PROVINCIAL APPENDIX
Col. Francis, the more distinguished of the two brothers, holda his commission in the Indian staff corps, Maj. George, the younger, belongs to the Queen's Own Corpe of Guides-a hard-fighting corps which bears, with the Sikhs and the Ghurkas, the brunt of all the Indian frontier campaigns.
The brothers belong to an old Anglo- Indian family which has played a prominent art in the military bistory of the country. their father, Maj. Gen. Younghusband, 0.8.I., is a sturdy old warrior, who fought through the Indian Mutiny and many other campaigns. One of their uncles was killed in the Mutiny. Another, Robert Shaw, became famous as the first English explorer of Turkestan, where Francis Younghus. band, following in his footstops many years later, met old natives who had accompanied him in his expeditions.
The old major-general retired from India, wanted his eldest son to serve in a crack British regiment, so he got him a commis- sion in the lat. Dragoon Guards. Francis Younghusband stayed in that corps several years and rose to the rank of captain, but finally he found the call of the East too strong to resist. His younger brother, already in the Guides, wrote home letters about fighting and exploring which made bla mouth water. He exchanged into the Indian Staff Corps, to live the life of his ancestors.
So soon as he got to India he began to devour every book on Asiatic exploration
that he could find in the library of the staff corps. His taste for the subject was soon recognized by his superior officers, and he was set to work in the library to map out routes in the Pamirs and on the north-west frontier by which British armies could advance. It was congenial work, but not lively enough for the man who wanted to go out and explore undiscovered country for himself, instead of reading about other people's explorations.
Une evening he met another young Anglo-Indian named Rose at dinner. Their tastes were similar, and they talked about the travels they would like to undertake until far into the dawn. A few days later Rose burst into Younghusband's bungalow and said:
'I'm going on an exploring trip. Will you come with me?”
Younghusband did not wait to ask where ho was going but shouted 'Yes' at once. Rose explained that he meant to travel through Manchuria and climb the untrodden *Long White Mountain.' Younghusband mored heaven and earth to get leave of absence from his military duties, and in 1886 they started.
They went right through Manchuria, which at that time was a little-known country, climbed to the summit of the 'Long White Mountain, and had many exciting adventures, They narrowly escaped drowning in the swollen Sungari River, risked death many times at the hands of the bandit Chunchuses and un- friendly Manchu officials, and nearly starv- ed on the snow-clad slopes of the Long White Mountain' Another white man and a Chinese guide accompanied thein, and on one occasion the four had to subsist for three days on two cartridges.
*But our worst experience," said Young- husband once, *was when we got through at last to Pekin, The first white man's house we reached was the Scottish Medical Mission near that city. We were deplor- able objects ragged, bootless, dirty, with long, straggling beards, for we had not been able to shave for months. However, the hospitable Scotsmen came out and gave us a hearty welcome, and took us right inside into the middle of a ladies' tea party. We could have sunk through the floor. We wished ourselves back among the Man- churian brigands.'
Younghusband rested at Pekin after his arduous trip, and was lionized by the for- eign colony there. Just as he was about to return to India, Colonel Bell, an officer whom he knew, arrived at Pekin to travel overland from that place through Chinese Turkestan and the Desort of Gobi to the Indian frontier. It was too good a chance
to miss. Younghusband cabled direct to the Viceroy of India and got an extension of leave to enable him to go with Colonel Bell.
We will go by different routes,' said the colonel, who is famous in India for cover. ing more ground in a shorter time then any other explorer, and thus do double amount of exploring. I will meet you at Hami at noon on such a day'-naming a. Chinese town nearly 2,000 miles from Pekin-and we will go on together to In- dia.
•
But you cannot tell what progress you will make on a trip like this,' said Young- husband. We had better wait for one another several days at Hami, if necessary." I shall be there when I say,' replied the colonel, and perhaps I will wait for you an hour or two.'
The colonel kept his schedule time as well as an express locomotive. Punctually at noon on the appointed day he sat down: in the market place of Hami and waited for Younghusband. He waited all day, but Younghusband bad chosen the worse route and did not arrive on time. Next morning the colonel went on to India. crossed the frontier on the day he had fixed, and re ported himself at Simla at the very hour he had told the Viceroy to expect him several months before.
Younghusband got safely through to India after a journey of great hardship, during which he visited many tribes and settle ments never before reached by white men. His ability as art explorer was recognized by the Indian Government, and he was taken off his military duties and assigned to that work. He spent the next four or five years exploring the wildest regions of the Famirs, Chitral, Hunza and other parts of Central Asia. But he was not only an explorer: he was also a diplomatist sent by the Indian Government to warn the tribal chieftains. on the roof of the world" not to succumb to Russian intrigued.
Naturally, he often came into collision with the Russian agentssent from Turkestan to work among the same tribes. In 1890, while he was camping out on the Pamire with a single servant, a Russian surveying party, commanded by Col.. Yonoff, pitclied its camp close by him. The party cons Pa severa and 230 Coi

husband toasted the Czar. Yonoff proposed the health of Queen Victoria, and they made the mountaina echo with the strains of one another's' national anthems. Day after day they went hunting together, and dined with one another alternately. Then one morning Youoff came over to Young husband's tent with a doleful expression on his face and a telogram in his hand.
'Alas! my dear friend," he said, "I have heen ordered by my Government to arrest you and deport you from this territory, which they claim belonge to Russia. It desolates me to lose the pleasure of your society, but I must do my duty as a soldier.
"All right, colonel,' replied Younghus- band. I'm sorry. Of course, I shall pro test to my Government, for we do not ad- nit Russia's claim to the territory. But I suppose there's no immediate hurry. You can wait long enough to come to dinner with me to-night, as we had arranged."
The jailer and his prisoner dined to. gether, and had the jolliest of all their festivities. Xanoff offered to let Younghus. band leave the territory without being ar. rested if he would promise not to return by any one of several mountain passes which he named. An agreement to this affect was drawn up, and Yonoff inserted the name of every known pass.
Younghusband marched over into Chin ese Turkestan and then calmly returnék and skirted round the mountain ranges until he discovered a new pass by which he could get back to the Pamirs without breaking bis word. He finished his explor. ing work there, carefully keeping out of the way of his Russian friends. Then he return- ed to India, and lodged a protest against his expulsion, which seriously strained the ru lations between the Russian and British Ultimately, Governments for some time. the Foreign Minister at St. Petersburg mado an apology to the British Ambassa- dor, and Russia formally relinquished all claim to the disputed territory.
Although Younghusband has constantly come into professional conflict with the Russians, he has a great liking for them.

After the South African adventures, Younghusband returned to Indis and was steadily promoted from one important political position to another, until he was given command of the Tibetan expedition.
Younghusband's rise in the British ser- vice has been unusually rapid. Many honors have been bestowed upon him, and in 1691 he was awarded the decoration most coveted by Anglo-Indians-the Kaisor- i-Hind gold medal for public service in India. Physically he is a man, of iron frame, tall, finely built, and so deeply tanned by the sun that he might easily pass for a native, as he has done many times on his various expeditions among unfriendly tribes.

YHRONIC DIARRHOEA.-For several years during the summer months I have been subject to looseness of the bowels, which quickly ran into a very bad diarrhoea and this trouble was frequently accompanied with severe pain and cramps. I used to call, on doctors for my trouble but it became so regular a summer affliction that in my search for relief, I became acquainted with Chamberlain's Colic, Cho- tera and Diarrhoea Romedy, which proved so effective and so prompt that I came to rely exclusively upon it, and what also happily surprised me was that while it almost instantly relieved the cramps and stopped the diarrhoes, it never caused con- stipation. has been met by a large force of Russians. The main fighting is taking place in the vicinity of Langtsushati, on the road from Fonshuling to Liaoyang, where Kuroki'e forces have advanced since the repulse of General Keller last Sunday.
The details of the fighting are meagre, but it is intimated that the present engage- meut is preliminary to the great battle now pending on the Liank river.
Press reports indicate that the present campaign is likely to prove tedious owing to the great difficulties of transporting troops and supplies in the present condi tions of the roads which are in many places almost impassable.

Inspector MacDonald gave evidence con- cerning the exhibits, which were found at up. No 42 Temple-street, Yaumati, in stairs room. Chinese Constable 225 stated that on the morning of the 17th instant in company with an Indian Sergeant, and another officor, he entered the house next to No. 42 and made his way to the third floor where he crossed over to the balcony of No. 42. He went to the window of one of the balcony rooms and finding it -closed looked in through a crack. He saw the first defendant sitting with a red cloth tied round his head and wearing a wash of the same colour. In his left hand he was holding a pair of slippers. He was sitting on an ordinary bamboo stool with his right hand, in which he held a book, resting on a table, which occupied the contre of the room. No. 1 sat facing where witness was standing and he could hear him reading from the book to the meeting but could not make out distinctly what he was saying. No. 2 was close to the first defendant and hold some joss sticks and candles. He repeated after No. 1 the pass- nges that he read from the book. There were three men in the room kneeling down on the floor with their hair hanging down, but as their backs were turned to witness he could not see what they were doing. In front of them was the bucket containing the red and yellow flags (produced).
The police then raided the room and after the arrests had been effected witness made a search and collected the exhibits produced. There were between thirty and forty men in the room when witnesa firat looked in and they were all taking part in the meeting.
The case was remanded until Friday.

the coolies. Those cases could not be de- tected when the men were being taken on board the vessel. It was also considered highly probable that the iron decks were in à great measure roaponsible for the severity of the outbreak.
The coolies slept on matrings on wet decks, or decks that wore barely dry, and in consequence, a consider cble amount of sweating was promoted, which assisted the progress of the disease. The presence of a fow English-speaking Chinese among the coolies was responsible for a certain amount of trouble with the ship's officers. On one occasion an English- speaking coolie tried to raise a row by declaring that murder had been committed on board. The cooks have thrown two coolies overboard,' he said.
