MARK TWAIN AB A
PRINTER'S BOY.
A new story about Mark Twain'han just Bome out in the Now York Sun. It seemŁA
that in the year 1851 Major Dsulton set type on the Hannibal (Mo.) Union for Orion Clemons, an elder brother of Mark Twain. Mark was a printer boy in the office of The Union then. A few weeks ago Major Daulton told some reminiscences of Twain. Said the major:
What I remember most particularly. about Sam is that he could get more ink and grease on him for the amount of work he did than any man in the shop. He had holy horror of Sunday school and church, and generally went fishing or swimming on the day of rest,
No, I can't recall one single humorous story that he ever told in his printer days. Truth is I don't think he 'was overly bright.
I read his Huckleberry Finn,' but don't think it's much of a book. Do you? Sam said he edited the paper, but I never struck any of his copy while I work.
ed on it. It was a tremendous surprise to me to see him forging to the front in after- Guess the gift years as a man of letters, came to him when he was out in the West.
It certainly hand't shown any indica fiods of lighting on him when he was at Hannibal. His ambition then was in on- other direction altogether. He wanted to be a pilot. The real hale of glory in those days, in the eyes of youth, surrounded steamboat men. They wore the real kinga of the earth.
* Sam wanted to be a pilot. I decided to be a captain. Jim Wolf, the roller boy, thought he'd be a mate. Sam was the only one of us that realized his ambition, and I've heard he got so he'know every reef and sandbar between St. Louis and Now Orlouny, and could locate 'em blindfolded."

A good number of platos are bruised and will have to be removed, but it is hoped that she will be able to leave the dock within a month's time. Owing to the construction of the Leviathan the dam. age is less than would have been the case with an older type of vessel. Like most modern warships she is bilge kooled, and consequently, instead of the plates being badly dented when she bumped on the rocks, they were only bruised.
