FOR BABY'S SKIN
SCALP AND HAIR
Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with. an inherited or early developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, ahd blood, becomes an object of the most tender solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura- tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and prosperity. Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best,' the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.
!
Warm baths with CUTICURA. SOAP, to cleanse the skin of crusts and scales and soften the thickened cutlole, gentle anointings with CUTICURA OINT- MENT, to instantly allny itching, irritation, and inflammation, and soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA RESOL- VENT PILLS (see below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often suflclent to cure when the best physiclans fail.
Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap
Assisted by CUTICURA OINTMENT, for preserving, purifying, and beautifying the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the stopping of falling hair, for softening, whitening, and soothing red, rough, nud sore hands, for baby rashes, itobings, and chaẳngs, in the form of baths for annoying irritations and inflammations, or too free or offensive perspiration, in the form of washes for nicerative weaknesses, and for many Banative, and septic purposes which readily suggest themselves to women, especially mothers, and for all the purposes of the tollet, bath, and nursery.
CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are prepared to meet the wants of delicate women, and sensitive children, and are pure, sweet, and tasteless. They are beyond question the most successful blood purifiers and humour cures yet compounded.

THE TIBET EXPEDITION.
Allahabad, July 28, - General Mandonaki bia established a small post between Gyantse and the Karo La to facilitate the keeping open of communications. It is not expected that the Tibet Mission and escort will now meet with serious resistands short of the Sanpo river, though the numerical strength of the hostile force on the route is not exactly known.
Gyantao, July 24.-On the 19th we arrived at Nagatse fort situated on the bluff of Promontory Hill running out towards Scorpion Lake. It was unoccupied by the enemy and was handed over by the Lhason Delegates, the Ta Lama, the Yutok Shape and the Grand, Secretary who awaited Colonel Younghusband hero.

Colonel Younghusband explained it was too late and repeated that the settlement must be completed at Lhassa. The delegates objected that Lhasa was a holy city and our entry there would be injurious to their religion. The terms were not discussed and the meeting closed without result. The delegates show- d themselves as stubborn and impracti- cable as ever. They have not gone back a point since the meeting at Gyantse and donot seem to realise that we are in a position to dictate terms. The Members of Council are portly men, consequential in appearance, and wore costly robes, saffron, maroon and black, with caps decorated with the Order of the Coral Button. 64, QUEEN'S ROAD, General Macdonald's column was last re- ported, is only eighty-one miles from Lhassa. It is situated in a fortile swampy plain, fourteen thousand feet about sea level on Scorpion Lake. Its population includes fishermen who ply their trade in rude boats of hide. There are also yak herdsmen and peasants. Above it towers Samding Mon- astery, containing both monks and ‘nuns, presided over by an Abbess, who according to Mr Sandborg was child of four years old in 1001 whose mother lived with her at the Monastery, General Macdonald reports as follows: Nan- gaitae, July 21, via Gyantse, July 23. We marched here from Zars on the 19th. The march was without incident and we found the Tibetan delegates, consisting of the Yutok Shape, the Ta Lams and the Grand Secretary, with a flag of truce waiting to see Colonel Younghusband, who received them. At 3 p.m. that afternoon Nangartse Jong was peacefully occupied by two Com parios of Pathans and found to contain over 3,000 maunds of supplies, chiefly barley meal and a large number of Tibetan traps and kits. The jong is situated at the bottom of a spur about a mile from the shore of & narrow arm of Lake Palti, and is of no great strength. We halted here on the 20th to rest and graze the animals. Colonel Younghusband bed a further interview with the delegates. I am marching to-day to Yaraig and am sending back two troops of mules under escort of a Company of the 23rd Pioncora. I am leaving a post, hore of one Company of the 40th Pathans and twenty Mounted Infantry for dak purposes.

The elevation of Yaindok. Cho along which we are march- ing for 25 miles, is found to be 15,000 feet.
Pete Jong, July 21.-The Mounted Infantry yesterday found the Jong abandoned and occupied it. We have now penetrated within sixty-five miles of Lhassa. The last two days we followed the banks of the great Yamdok Lake, which glitters a tur- quoise blue in the sunlight. The villages are leserted; the men and women have fled to the bills with their valuables, and flocks, and the fishing boats have been gunk or taken to the other side of the Lake. Ti. botan troops inclu, ing Kham boys, are reported to be collected at Chhusul, thirty milos distant on the further bank of the Brahmaputra where there is a ruined fort, The camp here is pitched beside the Jong, which atande out like Chillon, a picturesqué old fortress, crumbling and dil-pids' ed, with courtyards neglected and overgrown with nettles. Our next march takes us to Kamalong, at the foot of the Khamba Pass, whence we look down the Brahmaputra valley. The Shapes left Nangartse at midnight on the 20th. Troops have been loft to garrison Ralung, Nangartse and Pato. A reconnaisance reports that the wall six miles hence stretching from the
ken mile uphill, has been evacuated.

The fact of the matter was ̈ ̈ -between one-twenty-fifth and one- thirtieth-had now reached maturity, and, as was done everywhere whero tree plant ing was systematically carried out, the matured trees were being cut down and sold and their places filled by young trees. Wherever one old tree was cut, foor
young ones wore being planted. The present was the first cutting in Hongkong, and,' added Mr Dunn, 'I don't suppose that the first cutting takes place anywhere without attracting some criticism.'
There were two systems of felling the trees, one known as the block system, and
the other by selection. In the first in-
stance the trees were felled in blocks of,
say, half-a square milo, cutting down all but the smallest trees and subsequently replanting the whole ares. Felling by selection meant that only the biggest, and oldest trees, were cut down, and the rest left standing. This method was much more expensive than the block system, and another objection to it was that in falling big trees a number of smaller ones were always injured and disfigured.
