, the 'king town' of fish, the humble cod has been utilised with success for making leather for shoes and gloves. In Egypt men walk on sandals mado from the skins of Red Sea fish.
In Russia cortain peasant costumes are
trimmed beautifully
with the akins Book. of a fine food fish, the turbot. binders in Europe are binding books with eelskin. The oelskin sorves another and less pleasant purpose. It is braided into whips. The writer was the unhappy mem- bor of a European private school where one of these polskin whips was a prominent instrument of discipline, and he has never cared for eols since then.
Along the big salmon rivers of Siberia the natives often wear brilliant leather garments dyed red and yellow. They are made from salmon skins.
In Alaska beautiful waterproof bags are made from all sorts of fish sking.
The quecrest use is that to which the in- testines of the sea lions are put. They are slit and stitched together to form hooded coats, which are superior to in- diarubber as waterproof garments.
Walrus intestinos are made into sails for boats by the Esquimaux of north-western America.

Even the frog does not escape. Several factories in France and a fow in America make card-cases and other small leather articles from his skin.

been made giving accesa and communication from east and west without descending to A big demand is growing in any low level. Other supplementary roads are in progress. The policy of the present authority is evidently also to remove the troops from the Barracks down-town as much and for as long as is possible. CLAIM FOR RENT IN LIEU OF NOTICE.
Pun Fung Sang sued Teun Fung Wing for 3145, being money due for rent in lieu f notice in respect to No. 115 Jervois
Street.
Mr Barlow appeared for the plaintiff, while Mr F. X. d'Almada e Castro represented the defendant.
Mr Barlow stated that about the middle of the third month this year defendant entered plaintiff's house in Jervois Street as a monthly tenant. He paid three months rent in advance and left about the middle of the sixth month without giving due notice or paying a month's rent in lieu
of notice.
Evidence was led.
Evidence for the defence was given to the affect that the defendants went into the house in Jervois Street for three months
unly, pending the rebuilding of their old place. At the end of the third month they left the house, but did not go back to their old house because the landlord had raised the rent.
Judgment was delivered for defendant with costs.
CLAIM ON A PROMISSORY NOTE.
The case in which Wong Ngok Wan sued Chan Yuot Taun for $282 being principal and interest due on a promissory note dated Jaunary 11, 1901, was settled out of Court. Mr O. Kong Sing was solicitor for the plaintiff, while Mr John Hastings was solicitor for defendant. After the Court Officials had waited for over a quarter of an hour, it was found that the case had been settled.
