Cold bath, and walk and breakfast, and I was on my way to the temple from which the great procession which I had come to aeo was about to start. Outside my hotel the first thing I saw was an old man swing- ing along with that free step which is so characteristic of the people here, where their logs are not hampered by long kimonos. He was dressed in the old- costumo of the Samurai, and, with the two swords in his belt, looked every inch the part.

Neighbours came out to greet him as he passed, and he returned th ir bows with a grace of courtesy not to be seen out. side Japan,

It struck me that, seeing the way the old fellow, with upright carriage, strode down the middle of the village street and the respectful bows with which those who

he might have been a Samurai. I told thy interpreter to ask, and it actually proved to be the case. He heard, moreover, that he was now so abjectly poor that lo was glad to earn the small fee that is given for walking in the procession. Yet his old- time clothes and his swords, which, despite the law's decrees, he had never parted with, brought back the touch and feeling of the days that were dead, and mado him forget that ho was masquerading. The old Richard for the moment was himself again.

Passing up a steep hill, and through the

colonnades of magnificent old pine trees, we reached a plateau in front of the temple. This plateau, where the procession was assembling to start, was of the dimensions of a great cathedral. The immenso straight pine trunks might have been colunins, and the light from the opening above suggested the mosque of Saint Sofia or the Pantheon. It certainly must have been the most picturesque country in the world forty years ago, when the military wore clad in this elaborate armour, and carried those fan- tastic weapons. I got into conversation with a thickset, hornyhanded old fellow, who was thus elaborately caparisoned. Ho said he was seventy-four years of age, and had three sons, all of whom were now away fighting. Well he remembered the time, he said regretfully when these costumes were really worn. Those were the good old times, he said. He appeared to have no love or admiration whatever for the new order of things. Certainly, as far as the change of costume goes, I quite agree with him;

the billycock hat and European clothes are anything but an improvement. The procession was in honour of three Japanese beroes. The previous day three momorial caskets had been carried in pro cession to this temple, and they were now to be carried back. They are immensoly heavy, and highly decorated, one of them weighing close on two tons. It took a large OARDING ESTABLISHMENT. number of young men, who were dres

He never loses an opportunity of solemnly assuring you that his feeling for form or colour, or his partiality for bacon, is temperamental; that tempermentally he is incapable of listening to sermons or of playing the flute; that his learning towards Buddhism is temperamen. te, though it may not appear in his actions until at last you begin to feel that your aversion to him and to the word itself is temperamental in you, and that it is quite useless for you to struggle against it!

There are other words, such as chaste, unique, unparalleled, petrifying, or fronti, which have an evil-if not such an over- whelmingly evil eft et m the character of Those who use them immoderately.

Persons of pronounced individuality tend, of course, to choose and employ unusual and distinctive adjectives, but the generality of people merely follow the fashion in their choice, and it would seem as though there was as little accounting for tashion in adjectives or adverbs as in ladies' bonnets. In Pepys' day mighty und mightily had a vague, in Fanny Burney's monstrous, pradiops, restly, and a st Fred, while Jane Austen's quizzes' and agreeable rattles' used excessive shocking, excessive disagreeable, de., where we now simply and solely employ awful and Numarating, a word which one crofully. may find used of a bonnet or a petticoat in the eighteenth century, is now for Chaste. unately extinct in such a sense. which some years since was employed of a cushion-cover or of the pattern of hearth-rog, is relegated with unique to the description of doubtful articles in shop- windows. horoughly demoralised that wo longer rely on it to express our meaning. Art muslins, art colours and art carpets have had their blighting effect on the word, and some steps should, I think, be taken to prevent a further degradation of honest, reliable words, or who knows where it will stop Wo may see in shop windows bonnets ticketed as moral, trim- nings as virtuous, parasols as inspiring, aud curtain materials as clerating in tone, and certain kinds of millinery may be lescribed as being of the higher millinery!

UNCONTROLLABLE WORDS.

Florence Popham in the Chronicle says:- Adjectives you can do anything with!' said Humpty Dumpty to Alice, and he went on to inform her that when he made a word

do a lot of work he always paid it extra. Humpty Dumpty's mind and methods, however, were original, and it is certain that an ordinary mortal nowadays cannot do what he likes with an adjective, for, like children who have ceased to keep their place' through the injudicious behaviour of their elders, adjectives have become unruly and tyrannical, and even adverbs display a tendency to get quite flagrantly out of hand.

It would be difficult, no doubt, to treat such a large staff as a vocabulary with por fect impartiality, but think what a number of honest, reliable, and appropriate adjec tives and adverbs are literally dying for want of encouragement, or atrophying for want of uso, while others, like awful and awfully, frightful and frightfully, deceut and decently, grow fat, insolent, and out of hand through having too much attention bestowed upon them!

Supposing, like Humpty Dumpty. we paid our words on a Saturday night in pro- portion to the work they had done, how These favoured ones would swagger and bounce when they drew their vages, while others, just a serviceable, crept away empty-handed, or with merely a miserable

puttance.

MOTHER

SEIGEL'S SYRUP

AIDS DIGESTION CURES INDIGESTION.

Relish for food and power to digest it are essential to sound health, for only by the digestion and assimilation of food can lost or worn-out bodily tissue be replaced and life sustained. When digestion fails, as in dyspepsia or indigestion, both body and brain are starved, the patient becomes languid and weak, incapable of active, vigorous effort, or clear sustained thought. Headaches, loss of appetite, pains alter eating, fulness at the chest, palpitation, anemia and sleeplessness are but a few of the many disorders which have their origin in imperfect digestion and nutrition. Thirty drops of Mother Seigel's Syrup, taken daily after meals, makes food nourish you. It gives tone and vitality to the stomach, liver and intestines, thus ensuring the thorough digestion and assimilation of food.

HAS CURED THOUSANDS.

"For three years 1 suffered greatly from biliousness and indigestion.. When I sat down to table 1 could eat hardly anything. Attacks of vomiting made me quite weak, and I was surprised at the change it effected in my condition. On rising in the morning I was seized with dizziness, and had on several occasions to go. Mack to bed again, I tried various remedies, but remained in quite the same condition. While at Cape Town, during the war, I heard of the wonderful qualities of Mother Seigel's Syrup, and I decided to give it a trial. After the first bottle the dizziness and billous feeling left me and I continued using the Syrup until I felt completely cured."E. Petersen, Lower End, Main Street, Johannesburg. March 29th, 1904.

CHEFOO, August 28. A large number of junks with refugees have arrived to-day from Port Arthur.

From the 17th to the 23rd inst, there were several severe engagements round Port Arthur. On the 19th the Japanese occupied a post north of Yitsesban, and subsequently attacked the latter place and drove off the Russians, but did not occupy it, as it is commanded by another fort, but they placed their guns on en adjacent hill which is not covered by the Russian fire.

On the 18th and 19th the Japanese bom barded the fort at Antsesban, but it seema to have held out up to the 26th..

Since the 17th the Japanese have been attacking several forts round Erlangshan, " and on the 21st they stormed some of them and drove off the Russians, but have not occupied them.

On the 20th a forlorn hope of 300 men assailed a fort about one mile south of Sanlichiao (on the railway) and destroyed it. The Japanese occupied Fonghuashan, about four miles north-west of Port Ar- thur, after a hot engagement on the 21st

We note that the Committee have revised the stipulation regarding the number of prizes competitor is silowed to win by exept ing the two open Championships from the operations of the condition. As the rule formerly stood it certainly was absurd.

The Half-mile Championship was won last year by N. H. Alves, who beat .J. Witchell by four yards, the time being 15 minutes 313 secs. There was a strong tide running, however, which carried the swimmers out of their course. The race this year should result in a struggle between N. H. Alves and J. Witchell, but it is probable that Witchell will beat Alves. The race, given calm water, will be swum in about 11 minutes, if the competitors' training times are kept up.

The Swim Undor Water has attracted a large entry, and several of the entrants will finish close together. The brothers Witchell will be among the placed mon.

The 200 yards Championship of the Colony (won last year by O. Cooke, with N. H. Alves second, in 2 min. seconds) will be a close race, N. H. Alves and the two Witchells standing out as the best. C. Cooke and O. Humphreys will finish close behind the leaders.

Making his way to the Boer Headquarters he detailed the story of Cronje's loss, and took up his residence in Pretoria.

Ho was there attached to the Secret Service and appears to have done good work for the Boers, for when they left Pretoria, according to a story he subsequently told, he and another spy were left behind to secure information and, if possible, to buy over sympathisers from the British side
