H. M. Ayres, playing for the Shanghai Recreation Club 2nd XI., against the Parseca, secured the following bowling average: 4 overs, 2 maidens, 4 runs, wickets. average 1.33.

The Shanghai Polo Club's Gymkhana on July 4 was an unqualified success, most of the items being of a comic. nature. One race in particular was responsible for a considerable amount of fun. The conditions were:-Gentlemen to be nominated by ladies; the former to ride to their partners with a sealed envelope, which will contain the name of an animál, reptile or bird'; hand. the envelope unopened to partner, who will then run to a blackboard, which will face away from the gentleman, and draw the animal, etc. described; when finished the lady will turn the blackboard round so that the gentleman can see it and guess the name of the animal, etc. The gentleman will then write the name of the animal, etc., ou the blackboard, mount, and gallop back over a hurdle to winning-post. First home who has written the correct name of animal on the board to win,

Owing to the large field the event was competed for in two sections. It cannot be said that the ladies displayed great artis- tic ability, or perhaps wo should say that the gentlemen were too quick to guess what the animals were intended to be. A giraffe was mistaken for a tork, a goat for a donkey, a dog for a cow, a kangaroo for a pig, a frog for a dog, and a camel for a crocodile. The mot ludicrous mistake was about a swan. The gentleman apparently mistook this for a duck, and handed the board back to the lady with 'you' written upon it. In the first batch Mrs Landale's champion, Mr Campbell, came in first. Mr P. Crighton, Miss A. Brand's nomince, came in first in the second batch.

Baron Su- yematau hinted that General Kuropatkin might be attacked at Liao-yang simul. taneously with the storming of Port Arthur. Ho did not nesort this as a fact, but he saw no reason why it should not be done. The Correspondent then asked whether the Japanese, assuming_that_they could take Port Arthur and defeat General Kuropat- kin at Liao-yang, would continue their march Northward. To this the Baron re- plied. Certainly.'

Mr Mitchell, on behalf of the members of the Dock staff, said that they were very pleased to see the large attendance that had witnessed the launch of the Shanghai. Mr Dixon had told them that the interest of every man in the Docks was devoted to raking first-class work on the Shanghai, and not only did they do the work well, but they finished it quickly. Mr Dixon, in proposing Success to the Shanghai, expressed the pleasure he felt at the successful launching of the fine ship. She was, as they had soon, a very fine ship, and, he ventured to say, a splendidly built Mr D. R. Law, of Masara Butter field and Swire, had given them the order. After remarking on past vessels built by the Dock Company for trading purposes on the different rivers along the coast, Mr Dixon amounced that the Shanghai was destined Mr Dixon called on Mr A. R. A house for a market is in course of erection, which, when completed will be & great advantage. Large numbers of trees have been planted this spring by the sides On the Amoy BUND, at Nos, on 20th July, of the main roads, and it is pleasant to notice that most of these have taken root and bid fair to increase the amount of shade, to the comfort of all pedestrians.

I hear rumours also that it is very likely that the Lottery business may fall through after all, owing to difficulties in certain directions. So far the efforts to control the sale of moat on Kulangau have not proved very successful. It is not easy to get top-ides of a Chinaman: he is an adept at evasion and deceit, being as wily as a Greek and slimmer' than a Boer.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of othervations taken by means of an au- Cebu tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9,

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 foot 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 8 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
