wouldn't want them to start in with me. 'I believe that things should stay as they are. If a man wins a lightweight championship or the featherweight championship, or the bantam championship, let him defend the sams, irrespective of his weight. From Dolon Northe travellers were compelled by the heavy snow to make a dash for Hailar, instead of carrying out their original intention to Continue northwards as far as Pair Nor and then to return via Urga and Kalgan to Pokin. SIR HENRY IRVING.

An Interesting Speech.

Recently we published a cable announcing the projected retirement of Sir Henry Irving. The following speech was made by Sir Henry at the Manchester Arts Club, and should prove interesting reading. In replying to the toast of his health he said:

He wrote back in quite o different spirit, How like an actor-mana- ger! Gentlemen, the strolling player who

|U. 8. 8. ‘Kentucky's' Becórd Voyage.

The United States battleship Kentucky anchored off Tompkinsville recently having made the world's record run for a warship from Hongkong and Madeira to New York.
