The inhabitants of the valley were not so fortunate, however. Many men, women and children were carried in the raging torrents towards the river. The accumulation of carabao, horses and debris added to the danger and these people were practically cut off. However ap alarm was sent in to Manila and every available policeman was turned out and rushed to the scene, With life lines and other apparatus they rushed to their mission of rescue. Many lives saved, Helpless natives cling ing their floating

The story tells of a Magdalon's afterlife— after she is married. The scene is placed in a country town and the actors are all coud- try people. The Magdalon married a brutish lout, for whom she had no sympathy but for whom she cloaked her feelings and Contented herself with receiving his drunken blows in silence. She endeavoured to live down her past life, and although sha knew he held the love of an honest straight- forward taan in Zerkol Draicol she steeler herself against him. The man who had betrayed her, Jim Anscomb, returns to the village and is forced by the Magdalen's husband to go to her house. The Magdalen rushes from her husband's room when she sees Anscomb and takes refuge in Drnicot's rooms. Draicot leaves her, goes to her home, and kills her husband, Anscomb discovers the body is found bonding over him--and is accused by the Magdalen of murder. While ho is waiting his trial Drai- cot confesses to the Magdalen that he killed her husband and leaves her to decide who shall be hung, he or Anscomb. She points the way to duty and Draicot confesses. The story is tragic, as is the entire book. It is well writton and interesting, albeit it is somewhat saddening. The dialogue ospecially is entertaining. and there are several good characters in the book.

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. Polica Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 fest 3 inches below mean sea level.
